Empathy for others.
It is not among the traits of the Muslims for one to forget his brothers,
or to deliberately turn away from them,
becoming arrogant and neglecting them,
finding safety while remaining indifferent to their plight,
or growing wealthy while disregarding their suffering.
Therefore, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, teaches us
the meaning of faith-based brotherhood,
and empathy for others in their poverty, weakness, and alienation.
Just as he used to inquire about the oppressed in Makkah,
and pray for them during the Qunut.
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him,
that when the Prophet, peace be upon him, would say,
"Allah hears those who praise Him,"
in the final rak'ah of the Isha prayer,
this serves as evidence for the unity of the Ummah,
and the necessity of inquiring about and concerning oneself with their affairs,
and thinking of ways to save them.
He would make the worshippers among the Ansar feel
that they had distant brothers
who were being tortured for the sake of Allah,
so we must not forget them in our supplications.
Supplicating for them
means acknowledging them, feeling pain for their condition,
and asking Allah for their deliverance.
In this lies the warding off of selfishness and self-absorption,
which are among the ailments of later generations,
where the brotherhood of faith disintegrates,
and every individual becomes preoccupied with himself,
ignoring a brotherhood reinforced by the Qur'an
and explained by the authentic Sunnah.
Allah the Exalted says:
﴾And you became brothers by His favor﴿
And the Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
"The believer to the believer is like a structure,
each part strengthening the other,"
and he interlaced his fingers.
Your brother, your brother; for he who has no brother
is like one walking into battle without a weapon.
May Allah curse the one who sells a friend for another,
for not every sale one makes brings profit.
And Allah is the Grantor of success.
