On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him.

From the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who said:

While a man was in a desolate stretch of land,

He heard a voice in a cloud saying,

"Water the garden of so-and-so."

That cloud then drifted away,

And poured its water onto a rocky, volcanic tract of land.

Suddenly, one of the channels there

Absorbed all of that water.

The man followed the water,

And found a man standing in his garden,

Redirecting the water with his shovel.

He said to him,

"O servant of Allah,

What is your name?"

He replied,

"So-and-so,"

Giving the same name he had heard in the cloud.

The man then asked him,

"O servant of Allah,

Why did you ask me my name?"

He replied,

"I heard a voice in the cloud

Whose water this is, saying,

'Water the garden of so-and-so,'

Using your name.

So, what do you do with it?"

He said,

"Since you have said this,

I observe what it produces,

Then I give one-third of it in charity,

My family and I eat one-third,
1:22
And I reinvest one-third back into it."
