0:00 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
0:05 It is Paradise.
0:08 Ibn al-Qayyim’s description of Paradise.
0:24 All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
0:26 May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad.
0:29 And upon all his family and companions.
0:33 To proceed:
0:34 Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said in his description of Paradise:
0:38 How can one estimate the worth of a home that Allah fashioned with His own hand?
0:43 He made it a dwelling for those He loves.
0:45 He filled it with His mercy, His honors, and His good pleasure.
0:50 He described its bliss as the supreme triumph.
0:53 And its sovereignty as a magnificent kingdom.
0:55 He deposited within it all goodness in its entirety.
0:59 And He purified it from every defect, affliction, and deficiency.
1:03 If you ask about its earth and soil,
1:06 It is musk and saffron.
1:09 If you ask about its ceiling, it is the Throne of the Most Merciful.
1:13 If you ask about its floor, it is fragrant musk.
1:17 If you ask about its pebbles, they are pearls and jewels.
1:22 If you ask about its construction, it is a brick of silver and a brick of gold.
1:29 If you ask about its trees, there is no tree therein but that its trunk is of gold and silver.
1:36 Not of firewood and wood.
1:39 If you ask about its fruit,
1:41 It is like large jars in size.
1:43 Softer than butter,
1:45 And sweeter than honey.
1:47 If you ask about its leaves,
1:49 They are the finest of silken garments.
1:53 If you ask about its rivers,
1:55 They are rivers of water that does not stagnate.
1:58 And rivers of milk,
2:00 The taste of which never changes.
2:02 And rivers of wine, a delight,
2:04 To those who drink.
2:06 And rivers of honey,
2:08 Purified.
2:10 If you ask about their food,
2:12 It is fruit of whatever they choose.
2:14 And the meat of birds,
2:16 Of whatever they desire.
2:18 If you ask about their drink,
2:20 It is Tasnim, ginger,
2:22 And camphor.
2:24 If you ask about their vessels,
2:26 They are vessels of gold,
2:28 And silver, in the clarity,
2:30 Of crystal.
2:32 If you ask about the width of its gates,
2:34 The distance between the two doorposts,
2:36 Is a journey of forty years.
2:38 Yet a day will come,
2:40 Upon it,
2:42 When it is crowded with throngs.
2:44 If you ask about the rustling,
2:46 Of the wind through its trees,
2:48 It stirs,
2:50 With delight for those who hear it.
2:52 If you ask about its shade,
2:54 There is a single tree in it,
2:56 Which,
2:58 A swift, diligent rider,
3:00 Travels in its shade for a hundred years,
3:02 Without crossing it.
3:04 If you ask about its vastness,
3:06 The lowest of its inhabitants,
3:08 Travels within his kingdom, his couches,
3:10 His palaces, and his gardens,
3:12 For a distance of a thousand years.
3:14 If you ask about,
3:17 Its tents and pavilions,
3:19 A single tent,
3:21 Is a hollowed-out pearl,
3:23 Sixty miles in height.
3:25 Of those tents.
3:27 If you ask about its upper chambers,
3:29 They are rooms, above which are,
3:31 Built rooms,
3:33 Beneath which flow,
3:35 The rivers.
3:37 If you ask about its height,
3:39 Look at the star,
3:41 Rising or setting on the horizon,
3:43 Which one can barely,
3:45 Perceive with the eyes.
3:47 If you ask about the clothing of its people,
3:49 It is silk and gold.
3:51 If you ask about their furnishings,
3:53 Their linings,
3:55 Are of thick silk,
3:57 Spread out in the highest,
3:59 Ranks.
4:01 If you ask about their thrones,
4:03 They are couches upon which,
4:05 Are curtains, fastened,
4:07 With buttons of gold.
4:09 They have no gaps,
4:11 Nor openings.
4:13 If you ask about the faces of its people,
4:15 And their beauty, it is like,
4:17 The image of the moon.
4:19 If you ask about their age,
4:21 They are thirty-three years old,
4:23 In the image,
4:25 Of the father of mankind.
4:27 If you ask about what they hear,
4:29 It is the singing of their spouses,
4:31 From the wide-eyed houris.
4:33 And higher than that,
4:35 Is hearing the voices of the angels,
4:37 And the prophets.
4:39 And higher than both,
4:41 Is the speech of the Lord of the worlds.
4:43 If you ask about their mounts,
4:45 Upon which they visit one another,
4:47 They are noble steeds,
4:49 Of whatever Allah wills,
4:51 Carrying them wherever,
4:53 If you ask about,
4:55 Their ornaments and attire,
4:57 They are bracelets of gold and pearls.
4:59 Upon their heads,
5:01 They wear crowns.
5:03 If you ask about their servants,
5:06 They are immortal youths,
5:08 As if they were hidden pearls.
5:10 If you ask about,
5:12 Their brides and spouses,
5:14 They are the full-breasted maidens of equal age,
5:16 In whose limbs,
5:18 There flows,
5:20 The bloom of youth.
5:22 The roses and apples,
5:24 Are what their cheeks wear.
5:26 And the pomegranates,
5:28 Are what their bosoms contain.
5:30 And the strung pearls,
5:32 Are what their mouths hold.
5:34 And for softness and delicacy,
5:36 Are their waists.
5:38 The sun runs,
5:40 Through the beauty of her face,
5:42 When she appears.
5:44 And lightning flashes,
5:46 From between her teeth,
5:48 When she smiles.
5:50 If she meets her beloved,
5:52 Then say what you will,
5:54 About the meeting of the two luminaries.
5:56 And if she speaks,
5:58 What is your thought,
6:00 Of the conversation of two lovers?
6:02 And if he embraces her,
6:04 What is your thought,
6:06 Of the intertwining of two branches?
6:08 He sees his own face,
6:10 In the surface of her cheek,
6:12 As one sees it in a mirror,
6:14 Which a polisher has burnished.
6:16 And he sees the marrow of her shins,
6:18 From behind the flesh,
6:20 Not hidden by her skin,
6:22 Nor her bone,
6:24 Nor her garments.
6:26 If she were to look upon the world,
6:28 She would fill all that is between the earth,
6:30 And the sky with fragrance.
6:32 And she would cause the mouths,
6:34 Of all creation to utter praise,
6:36 Magnification, and glorification of Allah.
6:38 And she would adorn for herself,
6:40 All that is between the horizons.
6:42 And every eye,
6:44 Would be closed to all else.
6:46 And she would eclipse the light of the sun,
6:48 Just as the sun,
6:50 Eclipses the light of the stars.
6:52 And everyone on the face of the earth,
6:54 Would believe in Allah, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer.
6:56 And her head-covering,
6:59 Upon her head,
7:01 Is better than the world and all that is in it.
7:03 And her union,
7:05 Is more desirable to him than all,
7:07 His wishes.
7:09 She does not increase with the passing,
7:11 Of ages, except in beauty,
7:13 And splendor.
7:15 She does not increase with the length of time,
7:17 Except in love and intimacy.
7:21 Free from pregnancy and childbirth,
7:23 And menstruation and postpartum bleeding.
7:25 Purified from mucus,
7:27 And saliva,
7:29 And urine and excrement,
7:31 And all other impurities.
7:33 Her youth never fades,
7:35 Her garments never wear out,
7:37 Her beauty never fades,
7:39 nor does the splendor of her attire,
7:41 and one never tires of the sweetness of her company.
7:43 She has restrained her gaze
7:45 for her spouse alone,
7:47 never casting it toward anyone
7:49 else.
7:51 He, too, has restrained his gaze for her,
7:53 for she is the ultimate object of his desire
7:55 and his heart’s longing.
7:57 If he looks at her, she brings him joy,
7:59 and if he commands her to obey him,
8:01 she obeys.
8:03 If he is away from her, she remains chaste,
8:05 and he is with her
8:07 in absolute peace and security.
8:09 This is she,
8:11 whom no human has touched before him,
8:13 nor any jinn.
8:15 Every time he looks at her,
8:17 she fills his heart with joy,
8:19 and every time she speaks,
8:21 she fills his ears
8:23 with words like pearls, strung together
8:25 or scattered.
8:27 When she appears,
8:29 she fills the palace and the chamber with light.
8:31 If you ask about her age,
8:34 they are peers,
8:36 in the prime of youth.
8:38 If you ask about her beauty,
8:40 have you ever seen the sun and the moon?
8:42 If you ask about her eyes,
8:44 they have the deepest black
8:46 in the clearest white,
8:48 with the most beautiful, wide-eyed gaze.
8:50 If you ask about her stature,
8:52 have you ever seen
8:54 the most graceful of branches?
8:56 If you ask about her bosom,
8:58 they are full and firm,
9:00 like the swelling
9:02 of a pomegranate.
9:04 If you ask about her complexion,
9:06 it is as if it were ruby
9:08 and coral.
9:10 If you ask about her character,
9:12 they are the virtuous,
9:14 the beautiful,
9:16 in whom is combined
9:18 both outer beauty and inner excellence.
9:20 They have been granted beauty of the soul
9:22 and of the form,
9:24 for they are the delight of the spirits
9:26 and the joy of the eyes.
9:28 If you ask about the beauty of their companionship
9:30 and the pleasure found there,
9:32 they are the affectionate, loving women
9:34 toward their spouses,
9:36 with a gentleness of manner
9:38 that blends with the soul
9:40 in perfect harmony.
9:42 What, then, do you think of a woman
9:44 who, when she smiles at the face
9:46 of her husband, illuminates
9:48 Paradise with her smile?
9:50 And when she moves from one palace
9:52 to another,
9:54 you would say, "This is the sun
9:56 moving through the constellations
9:58 of its orbit."
10:00 If she converses with her husband,
10:02 how beautiful is that conversation!
10:04 If she embraces him,
10:06 how delightful is that
10:08 embrace and closeness!
10:10 If she sings,
10:12 what a delight to the eyes
10:14 and the ears!
10:16 If she entertains and brings pleasure,
10:18 how wonderful is that
10:20 companionship and enjoyment!
10:22 If she kisses,
10:24 there is nothing more desirable
10:26 to him than that kiss.
10:28 And if she grants herself,
10:30 there is nothing more delightful or sweeter
10:32 than that gift.
10:34 This is so.
10:37 If you ask about the Day of Increase,
10:39 and visiting the Almighty, the Praiseworthy,
10:41 and seeing His Face,
10:43 which is exalted above any representation
10:45 or resemblance,
10:47 just as you see the sun at midday
10:49 and the moon on a full-moon night,
10:51 as has been transmitted repeatedly
10:53 from the Truthful, the Believed, regarding it—
10:55 and that is found
10:57 in the Sahih collections, the Sunan,
10:59 and the Musnad collections,
11:01 from Jarir, Suhayb,
11:03 Anas, Abu Hurayrah,
11:05 Abu Musa, and Abu Sa'id—
11:07 then listen:
11:09 The day the caller calls out,
11:11 "O people of Paradise,
11:13 your Lord,
11:15 Blessed and Exalted is He, invites you to visit Him,
11:17 so come forth to
11:19 His visitation."
11:21 They will say, "We hear
11:23 and we obey."
11:25 They will rise to the visitation, hastening.
11:27 Suddenly, the noble mounts
11:29 have been prepared for them,
11:31 and they will mount upon their backs,
11:33 rushing.
11:35 Until, when they reach the wide
11:37 valley that was appointed
11:39 as their meeting place,
11:41 and they are gathered there,
11:43 the caller will not leave any of them
11:45 behind.
11:47 The Lord, Blessed and Exalted is He, will command
11:49 His Throne to be set up there.
11:51 Then there will be set up for them
11:53 pulpits of light,
11:55 pulpits of pearl,
11:57 pulpits of chrysolite,
11:59 pulpits of gold,
12:01 and pulpits of silver.
12:03 The lowest of them—
12:05 and far be it from them that there should be among them
12:07 anyone of low status—will sit upon mounds
12:09 of musk,
12:11 and they will not feel that those on the pulpits
12:13 are above them in gifts.
12:15 Until, when they are settled
12:17 in their seats
12:19 and their places are secure,
12:21 the caller will call out,
12:23 "O people of Paradise,
12:25 you have a promise from Allah
12:27 that He wishes
12:29 to fulfill for you."
12:31 They will say, "What is it?
12:33 Has He not whitened our faces,
12:35 weighed down our scales,
12:37 admitted us into Paradise,
12:39 and distanced us from
12:41 the Fire?"
12:43 While they are in that state,
12:45 a light will shine upon them,
12:47 for which Paradise will glow.
12:49 They will raise their heads,
12:51 and there is the Almighty, Majestic is He,
12:53 looking down upon them from above.
12:55 He will say, "O people of Paradise,
12:57 peace be upon you."
12:59 This greeting will be answered with nothing
13:01 better
13:03 than their saying,
13:05 "O Allah, You are Peace,
13:07 and from You is peace.
13:09 Blessed are You, O Possessor of
13:11 Majesty and Honor."
13:13 Then the Lord, Blessed and Exalted is He, will manifest to them,
13:15 smiling at them,
13:17 and He will say,
13:19 "O people of Paradise!"
13:21 The first thing they will hear
13:23 from Him,
13:25 Exalted is He,
13:27 will be,
13:29 "Where are My servants who
13:31 obeyed Me in the unseen
13:33 and did not see Me?
13:35 This is the Day of Increase."
13:37 They will agree upon
13:39 one word:
13:41 "We are pleased,
13:43 so be pleased with us."
13:45 He will say,
13:47 "O people of Paradise,
13:49 I am pleased with you.
13:51 I did not settle you in My Paradise—
13:53 this is the Day of Increase—
13:55 except to ask of Me."
13:57 They will agree upon one word:
13:59 "Show us Your Face,
14:01 that we may look upon it."
14:03 So the Lord,
14:05 Majestic is His Majesty, will remove the veils
14:07 and manifest to them,
14:09 and there will cover them of His light
14:11 that which, had Allah,
14:13 Exalted is He, not decreed
14:15 So that they are not consumed,
14:17 and there remains in that
14:20 gathering no one
14:22 but that their Lord,
14:24 Exalted is He, addresses them directly,
14:26 to the point that He says, "O
14:28 so-and-so, do you remember
14:30 the day you did such-and-such?"
14:32 reminding him of some
14:34 of his betrayals in the worldly life.
14:36 He will say, "O
14:38 my Lord, did You not forgive me?"
14:40 He will reply, "Indeed,
14:42 it is by My forgiveness
14:44 that you have reached this station of yours."
14:46 Oh, the delight of the ears
14:48 at that discourse,
14:50 and oh, the joy of the eyes
14:52 of the righteous as they gaze
14:54 upon the Noble Countenance
14:56 in the abode of the Hereafter.
14:58 And oh, the humiliation of those returning
15:00 with a losing bargain.
15:02 [Some] faces that Day
15:04 will be radiant,
15:06 looking toward their Lord.
15:08 And [some] faces
15:10 that Day
15:12 will be contorted,
15:14 expecting that there will be done to them
15:16 something back-breaking.
15:19 So hasten to the Gardens of Eden,
15:21 for they are
15:23 our original homes,
15:25 and therein is our encampment.
15:27 But we are captives of
15:29 the enemy; so do you think
15:31 we shall return to our
15:33 homelands and be safe?
15:35 O Allah, we
15:38 ask You for Paradise and its bliss,
15:40 and we ask You for the highest
15:42 level of Paradise,
15:44 without reckoning
15:46 or punishment.
15:48 O Allah, amen.
15:50 And the journey has a continuation;
15:52 it is
15:54 Paradise.
