'Abd al-'Aziz Ibn 'Abdullah Ibn Baz,

may Allah have mercy on him,

The Book of Purification.

Chapter on Utensils.
0:49
The eminent Imam Ibn Baz, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
0:53
"If it is known that faucets and vessels are plated with gold or silver,
0:59
it is not permissible to use them,
1:02
due to the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him:
1:05
'Whoever drinks from a vessel of gold or silver,
1:08
or a vessel containing anything of that sort,
1:11
only draws the fire of Hell into his belly.'
1:15
This is a general prohibition encompassing pure gold and silver,
1:19
as well as whatever is plated with either of them.
1:22
Furthermore, because plated items carry the adornment and beauty of gold,
1:26
they are forbidden and impermissible by the explicit text of the hadith.
1:29
The same applies to small utensils,
1:32
such as teacups, coffee cups, and spoons;
1:36
it is not permissible for them to be made of gold or silver.
1:39
Rather, it is obligatory to avoid them and beware of using them.
1:43
It is not permissible to use gold and silver in buildings, doors, and the like.
1:49
And in his saying, peace and blessings be upon him:
1:52
'Indeed, they are for the disbelievers in this world,
1:55
and for you'—meaning the Muslims—'in the Hereafter,'
1:58
there is an admonition prohibiting their use in doors, walls, ceilings, furnishings, and the like.
2:05
No one is permitted to use gold and silver vessels under any circumstances,
2:10
neither for practical use nor for decoration;
2:13
the same applies to plated items,
2:15
whether plated with gold or silver.
2:18
Any vessel suspected of being contaminated with impurity,
2:21
whether belonging to disbelievers or others,
2:25
one should wash it and then eat from it,
2:28
just as he, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
2:31
'If you do not find any other vessels,
2:33
then wash them and eat from them.'
2:36
Likewise, performing ablution from them
2:38
is unobjectionable once they are washed.
2:42
Gold teeth are permissible exclusively for women.
2:46
As for men,
2:48
it is not permissible for them to wear gold teeth if an alternative is readily available.
2:53
If a man fits a gold tooth merely for adornment,
2:57
he is obligated to remove it.
2:59
It has been established in authentic hadiths from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him,
3:05
that the hide of a dead animal is purified through tanning;
3:09
once it is tanned, it becomes pure,
3:11
and it may be used for both dry and liquid items.
3:15
This is the correct view,
3:17
because it has been characterized as purified.
3:20
In summary, it is permissible to utilize the hides of dead animals
3:24
from among lawful, edible animals after tanning for all purposes,
3:28
for moist and dry substances,
3:30
for milk and for water.
3:32
As for the skins of predatory beasts, foxes, wolves, and leopards,
3:37
there is extensive disagreement among the scholars regarding them.
3:40
What is proper is that they should neither be acquired nor used,
3:45
because hadiths have been transmitted prohibiting the skins of predatory beasts,
3:49
and prohibiting using them as furnishings or riding upon them.
3:53
Moreover, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, characterized
3:55
tanning as a purification and a form of ritual slaughter;
3:58
this indicates that tanning applies only to what is rendered pure through ritual slaughter.
4:04
Therefore, a believer should not use the skins of predatory beasts;
4:08
this is the weightiest of the scholarly opinions,
4:11
and it is the most cautious course for the believer."
