00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.399
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

00:00:03.399 --> 00:00:06.889
Treasures of the Prophetic Biography.

00:00:06.889 --> 00:00:12.339
The ruling on seeking assistance from non-Muslims.

00:00:12.339 --> 00:00:18.039
Scholars have mentioned two opinions regarding this matter.

00:00:18.039 --> 00:00:19.440
First:

00:00:19.440 --> 00:00:22.839
It is permissible to seek assistance from polytheists.

00:00:22.839 --> 00:00:24.039
Second:

00:00:24.039 --> 00:00:25.440
It is not permissible.

00:00:25.440 --> 00:00:27.039
And this second opinion is the correct one,

00:00:27.039 --> 00:00:30.039
based on the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)

00:00:30.039 --> 00:00:32.640
when he went out for one of his military expeditions,

00:00:33.039 --> 00:00:35.439
and a man came to him and said:

00:00:35.439 --> 00:00:37.240
"I wish to fight alongside you."

00:00:37.240 --> 00:00:38.240
He asked:

00:00:38.240 --> 00:00:40.840
"Do you believe in Allah and His Messenger?"

00:00:40.840 --> 00:00:42.840
The man replied, "No."

00:00:42.840 --> 00:00:45.840
So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

00:00:45.840 --> 00:00:46.840
"Then turn back,

00:00:46.840 --> 00:00:49.439
for I will never seek the help of a polytheist."

00:00:49.439 --> 00:00:52.039
We have already expounded upon this issue

00:00:52.039 --> 00:00:54.840
during our discussion on the Battle of Uhud,

00:00:54.840 --> 00:00:58.240
where we noted that it is permissible only in cases of genuine need.

00:00:58.240 --> 00:01:00.640
Otherwise, when there is no need,

00:01:00.640 --> 00:01:04.439
it is not permissible for a Muslim to seek assistance from polytheists.

00:01:04.439 --> 00:01:06.239
This is precisely what is indicated by

00:01:06.239 --> 00:01:09.239
the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

00:01:10.269 --> 00:01:15.439
Treasures of the Prophetic Biography.

00:01:15.439 --> 00:01:22.719
The departure of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to Hunayn.

00:01:22.719 --> 00:01:26.519
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) set out in Shawwal

00:01:26.519 --> 00:01:29.319
of the eighth year after the Hijrah

00:01:29.319 --> 00:01:33.319
from Makkah, leading twelve thousand Muslims.

00:01:33.519 --> 00:01:37.519
He appointed 'Attab ibn Asid over Makkah.

00:01:37.519 --> 00:01:41.519
Those who went out with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) were:

00:01:41.519 --> 00:01:44.319
ten thousand of his Companions

00:01:44.319 --> 00:01:47.459
and two thousand from the people of Makkah.

00:01:47.459 --> 00:01:52.540
Treasures of the Prophetic Biography.

00:01:52.540 --> 00:01:57.310
An educational pause.

00:01:57.310 --> 00:01:59.909
On their way to Hunayn,

00:01:59.909 --> 00:02:04.510
a major incident occurred that must be highlighted,

00:02:04.510 --> 00:02:05.909
namely:

00:02:05.909 --> 00:02:10.110
among those accompanying the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)

00:02:10.110 --> 00:02:13.509
were individuals who had only recently left Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance).

00:02:13.509 --> 00:02:16.909
Along the way, they passed by a huge lote tree

00:02:16.909 --> 00:02:19.509
known as *Dhat Anwat*.

00:02:19.509 --> 00:02:25.310
The Arabs used to hang their weapons upon it to seek blessings so they might achieve victory.

00:02:25.310 --> 00:02:27.909
When the army reached the lote tree,

00:02:27.909 --> 00:02:29.909
they said: "O Messenger of Allah,

00:02:29.909 --> 00:02:34.509
designate for us a *Dhat Anwat* just as they have a *Dhat Anwat*!"

00:02:34.509 --> 00:02:37.909
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) exclaimed:

00:02:37.909 --> 00:02:39.509
"*Allahu Akbar!* (Allah is the Greatest!)

00:02:39.509 --> 00:02:42.710
By Him in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, you have said

00:02:42.710 --> 00:02:45.909
just as the people of Moses said to Moses: ◁ Make for us a god just as they have gods. ▷

00:02:45.909 --> 00:02:49.509
“And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came unto a people who were given up to idols which they had. They said: O Moses! Make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: Lo! ye are a folk who know not.” (7:138)

00:02:49.509 --> 00:02:52.909
“And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came unto a people who were given up to idols which they had. They said: O Moses! Make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: Lo! ye are a folk who know not.” (7:138)

00:02:52.909 --> 00:02:54.509
Indeed, these are the ways of the past!

00:02:54.509 --> 00:02:58.580
You shall surely follow the ways of those before you."

00:02:58.580 --> 00:03:00.379
This great hadith

00:03:00.379 --> 00:03:03.180
illustrates a paramount issue for us,

00:03:03.180 --> 00:03:04.780
which is

00:03:04.780 --> 00:03:07.580
that the ranks must be purified

00:03:07.580 --> 00:03:10.780
of anything that might corrupt them in the future.

00:03:10.780 --> 00:03:14.379
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not say:

00:03:14.379 --> 00:03:17.379
"We are going into battle right now,

00:03:17.379 --> 00:03:18.580
so it is fine—

00:03:18.580 --> 00:03:21.580
we will give you a *Dhat Anwat* later,"

00:03:21.580 --> 00:03:23.580
nor did he remain silently tolerant

00:03:23.580 --> 00:03:27.379
and defer his response to them until the battle ended—

00:03:27.379 --> 00:03:28.580
never!

00:03:28.580 --> 00:03:30.979
Rather, he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) paused,

00:03:30.979 --> 00:03:33.379
standing firm as a sincere, guiding leader.

00:03:33.379 --> 00:03:34.979
He halted the army

00:03:34.979 --> 00:03:38.180
and addressed them with what we mentioned earlier.

00:03:38.180 --> 00:03:40.379
Therefore, it is unacceptable to say:

00:03:40.379 --> 00:03:43.379
"What matters is that he is outwardly a Muslim,

00:03:43.379 --> 00:03:46.580
regardless of his creed or ideology."

00:03:46.580 --> 00:03:48.979
Such a notion is entirely false;

00:03:48.979 --> 00:03:51.180
rather, the ranks must be purged

00:03:51.180 --> 00:03:52.780
and purified,

00:03:52.780 --> 00:03:54.180
instilling firm faith

00:03:54.180 --> 00:03:57.580
and sound creed within the hearts of the people,

00:03:57.580 --> 00:04:00.580
after which fighting takes place,

00:04:00.580 --> 00:04:05.580
and only then does victory arrive from Allah, Blessed and Exalted.

00:04:16.060 --> 00:04:20.060
When some people saw the vast numbers of the Muslims, they remarked:

00:04:20.060 --> 00:04:23.089
"We shall not be defeated today for lack of numbers!"

00:04:23.089 --> 00:04:25.089
Meanwhile, Malik ibn 'Awf

00:04:25.089 --> 00:04:27.089
had reached Hunayn ahead of the Muslims.

00:04:27.089 --> 00:04:30.089
He moved his army into the valley under the cover of night,

00:04:30.089 --> 00:04:32.089
positioning his ambushers—

00:04:32.089 --> 00:04:37.089
a contingent of the army hidden along the paths and passes—

00:04:37.089 --> 00:04:39.089
and instructed them

00:04:39.089 --> 00:04:44.089
to rain arrows upon the Muslims the moment they emerged before them,

00:04:44.089 --> 00:04:47.089
and then charge as one man.

00:04:47.089 --> 00:04:49.180
At the break of dawn,

00:04:49.180 --> 00:04:53.180
the Muslims entered the valley of Hunayn

00:04:53.180 --> 00:04:55.180
and began descending into it,

00:04:55.180 --> 00:04:58.180
completely unaware of the hidden ambushers.

00:04:58.180 --> 00:05:00.180
As they were descending,

00:05:00.180 --> 00:05:05.180
suddenly arrows began showering upon them from every direction!

00:05:05.180 --> 00:05:07.180
Then the enemy cavalry charged,

00:05:07.180 --> 00:05:11.180
launching a unified assault against the Muslims.

00:05:11.180 --> 00:05:15.180
Jabir ibn 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported:

00:05:15.180 --> 00:05:18.180
"When we faced the valley of Hunayn,

00:05:18.180 --> 00:05:23.180
we descended into a deep, steep valley of Tihamah;

00:05:23.180 --> 00:05:26.180
we were simply descending rapidly into it.

00:05:26.180 --> 00:05:28.180
In the morning,

00:05:28.180 --> 00:05:33.180
the enemy had preceded us and lain in wait in its ravines and narrow passes."

00:05:33.180 --> 00:05:38.180
Following that, a wave of panic swept through the Muslims,

00:05:38.180 --> 00:05:40.180
scattering their ranks.

00:05:40.180 --> 00:05:43.180
Malik’s men capitalized on this confusion,

00:05:43.180 --> 00:05:45.180
as their battalions attacked

00:05:45.180 --> 00:05:48.180
and the cavalry charged those at the front.

00:05:48.180 --> 00:05:51.180
Consequently, the Muslims turned back in defeat,

00:05:51.180 --> 00:05:54.180
no one paying heed to anyone else,

00:05:54.180 --> 00:05:57.180
with camels crashing into one another,

00:05:57.180 --> 00:06:00.180
utterly bewildered as to what to do.

00:06:00.180 --> 00:06:03.180
Yet, there remained steadfast alongside the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)

00:06:03.180 --> 00:06:06.180
a group from the Muhajirun and the Ansar.

00:06:06.180 --> 00:06:09.279
'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

00:06:09.279 --> 00:06:14.279
"I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on the day of Hunayn.

00:06:14.279 --> 00:06:16.279
The people turned and fled from him,

00:06:16.279 --> 00:06:21.279
but eighty men from the Muhajirun and the Ansar stood firm with him."

00:06:21.279 --> 00:06:23.379
And Ibn 'Umar said:

00:06:23.379 --> 00:06:25.379
"I saw us on the day of Hunayn,

00:06:25.379 --> 00:06:28.379
when the people had turned away,

00:06:28.379 --> 00:06:33.379
and there were not even one hundred men remaining with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)."

00:06:48.730 --> 00:06:50.730
Ibn Sa'd recorded

00:06:50.730 --> 00:06:53.730
on the authority of Shaybah ibn 'Uthman al-Hajabi, who said:

00:06:53.730 --> 00:06:55.730
"In the year of the Conquest,

00:06:55.730 --> 00:07:00.730
when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered Makkah by force,

00:07:00.730 --> 00:07:05.730
I said to myself: 'I will march with Quraysh against Hawazin at Hunayn,

00:07:05.730 --> 00:07:07.730
so that if the forces mix in battle,

00:07:07.730 --> 00:07:09.730
I might catch Muhammad off guard

00:07:09.730 --> 00:07:11.730
and avenge myself upon him,

00:07:11.730 --> 00:07:15.730
thus being the one who took revenge on behalf of all Quraysh.'

00:07:15.730 --> 00:07:17.730
And I used to say:

00:07:17.730 --> 00:07:20.730
'Even if not a single person among the Arabs or non-Arabs remained

00:07:20.730 --> 00:07:22.730
except that they followed Muhammad,

00:07:22.730 --> 00:07:24.730
I would never follow him.'

00:07:24.730 --> 00:07:26.790
So I stayed on the watch when I went out,

00:07:26.790 --> 00:07:30.790
and this resolve only grew stronger in my heart.

00:07:30.790 --> 00:07:32.790
When the armies clashed and mingled,

00:07:32.790 --> 00:07:37.790
the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) dismounted from his mule,

00:07:37.790 --> 00:07:39.790
so I unsheathed my sword

00:07:39.790 --> 00:07:42.790
and drew near him, intending what I intended.

00:07:42.790 --> 00:07:44.790
I raised my sword

00:07:44.790 --> 00:07:46.790
until I was about to strike him with it—

00:07:46.790 --> 00:07:49.790
meaning I was about to kill him—

00:07:49.790 --> 00:07:52.790
when a flare of fire like lightning rose before me,

00:07:52.790 --> 00:07:54.790
almost scorching me.

00:07:54.790 --> 00:07:57.790
I placed my hand over my eyes out of fear for them.

00:07:57.790 --> 00:08:01.790
Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned to me,

00:08:01.790 --> 00:08:03.790
called out to me, and said:

00:08:03.790 --> 00:08:05.790
'O Shaybah!

00:08:05.790 --> 00:08:07.790
Come near me.'

00:08:07.790 --> 00:08:09.790
So I drew near him,

00:08:09.790 --> 00:08:11.790
and he wiped over my chest and prayed:

00:08:11.790 --> 00:08:14.790
'O Allah, protect him from Satan.'

00:08:14.790 --> 00:08:16.790
Shaybah said:

00:08:16.790 --> 00:08:17.790
"By Allah,

00:08:17.790 --> 00:08:23.790
at that very moment, he became dearer to me than my hearing, my sight, and my own soul,

00:08:23.790 --> 00:08:26.790
and Allah removed all that was in my heart.

00:08:26.790 --> 00:08:28.790
Then he said to me:

00:08:28.790 --> 00:08:30.790
'Draw near and fight!'

00:08:30.790 --> 00:08:33.789
So I stepped in front of him, striking with my sword;

00:08:33.789 --> 00:08:38.789
Allah knows that I wished to shield him from everything with my own life.

00:08:38.789 --> 00:08:42.789
Had I met my own father at that hour, were he alive,

00:08:42.789 --> 00:08:44.789
I would have brought the sword down upon him!

00:08:44.789 --> 00:08:47.919
I remained by his side wherever he moved,

00:08:47.919 --> 00:08:52.919
until the Muslims rallied and counterattacked as one man.

00:08:52.919 --> 00:08:56.919
Then the mule of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was brought close,

00:08:56.919 --> 00:08:58.919
he mounted it,

00:08:58.919 --> 00:09:04.019
and advanced in pursuit of them until they scattered in every direction.

00:09:04.019 --> 00:09:08.019
He returned to his camp and entered his tent,

00:09:08.019 --> 00:09:09.019
and I entered upon him—

00:09:09.019 --> 00:09:12.019
no one else entering upon him besides me—

00:09:12.019 --> 00:09:16.019
driven by the desire to see his face and out of joy in his presence.

00:09:16.019 --> 00:09:17.019
He said:

00:09:17.019 --> 00:09:18.019
'O Shaybah,

00:09:18.019 --> 00:09:20.019
what Allah intended for you

00:09:20.019 --> 00:09:23.019
was far better than what you intended for yourself.'

00:09:23.019 --> 00:09:27.019
Then he related to me everything I had harbored in my heart,

00:09:27.019 --> 00:09:30.019
which I had never mentioned to anyone."

00:09:30.019 --> 00:09:31.210
Shaybah said:

00:09:31.210 --> 00:09:32.210
"I said:

00:09:32.210 --> 00:09:36.210
'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,

00:09:36.210 --> 00:09:38.210
and that you are the Messenger of Allah.'

00:09:38.210 --> 00:09:39.210
Then I said:

00:09:39.210 --> 00:09:41.210
'Ask forgiveness for me!'

00:09:41.210 --> 00:09:42.210
He replied:

00:09:42.210 --> 00:09:44.210
'May Allah forgive you.'"

00:09:44.210 --> 00:09:49.460
I find no comment on this incident except to say:

00:09:49.460 --> 00:09:55.460
Read it again a second, third, fourth, and fifth time!

00:09:55.460 --> 00:09:58.460
Treasures of the Prophetic Biography.

00:09:58.460 --> 00:10:06.639
Why did vanity touch the hearts of some Muslims?

00:10:06.639 --> 00:10:09.779
First:

00:10:09.779 --> 00:10:12.779
The majority of Muslims felt

00:10:12.779 --> 00:10:15.779
that Jahiliyyah was breathing its last,

00:10:15.779 --> 00:10:18.779
so vanity entered the hearts of some of them.

00:10:18.779 --> 00:10:20.940
Second:

00:10:20.940 --> 00:10:23.940
Many of them relied upon the army's large numbers,

00:10:23.940 --> 00:10:27.940
Without relying on the fact that victory comes solely from Allah.

00:10:27.940 --> 00:10:29.039
Third:

00:10:29.039 --> 00:10:32.039
They had previously seen themselves victorious while they were few,

00:10:32.039 --> 00:10:35.039
So how could they be defeated when they possessed such vast numbers?

00:10:35.039 --> 00:10:38.139
Treasures of the Seerah.

00:10:38.139 --> 00:10:43.299
The bravest of creation:

00:10:43.299 --> 00:10:50.639
After the polytheists, led by Malik Ibn 'Awf, launched a surprise attack on the Muslims,

00:10:50.639 --> 00:10:53.639
And arrows rained down upon them from every direction,

00:10:53.639 --> 00:10:56.639
The camels began trampling over one another,

00:10:56.639 --> 00:10:58.639
The horses bolted in terror,

00:10:58.639 --> 00:11:00.639
Some of the Muslims were put to flight,

00:11:00.639 --> 00:11:03.639
Not knowing where to turn,

00:11:03.639 --> 00:11:07.639
Yet the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stood his ground and did not flee,

00:11:07.639 --> 00:11:08.639
Along with those who remained by his side,

00:11:08.639 --> 00:11:10.639
For he would never flee.

00:11:10.639 --> 00:11:14.639
Indeed, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, displayed astonishing courage;

00:11:14.639 --> 00:11:16.639
While the Muslims were retreating,

00:11:16.639 --> 00:11:18.639
And the polytheists were pressing their assault,

00:11:18.639 --> 00:11:22.639
He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was charging directly toward the polytheists,

00:11:22.639 --> 00:11:24.639
Proclaiming:

00:11:24.639 --> 00:11:26.639
"I am the Prophet, no lie!

00:11:26.639 --> 00:11:29.639
I am the son of 'Abd al-Muttalib!"

00:11:29.639 --> 00:11:31.639
Abu Sufyan Ibn al-Harith,

00:11:31.639 --> 00:11:34.639
The cousin of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:11:34.639 --> 00:11:37.639
Was holding the reins of his mule,

00:11:37.639 --> 00:11:39.639
While al-'Abbas held its stirrup,

00:11:39.639 --> 00:11:43.639
Both trying to restrain the mule of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:11:43.639 --> 00:11:45.639
From charging further ahead,

00:11:45.639 --> 00:11:48.639
While the Prophet repeated:

00:11:48.639 --> 00:11:50.639
"I am the Prophet, no lie!

00:11:50.639 --> 00:11:52.639
I am the son of 'Abd al-Muttalib!"

00:11:52.639 --> 00:11:56.860
Such matchless bravery could belong to no one

00:11:56.860 --> 00:12:00.860
Except the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:12:00.860 --> 00:12:04.860
Al-Bara' Ibn 'Azib, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

00:12:04.860 --> 00:12:07.860
"By Allah, when the fighting grew fierce and intense,

00:12:07.860 --> 00:12:09.860
We used to shield ourselves behind him,

00:12:09.860 --> 00:12:13.309
And the truly brave among us was the one who could stand alongside him."

00:12:13.309 --> 00:12:18.649
Treasures of the Seerah.

00:12:18.649 --> 00:12:20.649
The victory of the truth:

00:12:20.649 --> 00:12:27.370
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to al-'Abbas:

00:12:27.370 --> 00:12:30.370
"Call out to the Emigrants and the Ansar!

00:12:30.370 --> 00:12:32.370
Call out to the Companions of the Tree!"

00:12:32.370 --> 00:12:36.370
Meaning those who had pledged allegiance to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:12:36.370 --> 00:12:38.370
In the Pledge of al-Hudaybiyyah beneath the tree,

00:12:38.370 --> 00:12:41.429
Which was an acacia tree.

00:12:41.429 --> 00:12:43.429
So al-'Abbas stood and called out at the top of his voice:

00:12:43.429 --> 00:12:45.429
"O Companions of the Tree!

00:12:45.429 --> 00:12:47.429
O Ansar!

00:12:47.429 --> 00:12:49.429
O men of Khazraj!"

00:12:49.429 --> 00:12:52.590
He specifically called out to al-Khazraj,

00:12:52.590 --> 00:12:55.590
For they were renowned for steadfast endurance in battle.

00:12:55.590 --> 00:12:59.720
Then the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, took handfuls of dust

00:12:59.720 --> 00:13:03.720
And hurled them into the faces of the disbelievers, then said:

00:13:03.720 --> 00:13:06.720
"By the Lord of Muhammad, they are defeated!"

00:13:06.720 --> 00:13:08.750
No sooner had he thrown the dust at them

00:13:08.750 --> 00:13:12.750
Than their edge was blunted and their retreat began.

00:13:12.750 --> 00:13:14.750
Al-'Abbas said:

00:13:15.750 --> 00:13:19.750
"By Allah, it was as if their return, upon hearing my voice,

00:13:19.750 --> 00:13:22.750
Was like cows rushing back to protect their calves,

00:13:22.750 --> 00:13:26.820
Crying out: 'Here we are at your service! Here we are at your service!'"

00:13:26.820 --> 00:13:30.820
A man among them would try to turn his camel around to go back,

00:13:30.820 --> 00:13:33.820
But if the camel refused to obey,

00:13:33.820 --> 00:13:35.820
He would dismount from it,

00:13:35.820 --> 00:13:40.820
Don his armor, and rush on foot back to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:13:40.820 --> 00:13:44.850
Those who had remained firmly beside the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:13:44.850 --> 00:13:48.850
Standing close to him without budging,

00:13:48.850 --> 00:13:49.850
Were ten:

00:13:49.850 --> 00:13:54.850
Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Ali, al-'Abbas,

00:13:54.850 --> 00:13:56.850
Al-Fadl Ibn al-'Abbas,

00:13:56.850 --> 00:13:58.850
Rabi'ah Ibn al-Harith,

00:13:58.850 --> 00:14:00.850
Abu Sufyan Ibn al-Harith,

00:14:00.850 --> 00:14:02.850
Usamah Ibn Zayd,

00:14:02.850 --> 00:14:04.850
Ibn Mas'ud,

00:14:04.850 --> 00:14:06.850
And Ayman Ibn Umm Ayman,

00:14:06.850 --> 00:14:09.850
The maternal brother of Usamah;

00:14:09.850 --> 00:14:13.850
He was the only one among these ten who was martyred.

00:14:13.850 --> 00:14:15.879
Al-'Abbas recited:

00:14:15.879 --> 00:14:19.879
"Nine of us supported the Messenger of Allah in battle,

00:14:19.879 --> 00:14:23.879
While those who fled turned their backs and scattered;

00:14:23.879 --> 00:14:26.879
And our tenth faced death itself with his own soul,

00:14:26.879 --> 00:14:30.879
Feeling no pain for what befell him for the sake of Allah."

00:14:30.879 --> 00:14:36.039
Others mentioned among those who stood firm with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, include:

00:14:36.039 --> 00:14:38.039
Qutham Ibn al-'Abbas,

00:14:38.039 --> 00:14:41.039
Ja'far Ibn Abi Sufyan Ibn al-Harith,

00:14:41.039 --> 00:14:43.039
As well as 'Utbah and Mu'attib,

00:14:43.039 --> 00:14:45.039
The sons of Abu Lahab.

00:14:45.039 --> 00:14:51.200
When the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who had fled rallied back to him,

00:14:51.200 --> 00:14:55.200
The two sides engaged in fierce, relentless combat,

00:14:55.200 --> 00:14:59.200
And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, looked upon the battlefield

00:14:59.200 --> 00:15:04.200
And said: "Now the furnace of war grows hot!"

00:15:04.200 --> 00:15:07.740
Treasures of the Seerah.

00:15:07.740 --> 00:15:14.340
"Whoever slays an enemy is entitled to his spoils":

00:15:14.340 --> 00:15:18.379
Abu Qatadah said:

00:15:18.379 --> 00:15:23.480
"We set out with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in the year of Hunayn.

00:15:23.480 --> 00:15:27.480
When we met the enemy, the Muslims initially suffered a setback.

00:15:27.480 --> 00:15:32.480
I saw a man from the polytheists overpowering one of the Muslims,

00:15:32.480 --> 00:15:37.480
So I struck him from behind on his shoulder blade with my sword,

00:15:37.480 --> 00:15:40.480
Cutting through his armor. He turned upon me

00:15:40.480 --> 00:15:44.480
And squeezed me so violently that I felt the very scent of death,

00:15:44.480 --> 00:15:47.480
But then death overtook him and he released me."

00:15:47.480 --> 00:15:51.480
That is to say, this enemy warrior was massive, powerful,

00:15:51.480 --> 00:15:53.480
Brave, and formidable.

00:15:53.480 --> 00:15:55.610
"I then caught up with 'Umar and asked him:

00:15:55.610 --> 00:15:57.610
'What is the matter with the people?'

00:15:57.610 --> 00:16:00.610
He replied: 'It is the decree of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.'"

00:16:00.610 --> 00:16:06.610
Then the Muslims returned to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, after al-'Abbas had called them back.

00:16:06.610 --> 00:16:09.610
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sat

00:16:09.610 --> 00:16:12.610
After victory was secured in the battle,

00:16:12.610 --> 00:16:14.610
And announced:

00:16:14.610 --> 00:16:17.610
"Whoever slays an enemy and brings clear proof,

00:16:17.610 --> 00:16:19.610
To him belong his spoils."

00:16:19.610 --> 00:16:21.610
Abu Qatadah said: "I stood up and said, 'Who will bear witness for me?'

00:16:21.610 --> 00:16:23.610
But no one spoke,

00:16:23.610 --> 00:16:24.610
So I sat down.

00:16:24.610 --> 00:16:27.610
Then the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, repeated the same statement.

00:16:27.610 --> 00:16:29.610
I stood up again and said, 'Who will bear witness for me?'

00:16:29.610 --> 00:16:33.610
Then the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, repeated it a third time,

00:16:33.610 --> 00:16:36.639
So I stood up and said, 'Who will bear witness for me?'

00:16:36.639 --> 00:16:38.639
Then I sat down.

00:16:38.639 --> 00:16:41.639
Thereupon the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

00:16:41.639 --> 00:16:43.639
'What is the matter with you, O Abu Qatadah?'

00:16:43.639 --> 00:16:45.639
So I informed him of what had happened.

00:16:45.639 --> 00:16:47.639
A man then stood up and said: 'He has spoken the truth;

00:16:47.639 --> 00:16:49.639
The slain man's spoils are in my possession,

00:16:49.639 --> 00:16:51.639
So persuade him to forfeit his claim in my favor.'

00:16:51.639 --> 00:16:54.639
Abu Bakr said: 'No, by Allah!

00:16:54.639 --> 00:16:58.639
The Messenger of Allah will not bypass one of the lions of Allah,

00:16:58.639 --> 00:17:00.639
Who fights for the cause of Allah and His Messenger,

00:17:00.639 --> 00:17:02.639
To hand his spoils over to you!'

00:17:02.639 --> 00:17:05.829
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

00:17:05.829 --> 00:17:06.829
'He has spoken the truth,

00:17:06.829 --> 00:17:07.829
So give the spoils to him.'

00:17:07.829 --> 00:17:09.829
Abu Qatadah said: 'So I took the spoils from him,

00:17:09.829 --> 00:17:10.829
And with them I bought a date-palm garden in the land of Banu Salimah,

00:17:10.829 --> 00:17:14.829
And it was the very first property I acquired in Islam.'"

00:17:14.829 --> 00:17:18.829
The Muslims had rallied back to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:17:18.829 --> 00:17:23.859
And fought the disbelievers fiercely

00:17:23.859 --> 00:17:26.859
Until the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and those with him prevailed

00:17:26.859 --> 00:17:31.859
Through the divine victory granted by Allah Almighty.

00:17:31.859 --> 00:17:34.859
Regarding this event, Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He, revealed:

00:17:34.859 --> 00:17:37.859
﴿And on the day of Hunayn,

00:17:37.859 --> 00:17:42.859
“Allah hath given you victory on many fields and on the day of Huneyn, when ye exulted in your multitude but it availed you naught, and the earth, vast as it is, was straitened for you; then ye turned back in flight;” (9:25)

00:17:42.859 --> 00:17:43.859
When your great numbers elated you,

00:17:43.859 --> 00:17:49.859
But availed you nothing,

00:17:49.859 --> 00:17:53.859
And the earth, vast as it is, constrained you,

00:17:53.859 --> 00:17:56.859
“Allah hath given you victory on many fields and on the day of Huneyn, when ye exulted in your multitude but it availed you naught, and the earth, vast as it is, was straitened for you; then ye turned back in flight;” (9:25)

00:17:56.859 --> 00:18:00.859
Then you turned back in retreat.

00:18:00.859 --> 00:18:04.859
“Then Allah sent His peace of reassurance down upon His messenger and upon the believers, and sent down hosts ye could not see, and punished those who disbelieved. Such is the reward of disbelievers.” (9:26)

00:18:04.859 --> 00:18:08.859
Upon His Messenger and upon the believers,

00:18:08.859 --> 00:18:13.859
“Then Allah sent His peace of reassurance down upon His messenger and upon the believers, and sent down hosts ye could not see, and punished those who disbelieved. Such is the reward of disbelievers.” (9:26)

00:18:13.859 --> 00:18:15.859
And punished those who disbelieved;

00:18:15.859 --> 00:18:20.859
Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.﴾
