The Mother of the Believers, 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrated

that al-Harith ibn Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him)

asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), saying:

"O Messenger of Allah, how does revelation come to you?"

The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied:

"Sometimes it comes to me like the ringing of a bell,

and that is the hardest upon me;

then it departs from me, and I have already retained what he said.

And at other times, the angel assumes the form of a man for me

and speaks to me, and I retain what he says."

"I indeed saw revelation descending upon him on an intensely cold day,

and when it departed from him, his forehead would be dripping with sweat."

Revelation used to descend upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) in several states,
