0:54 A radiant chapter from the biography of the Great Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

1:00 and a magnificent portrayal of life within the noble household of prophecy,

1:05 and a splendid example of the noble Companions.

1:09 Fatima Az-Zahra', may Allah be pleased with her, was born

1:13 in the year the Ka'bah was built,

1:15 five years before the Prophetic mission.

1:19 As for her mother, she was the noble Razan,

1:22 who combined sound intellect with noble lineage,

1:26 and possessed virtuous character,

1:29 and abundant wealth.

1:31 She was known in the pre-Islamic era as "At-Tahirah" (the Pure),

1:34 and was considered the foremost lady of Quraysh.

1:37 She believed in the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

1:41 when people disbelieved,

1:43 and affirmed him when people denied him,

1:46 and supported him with her wealth when people deprived him.

1:49 Allah had blessed this dignified lady with a beautiful face,

1:54 along with the excellent character He bestowed upon her,

1:57 noble lineage,

1:59 and considerable wealth.

2:01 This is the mother of Fatima Az-Zahra'.

2:04 As for her father, he is the master of the Messengers,

2:07 the Seal of the Prophets,

2:09 and the Imam of the God-fearing.

2:12 How noble is this noble lineage as a lineage!

2:15 And how great is this mighty father as a father!

2:18 Fatima Az-Zahra' was the youngest of her parents' children,

2:22 and the youngest child is nurtured amidst tenderness and affection,

2:27 and grows up surrounded by care and love.

2:30 Therefore, Fatima was the beloved flower of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

2:36 He would be pleased if she was pleased,

2:38 and displeased if she was displeased.

2:40 However, the parents' affection

2:43 did not prevent them from nurturing their cherished daughter,

2:47 and preparing her to bear responsibilities.

2:50 It is narrated that she would manage her household affairs alone,

2:55 with no one assisting her on most days.

2:58 And that she would tend to her father's wounds, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, during the Battle of Uhud.

3:05 When Az-Zahra' reached womanhood,

3:09 many eyes turned towards her.

3:11 Among those who proposed to her were Abu Bakr and Umar,

3:15 but the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, politely declined them,

3:21 as if he intended to reserve her for Ali, may Allah be pleased with him.

3:26 In the eighth year of Hijrah,

3:29 Ali ibn Abi Talib proposed to Fatima Az-Zahra'.

3:33 The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, quickly responded to his request.

3:38 Ali prostrated in gratitude to Allah.

3:41 When he raised his head from his prostration,

3:44 the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to him,

3:48 "May Allah bless you both and be upon you,

3:51 and make your union blessed,

3:53 and bring forth from you much good."

3:56 The marriage contract of Fatima Az-Zahra' to Ali ibn Abi Talib was witnessed by

4:02 Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman,

4:05 and Talhah and Az-Zubayr from the Emigrants,

4:08 and a similar number from the Ansar.

4:11 When the people had taken their seats,

4:14 the Messenger, peace be upon him, said,

4:16 "Praise be to Allah, praised for His blessings,

4:19 worshipped by His power.

4:22 Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has made kinship by marriage a subsequent lineage,

4:27 a binding obligation,

4:29 a just decree,

4:31 and a comprehensive good,

4:33 or a thorn in the wombs,

4:35 and a duty upon mankind.

4:37 So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said:

4:39 “And He it is Who hath created man from water, and hath appointed for him kindred by blood and kindred by marriage; for thy Lord is ever Powerful.” (25:54)

4:45 "And it is He who has created man from water, and has made him [of] relationship by blood and marriage. And ever is your Lord competent." (Qur'an 25:54)

4:49 And your Lord is Ever Competent.

4:53 "I bear witness to you that I have married Fatima to Ali,"

4:56 "for 400 dirhams of silver,"

4:59 "if Ali is pleased with this, according to the established Sunnah,"

5:02 "and the obligatory duty."

5:04 So Allah united them,

5:06 blessed them,

5:08 and made their offspring pure.

5:10 I say this and seek forgiveness from Allah, the Almighty.

5:14 And the foremost lady of the Muslims was escorted

5:17 to her husband's home,

5:19 and she had no dowry except a simple bed,

5:23 a leather pillow stuffed with palm fiber,

5:26 a leather basin,

5:28 a waterskin, a sieve,

5:30 a drinking horn, and a cup,

5:32 a perfume flask, and two jars.

5:35 The noble Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

5:38 could not bear Fatima's distance from him,

5:41 so he resolved to move her to his vicinity.

5:44 The homes of Harithah ibn An-Nu'man were adjacent to his.

5:48 So he came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

5:52 and said, "I have heard that you wish to move Fatima closer to you.

5:57 These are my homes,

5:59 and they are the closest homes of Banu An-Najjar to you.

6:02 Indeed, I and my wealth belong to Allah and His Messenger.

6:06 By Allah, O Messenger of Allah,

6:09 the wealth you take from me

6:11 is more beloved to me than that which you leave."

6:14 So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,

6:18 "You have spoken the truth. May Allah bless you."

6:21 Then he moved Fatima to his vicinity,

6:24 and housed her in one of the homes of Harithah, may Allah be pleased with him.

6:29 And from the time Az-Zahra' settled near her father,

6:33 he would visit her home every morning.

6:36 When the dawn call to prayer sounded,

6:38 he would hold the doorframe of her house and say,

6:42 "Peace be upon you, O People of the House, and may Allah purify you."

6:46 And the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

6:50 when he returned from a journey,

6:52 would begin with the mosque, praying two rak'ahs,

6:55 then he would proceed to Fatima's house,

6:57 and stay with her for a long time,

6:59 then he would visit the homes of his wives.

7:02 It is narrated from Muhammad ibn Qays

7:04 that the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

7:07 went out on a journey once,

7:10 and Ali ibn Abi Talib was with him.

7:12 Fatima, may Allah be pleased with her,

7:15 made two bracelets, a necklace, and two earrings in their absence,

7:19 and hung a curtain on the door of the house,

7:22 in anticipation of her father and husband's arrival.

7:25 When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, arrived,

7:28 he entered her home.

7:30 His Companions stood at the door, unsure

7:33 whether to stay or leave,

7:35 due to his prolonged stay with her.

7:37 Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, emerged,

7:41 and anger was visible on his face.

7:43 He then sat on the pulpit.

7:45 At that moment, Fatima, may Allah be pleased with her, realized

7:49 that he was displeased because of what he saw of the bracelets, necklace, earrings, and curtain.

7:55 So she removed her earrings, necklace, and bracelets,

7:59 and took down the curtain,

8:01 and sent them to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

8:05 And she said to the one who carried them,

8:08 "Tell the Messenger,

8:10 'Your daughter sends you her greetings,

8:12 and tells you to spend this in the cause of Allah.'"

8:16 When it reached him, he said,

8:18 "I have done so. May her father be sacrificed for her.

8:21 This world is not for Muhammad nor for the family of Muhammad.

8:25 If this world were worth even the wing of a mosquito in the sight of Allah,

8:30 He would not give a disbeliever a sip of water from it."

8:33 Then, Fatima Az-Zahra's household

8:36 soon became blessed with righteous offspring.

8:39 The noble parents were blessed with Hasan, Husayn, and Muhsin,

8:44 and Zaynab and Umm Kulthum.

8:47 The joy of the noble Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was immense for them.

8:52 It is narrated that when Hasan was born,

8:55 his parents named him Harb.

8:58 Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, came and said,

9:02 "Show me my son.

9:04 What did you name him?"

9:06 They said, "Harb."

9:08 He said, "Rather, he is Hasan."

9:10 The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, would dote on Fatima's children,

9:16 find solace in them, play with them, and carry them.

9:20 And sometimes one of them would ride on his shoulder while he prayed,

9:24 and he would be gentle in his prayer,

9:26 prolonging his prostration,

9:28 so as not to dislodge him from his perch.

9:31 It was his custom, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, to spend the night at Fatima's house

9:36 from time to time,

9:38 and to personally attend to the service of her children while they and their parents sat by.

9:43 One night, he heard Hasan asking for water.

9:48 So he, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, went to a waterskin,

9:52 and began to pour it into a cup.

9:54 Husayn extended his hand to take the water,

9:57 but he withheld it from him and began with Hasan.

10:00 So Fatima said,

10:02 "It seems he is more beloved to you."

10:04 He replied, peace be upon him,

10:07 "He asked for water first."

10:09 And Fatima, may Allah be pleased with her,

10:12 when she entered upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

10:16 he would take her hand, welcome her,

10:19 and seat her in his place.

10:21 And when he entered upon her,

10:23 she would rise for him, welcome him,

10:26 take his hand, and kiss it.

10:29 She entered upon him during his final illness, the one in which he passed away.

10:32 He whispered something to her, and she wept.

10:35 Then he whispered something else to her, and she laughed.

10:38 Aisha witnessed this,

10:41 and thought to herself,

10:43 "I used to think this woman had a special status over other women,

10:46 but she is just like them.

10:49 While she was weeping, she was laughing."

10:54 When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, passed away,

10:58 she asked her about that.

11:00 She whispered to me, informing me that he was dead.

11:04 So I wept.

11:06 Then she whispered to me that I would be the first of my family to join him.

11:10 So I laughed.

11:12 And Fatimah did not remain long after the passing of her father, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

11:17 She joined him after a few months.

11:20 It is said she remained six, or three, or two months.

11:24 This is according to differing narrations.

11:27 So in Ramadan of the 11th year of Hijrah,

11:30 Fatimah al-Zahra answered the call of her Lord,

11:34 and rejoiced in joining her father.

11:37 And when her death approached,

11:39 she took charge of washing herself with her own hands.

11:42 And she said to her companion, Asma bint Umays,

11:46 after I have washed myself as well as one can wash,

11:49 "O my mother [a term of endearment, not literal mother],

11:51 bring me the new clothes."

11:53 So she put them on, then said:

11:55 "I have washed myself.

11:57 So let no one uncover my shroud."

12:00 Then she smiled.

12:02 She had not smiled since the passing of her father,

12:05 except for the moment she departed this life.

12:08 May Allah have mercy on the fragrant flower of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

12:13 with vast mercy.

12:15 For she was wedded to Ali in Ramadan,

12:18 and she was wedded to Paradise in Ramadan as well.

12:22 Fatimah al-Zahra, may Allah be pleased with her,

12:30 is the fragrant flower of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
