0:09 Chapter on Patience.
0:14 On the authority of Mu'adh ibn Anas, may Allah be pleased with him,
0:18 the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:
0:22 "Whoever suppresses his rage while being able to unleash it,
0:27 Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, will summon him before all creation on the Day of Resurrection
0:33 so that He may let him choose whomsoever he wishes from the maidens of Paradise (*al-hur al-'in*)."
0:38 Related by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi.
0:41 "Suppresses his rage" means swallowing his wrath, bearing its cause, and remaining patient through it.
0:48 Among the benefits of this hadith:
0:52 Encouragement to suppress rage, as it is among the characteristics of the most complete believers,
0:57 in accordance with the saying of the Exalted:
0:59 "And those who suppress anger and pardon people,
1:03 and Allah loves the doers of good."
1:06 Forgiveness is truly acknowledged when one possesses the power to retaliate.
1:11 Strength of will and strength of character
1:14 are demonstrated in critical situations that provoke anger and agitation,
1:19 where a person reins in his anger and suppresses his rage.
1:25 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him,
1:28 a man said to the Prophet, peace be upon him: "Counsel me."
1:33 He said: "Do not get angry."
1:36 The man repeated his request several times,
1:38 and he said: "Do not get angry."
1:41 Related by al-Bukhari.
1:45 Among the benefits of this hadith:
1:47 Offering counsel and imparting it to whoever asks for it;
1:51 rather, it is an obligation due from a Muslim to his brother.
1:54 Repeating the advice holds great benefit for the one being advised,
1:58 for repetition reinforces understanding.
2:00 The immense harm of anger and what results from it,
2:04 and that it never brings any good,
2:06 unless it is solely for the sake of Allah.
2:08 The condemnation of anger and of approaching its triggers,
2:12 because avoiding it encompasses all goodness.
2:15 Blameworthy anger is that which is aroused by worldly matters,
2:19 whereas praiseworthy anger
2:21 is that which is for the sake of Allah and the vindication of His religion.
2:24 And he, peace and blessings be upon him,
2:27 would never become angry unless the sanctities of Allah were violated.
2:31 Whoever falls into anger ought
2:34 to repel it through several means, including:
2:37 seeking refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan,
2:40 remaining silent,
2:42 for the Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
2:45 "When one of you becomes angry, let him remain silent,"
2:48 and sitting down if he is standing,
2:51 and lying down if he is sitting;
2:54 for the Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
2:57 "When one of you becomes angry while standing,
3:00 let him sit down;
3:02 if his anger departs, well and good,
3:04 otherwise let him lie down."
3:06 He should also perform ablution (*wudu'*).
3:09 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, he said:
3:15 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:
3:19 "Affliction will not cease to befall a believing man and a believing woman
3:22 in their persons, their children, and their wealth,
3:25 until they meet Allah Almighty with no sin remaining upon them."
3:29 Related by al-Tirmidhi.
3:33 Among the benefits of this hadith:
3:35 The believer is subject to testing through various kinds of tribulations.
3:39 Glad tidings for the afflicted believer,
3:42 as the Exalted says:
3:44 "And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger..."
3:48 “And surely We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth and lives and crops; but give glad tidings to the steadfast,” (2:155)
3:52 "And give glad tidings to the patient."
3:55 Tribulation expiates sins,
3:57 provided the servant is content and does not harbor resentment.
4:00 It is from the mercy of Allah toward His believing servants
4:03 that He expiates their sins in this worldly life
4:06 through worldly adversities and afflictions.
4:10 On the authority of Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, who said:
4:15 'Uyaynah ibn Hisn arrived
4:17 and stayed with his nephew, al-Hurr ibn Qays,
4:20 who was among the group whom 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, kept close to himself.
4:25 The Qur'an reciters (*qurra'*) were the members of 'Umar's council and his consultative assembly,
4:31 whether they were middle-aged or youths.
4:34 'Uyaynah said to his nephew:
4:36 "O my nephew!
4:38 You have standing with this leader,
4:41 so request permission for me to enter upon him."
4:43 He sought permission,
4:44 and 'Umar granted him leave.
4:46 When he entered,
4:48 he said:
4:49 "Woe to you, O Ibn al-Khattab!
4:51 By Allah, you do not give us abundantly,
4:54 nor do you judge between us with justice!"
4:56 Thereupon 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, became so enraged
4:59 that he was on the verge of striking him.
5:01 But al-Hurr said to him:
5:03 "O Commander of the Believers!
5:05 Indeed, Allah Almighty
5:07 said to His Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him:
5:10 'Show forgiveness,
5:12 enjoin what is right,
5:13 and turn away from the ignorant.'
5:16 And this man is indeed among the ignorant!"
5:19 By Allah, 'Umar did not transgress it once he recited it,
5:23 for he was ever halting at the Book of Allah Almighty.
5:27 Related by al-Bukhari.
5:29 "The reciters" (*al-Qurra'*):
5:32 that is, the scholars devoted to worship.
5:34 "The members of 'Umar's council":
5:37 that is, those who constantly attended his assembly.
5:40 "Middle-aged" (*kuhul*):
5:41 *kuhul*
5:42 refers to those who have surpassed thirty years of age.
5:45 "You have standing" (*wajh*):
5:47 that is, you possess prestige and high status.
5:49 "Abundantly" (*al-jazl*):
5:51 that is, ample provisions and gifts.
5:53 "What is right" (*al-'urf*):
5:54 that is, good deeds and virtue (*al-ma'ruf*).
5:56 "Turn away from the ignorant":
5:58 that is, do not counter their foolishness with the like.
6:01 "Ever halting at the Book of Allah":
6:04 that is, strictly adhering to its rulings and never exceeding them.
6:10 Among the benefits of this hadith:
6:12 The high status of the people of the Qur'an and its bearers,
6:15 namely the scholars who act according to its rulings.
6:18 Guidance for the ruler
6:20 to take for himself an inner circle of scholars,
6:23 sitting in their company and seeking their counsel.
6:26 The opinion of the scholars is never born of whim,
6:29 nor of self-interest;
6:31 rather, it is for the vindication of Allah and His Messenger.
6:34 For the truth is dearer to them than their own selves,
6:37 their fathers, their sons, and their kinsfolk.
6:41 The merit of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him,
6:44 in that he strictly adhered to the limits set by Allah,
6:47 fully compliant with His commands,
6:49 neither exceeding them nor transgressing them.
6:54 The wisdom of the scholar in admonishing his leader.
6:57 The recommendation that a ruler show patience toward his subjects
7:00 and maintain earnest concern for their best interests.
7:03 It is incumbent upon every official and leader
7:05 not to hesitate in returning to the truth and what is correct,
7:09 for returning to the truth is a virtue.
7:12 On the authority of Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him,
7:16 the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:
7:20 "Indeed, after me there will be favoritism and matters you will disapprove of."
7:25 They said: "O Messenger of Allah,
7:28 what do you command us to do?"
7:30 He said:
7:31 "Fulfill the right incumbent upon you,
7:34 and ask Allah for what is rightfully yours."
7:37 Agreed upon.
7:39 "Favoritism" (*atharah*):
7:40 monopolizing a matter to the exclusion of others who have a rightful claim to it.
7:44 Among the benefits of this hadith:
7:49 Bearing divine decree with patience,
7:51 and accepting predestination, both its sweet and its bitter,
7:54 its good and its adversity.
7:56 The exhortation to hear and obey,
7:58 even if the ruler is unjust and tyrannical;
8:02 he is to be accorded his right of obedience,
8:04 and must not be rebelled against or deposed;
8:07 rather, one should beseech Allah Almighty to restrain his harm,
8:11 avert his evil, and rectify his condition.
8:13 The hadith is among the proofs of his Prophethood, peace and blessings be upon him,
8:18 as he foretold what would occur within his Ummah.
8:22 The permissibility of informing a person who will be tested
8:25 of the trials expected to befall him,
8:28 so that he may prepare his soul when what was promised comes to pass.
8:31 Clinging firmly to the Book and the Sunnah
8:34 is a deliverance from discord and disagreement,
8:37 and a light by which you see truth as truth
8:39 and falsehood as falsehood.
8:41 Exhortation to preserve the unity of the Muslim community,
8:46 for warding off harm takes precedence over procuring benefit.
8:50 On the authority of Abu Yahya Usayd ibn Hudayr, may Allah be pleased with him,
8:56 a man from the Ansar said:
8:59 "O Messenger of Allah,
9:01 will you not appoint me as you have appointed so-and-so?"
9:05 He replied: "Indeed, you will encounter favoritism after me,
9:09 so be patient until you meet me at the Basin (*al-Hawd*)."
9:13 Agreed upon.
9:17 "Appoint me" means assign me as an administrative official.
9:21 "The Basin" refers to the Basin of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, on the Day of Resurrection.
9:27 Among the benefits of this hadith:
9:31 It is impermissible to seek positions of authority and governance,
9:34 and whoever asks for them should not be granted them.
9:37 His saying, peace and blessings be upon him,
9:40 "You will see favoritism after me," indicates
9:43 that monopolizing worldly spoils
9:46 would only take place after his lifetime, peace be upon him,
9:49 and would not happen during his era.
9:52 Bearing the injustice of a ruler with patience when he monopolizes worldly wealth.
9:57 It contains an affirmation of the virtue of the Ansar,
10:00 and that they are among those who will come to drink at the Basin of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
10:06 On the authority of Abu Ibrahim 'Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa, may Allah be pleased with both of them,
10:13 the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
10:16 on one of the days when he encountered the enemy,
10:20 waited until the sun had declined,
10:24 then stood before them and said:
10:26 "O people,
10:28 do not wish to encounter the enemy,
10:31 and ask Allah for well-being (*'afiyah*);
10:33 "So when you meet them in battle, be steadfast,
10:36 and know that Paradise lies beneath the shades of swords."
10:40 Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed:
10:44 "O Allah, Revealer of the Book,
10:47 Driver of the clouds,
10:49 and Defeater of the confederates,
10:51 defeat them and grant us victory over them!"
10:54 It is agreed upon.
10:56 "During one of his days"—
10:59 that is, during one of his military expeditions and battles.
11:02 "He waited"—
11:03 meaning he delayed engaging them in combat.
11:05 "The sun declined"—
11:07 meaning it tilted from the zenith toward the west,
11:11 which is the time past midday.
11:13 "The confederates (al-Ahzab)"—
11:15 meaning the disbelievers who allied against the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).
11:21 Among the benefits derived from this hadith:
11:25 Preparing for jihad,
11:27 which includes building military strength,
11:29 marching out to confront the enemy,
11:31 and turning to Allah Almighty in supplication
11:34 after abandoning sins and turning in sincere repentance;
11:38 The recommendation of supplicating during distress and hardship,
11:42 especially when the battle lines clash,
11:45 for that is indeed a moment when supplications are answered;
11:49 The mercy of the Prophet (peace be upon him)
11:53 toward his Companions and his Ummah;
11:56 Not relying solely on material strength,
12:00 while never abandoning caution, vigilance, and resolve;
12:03 Exercising patience and steadfastness upon confronting the enemy,
12:06 which is the most vital element of firmness in jihad;
12:09 Advising those who fight in the cause of Allah
12:12 with that which ensures their righteousness and success,
12:14 and teaching them what they need to know;
12:17 The recommendation of beseeching Allah through His supreme attributes
12:21 and His most beautiful names;
12:23 The prohibition of wishing to meet the enemy;
12:26 Riyad al-Salihin.
