0:04 The Senior Scholars Project in Kuwait is pleased,
0:07 in cooperation with the Foundation of Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz Ibn Baz,
0:12 may Allah have mercy on him,
0:14 to present to you
0:16 "The Fiqh Choices
0:21 in Matters of Worship and Transactions"
0:25 from the fatwas of the eminent scholar and Imam,
0:30 'Abd al-'Aziz Ibn 'Abd Allah Ibn Baz,
0:33 may Allah have mercy on him,
0:35 compiled and arranged by Shaykh
0:38 Khalid Ibn Sa'ud Ibn 'Amir al-'Ajmi.
0:41 The Book of Purification:
0:45 Chapter on Ghusl (Ritual Bath).
0:47 The eminent Imam Ibn Baz, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
0:54 Performing ghusl on Friday is an emphasized Sunnah.
0:59 Ghusl after cupping (hijamah),
1:01 and ghusl after washing a deceased person,
1:03 are both recommended acts of purification.
1:06 As for his saying, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him:
1:09 "Friday ghusl is obligatory upon every adult,"
1:12 its meaning, according to the majority of the people of knowledge, is that it is highly emphasized,
1:16 just as the Arabs say:
1:18 "A promise is a debt,"
1:20 and "Your right upon me is an obligation."
1:22 This meaning is evidenced by
1:24 his sufficiency, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
1:27 with wudu in some hadiths.
1:30 Applying perfume, using the siwak,
1:32 wearing fine clothes,
1:34 and going early to the Friday prayer,
1:36 are all among the strongly encouraged Sunnahs,
1:39 and none of them is obligatory.
1:43 The assertion of some people
1:45 that when performing ghusl it is obligatory
1:47 for a person to face the qiblah
1:49 is incorrect.
1:51 Whoever performs ghusl to remove major ritual impurity (janabah) on Friday,
1:54 that suffices him in place of the Friday ghusl;
1:57 however, it is preferable to intend both of them together when bathing.
2:01 The Sunnah ghusl for Friday is not validly attained
2:04 unless it is performed after the break of dawn.
2:08 It is best that one's ghusl be performed when setting out
2:11 to the Friday prayer,
2:13 because that is most complete for energy and cleanliness.
2:17 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
2:20 when he had intimacy with his wife,
2:22 used to wash his private parts and perform wudu,
2:24 and then go to sleep, peace and blessings be upon him;
2:27 sometimes he would perform ghusl before that.
2:29 If he performed ghusl, that was more complete,
2:32 but if he slept and then performed ghusl at the end of the night, there was no harm in that.
2:36 However, sleeping without wudu and without ghusl
2:39 is disliked (makruh).
2:41 Ghusl from janabah, menstruation, or post-natal bleeding
2:45 suffices for wudu
2:47 if the person bathing intends purification from both the minor and major ritual impurities.
2:50 Yet it is preferable to clean the private parts (istinja'),
2:53 then perform wudu, and then complete the ghusl,
2:56 following the example of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
3:00 But if one only intends the major ritual impurity,
3:03 then what is appropriate is that one must perform wudu.
3:06 If one touches the private parts during ghusl from major ritual impurity,
3:11 one must repeat the wudu.
3:14 If the ghusl is for Friday, or for cooling off and general cleanliness,
3:18 it does not suffice for wudu, even if one intends that,
3:22 due to the lack of prescribed sequence (tartib),
3:24 which is an obligatory element of wudu,
3:26 and because there is no major purification here under which minor purification could be subsumed by intention;
3:32 rather, one must perform wudu either before or after it.
3:36 Whoever relies solely on the Friday ghusl without performing wudu
3:40 must repeat the prayer as Zuhr,
3:43 because the Friday ghusl does not suffice for wudu.
3:47 A recommended ghusl does not suffice for wudu even if intended,
3:52 unless one observes the proper sequence;
3:54 meaning, one performs wudu while bathing, adhering to both the sequence and the intention.
3:59 If eggs, wheat, lemon, or the like are added to shampoo,
4:04 they become unfit for consumption,
4:06 so there is no harm in washing with them in bathrooms.
4:09 Ghusl is not obligatory for someone who has a wet dream
4:12 unless they find wetness, which is seminal fluid (maniy),
4:16 because of the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him:
4:19 "Water is from water,"
4:21 meaning that the water of ghusl is required due to the fluid of semen,
4:25 and this, according to the people of knowledge, applies to one who has a wet dream.
4:29 Whoever has sexual intercourse with his wife is obliged to perform ghusl,
4:32 even if no emission occurs.
4:36 The hadith: "Whoever washes a deceased person, let him perform ghusl,
4:39 and whoever carries him, let him perform wudu," is weak.
4:42 However, it has been established from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in other hadiths,
4:47 that which indicates the recommendation of ghusl after washing a deceased person.
4:51 As for carrying the deceased, nothing authentic has been reported regarding wudu after it,
4:55 and wudu is not recommended after carrying a bier,
4:58 due to the lack of evidence for it.
5:01 If washing the head during ghusl from janabah or menstruation would cause harm,
5:05 it suffices to wipe over it along with performing tayammum.
5:08 If there is a medicated plaster on the back or flank of a person in a state of janabah,
5:12 or a splint, passing wet hands or water over it suffices,
5:16 and there is no need to remove it;
5:19 rather, whenever water is passed over it, that is sufficient until Allah grants healing,
5:24 and he is not required to perform tayammum; rather, passing water over it suffices.
5:29 If a woman pours three handfuls of water over her head for ghusl from janabah,
5:35 that is sufficient for her,
5:37 and there is no need for her to undo her braids.
5:40 Merely running damp fingers through the hair of the head
5:46 without pouring water is not sufficient;
5:49 water must be poured, even if only once,
5:52 though the Sunnah is to do so three times.
5:54 It has reached us that some women become pure after the break of dawn,
5:59 or before dawn,
6:01 yet delay performing ghusl until after sunrise,
6:05 claiming they wish to perform a more complete, cleaner, and thorough bath.
6:10 This is an error,
6:12 neither permissible in Ramadan nor at any other time,
6:15 because it is obligatory upon her to hasten and perform ghusl in order to perform the prayer on time.
6:21 Whoever wakes up shortly before sunrise in a state of janabah,
6:25 not having prayed Fajr yet,
6:27 must perform ghusl, complete their purification, and then pray;
6:32 they are not permitted to perform tayammum under the pretext of catching the prayer time.
6:36 A man is permitted to have intercourse with his wife more than once without performing ghusl between the two acts,
6:43 though performing ghusl is better.
6:45 The Sunnah is that if he wishes to repeat intercourse without performing ghusl,
6:50 he should perform wudu like that for prayer.
6:52 Traditions have also been reported indicating the permissibility of omitting wudu as well.
6:57 It is recommended for a woman performing ghusl from menstruation or post-natal bleeding
7:01 to bathe using water and sidr (lotus leaves);
7:03 this is what is preferable.
7:05 As for one in a state of janabah, they do not need sidr,
7:08 and plain water suffices.
7:10 Pouring water and making it reach the entire body in ghusl from janabah, menstruation, or post-natal bleeding
7:17 suffices without rubbing the body with the hands, due to the generality of the verses and hadiths on this.
7:23 If seminal fluid is discharged after performing ghusl,
7:26 one is not required to repeat the ghusl;
7:28 rather, one only needs to repeat istinja' and wudu,
7:32 because the emission of semen without sexual desire does not necessitate ghusl.
7:37 If water is scarce,
7:39 and one is unable to complete ghusl with it,
7:42 one performs wudu like that for prayer and performs tayammum for the remainder.
7:46 If a person is in a place where there is only a little water that is insufficient for a full ghusl,
7:53 he washes whatever part of his body he can with it,
7:56 and then performs tayammum for the rest.
7:59 Whoever is unable to perform wudu,
8:02 nor ghusl from janabah, nor tayammum with clean earth,
8:06 prays in whatever state he is in;
8:08 his prayer is valid, and he does not have to make it up.
8:12 If a menstruating woman performs ghusl after attaining purity from menses,
8:17 and then experiences some discharge after purification:
8:20 if the discharge is yellowish or brownish,
8:24 it is not counted as anything,
8:26 but rather takes the ruling of urine;
8:29 whereas if it is overt blood,
8:31 it is considered part of the menses,
8:33 and she must repeat the ghusl once it ceases.
8:37 The body of a person in a state of janabah is pure,
8:39 and likewise, seminal fluid is pure.
8:42 It is permissible for a person in janabah, before bathing,
8:44 to touch items such as clothes, dishes, pots, and the like,
8:49 because he is not impure.
8:51 There is no harm in a person in janabah clipping their nails
8:56 or cutting some of their hair
8:58 if there is a need to do so before performing ghusl.
9:02 There is no harm in a woman breastfeeding her child while in a state of janabah.
9:07 There is no harm in delaying ghusl for janabah without an excuse,
9:11 as long as the time for prayer has not arrived;
9:14 but once the prayer time arrives, ghusl becomes mandatory.
9:17 It has been confirmed in the two Sahihs from the hadith of Hudhayfah and Abu Hurayrah
9:22 that they met the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
9:25 and then slipped away from him.
9:27 He said to them, "What was the matter with you?"
9:30 They replied,
9:31 "We were in a state of janabah,
9:33 and we disliked sitting with you while we were not in a state of purity."
9:37 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
9:40 "A Muslim does not become impure."
9:42 And he did not disapprove of their remaining in a state of ritual impurity.
9:47 What we advise is that hastening to perform ghusl is commendable;
9:52 if one hastens, it is good,
9:54 but it is not obligatory upon him.
9:56 A person may have an impediment,
9:58 going out to the marketplace to purchase a needed item or the like,
10:02 so there is no harm in that.
10:04 Hastening is only obligatory upon him when an obligation requiring purity arrives.
