On the authority of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) who also said:

"While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) one day,

there appeared before us a man dressed in extremely white clothes

and with exceedingly black hair.

No signs of travel were visible on him,

yet none of us recognized him.

He walked up and sat down close to the Prophet (peace be upon him),

resting his knees against his knees,

and placing his palms upon his thighs.

He said, 'O Muhammad, tell me about Islam.'

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied,

'Islam is to testify that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah

and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,

to establish prayer,

to pay zakat,

to fast Ramadan,

and to perform the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to find a way there.'

The man said, 'You have spoken the truth.'

He then said, 'Now tell me about Iman (faith).'

“O ye who believe! Believe in Allah and His messenger and the Scripture which He hath revealed unto His messenger, and the Scripture which He revealed aforetime. Whoso disbelieveth in Allah and His angels and His scriptures and His messengers and the Last Day, he verily hath wandered far astray.” (4:136)

He said, 'And to believe in divine destiny (qadar), both its good and its bad.'

The man said, 'You have spoken the truth.'

He said, 'Now tell me about Ihsan (spiritual excellence).'

He replied, 'It is to worship Allah as though you see Him,

for even if you do not see Him, He surely sees you.'

He said, 'Now tell me about the Hour.'

The Prophet replied, 'The one being questioned about it knows no more than the questioner.'

He said, 'Then tell me about its signs.'

He said, 'That the slave-girl gives birth to her mistress,

and that you see barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds

competing with one another in constructing lofty buildings.'

after which the Prophet asked, 'O 'Umar, do you know who the questioner was?'

I replied, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.'

He said, 'That was Gabriel (Jibril).

He came to teach you your religion.'"
