0:00 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. The story of Mary, daughter of Imran, peace be upon her.

0:13 Mary's submission to Allah's command.

0:19 Indeed, the reality of a woman's Islam is manifested in the extent of her submission to Allah's command.

0:26 And this is the criterion of faith for all people.

0:30 And this is one of the greatest issues around which the meanings of the verses and stories in Surah Al-Baqarah revolve.

0:37 And our Lord, Glorified and Exalted is He, praised His prophet and intimate friend Ibrahim, peace be upon him, for his submission to Him.

0:47 He said:

0:48 “And who forsaketh the religion of Abraham save him who befooleth himself? Verily We chose him in the world, and lo! in the Hereafter he is among the righteous.” (2:130)

0:57 “And who forsaketh the religion of Abraham save him who befooleth himself? Verily We chose him in the world, and lo! in the Hereafter he is among the righteous.” (2:130)

1:07 “When his Lord said unto him: Surrender! he said: I have surrendered to the Lord of the Worlds.” (2:131)

1:16 Al-Sa'di, may Allah have mercy on him, said that when his Lord said to him, "Submit," he said, "I have submitted to the Lord of the worlds in obedience to my Lord's command."

1:27 With sincerity, monotheism, love, and repentance.

1:32 And a woman's faith increases or decreases according to her submission to Allah's command and His law.

1:38 Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Islam entails submission to Allah alone.

1:46 So whoever submits to Him and to others is a polytheist.

1:50 And whoever does not submit to Him is arrogant in His worship.

1:55 The polytheist with Him and the arrogant in His worship are disbelievers.

2:00 And submission to Him alone entails worshipping Him alone and obeying Him alone.

2:07 This is the religion of Islam, which Allah accepts no other.

2:12 And that is only by being obeyed at all times.

2:16 By doing what He commanded at that time.

2:20 And this summary, which Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, mentioned,

2:25 summarizes the issue of submission for you.

2:28 It is that you obey Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, at all times.

2:32 By doing what He commanded you to do at that time.

2:36 And when you look at the story of Mary,

2:39 and what Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, commanded her and decreed for her,

2:43 of conceiving Jesus, and she was the chaste, virgin one,

2:47 no man had touched her.

2:49 She did not object after she was told that this was Allah's command, the Mighty and Majestic.

2:54 And therefore, Allah, the Most High, said about her:

2:58 “And she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a far place.” (19:22)

3:03 Ibn Kathir, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

3:06 The Most High says, informing about Mary,

3:09 that when Gabriel told her what Allah, the Most High, said,

3:14 she submitted to Allah's decree, the Most High.

3:18 And Mary, peace be upon her, before the good news of Jesus came to her,

3:23 was devoted to the worship of Allah in the House of Jerusalem,

3:27 distant from people,

3:30 having set up a screen from them.

3:33 So the trial of pregnancy came to her.

3:35 And she succeeded in it.

3:37 So her status rose with Allah, the Mighty and Majestic,

3:41 until He made her a sign for all worlds.

3:44 The Most High said:

3:46 And she who guarded her chastity,

3:49 “And she who was chaste, therefor We breathed into her (something) of Our Spirit and made her and her son a token for (all) peoples.” (21:91)

3:51 “And she who was chaste, therefor We breathed into her (something) of Our Spirit and made her and her son a token for (all) peoples.” (21:91)

3:56 And He said:

3:57 “And We made the son of Mary and his mother a portent, and We gave them refuge on a height, a place of flocks and watersprings.” (23:50)

4:01 “And We made the son of Mary and his mother a portent, and We gave them refuge on a height, a place of flocks and watersprings.” (23:50)

4:06 And Allah's testing of His servants is a past Sunnah that does not change or alter.

4:13 Even the prophets,

4:15 Allah tests them with the most severe types of trials.

4:18 All of that is to reveal the extent of their submission to Allah's command and His law and their steadfastness upon it.

4:25 The Most High said:

4:27 “Do men imagine that they will be left (at ease) because they say, We believe, and will not be tested with affliction?” (29:2)

4:39 “Lo! We tested those who were before you. Thus Allah knoweth those who are sincere, and knoweth those who feign.” (29:3)

4:44 Allah will make known to us those who are truthful and make known to us the liars.

4:54 Ibn Kathir, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

4:57 The Almighty's saying:

4:59 “Do men imagine that they will be left (at ease) because they say, We believe, and will not be tested with affliction?” (29:2)

5:06 An interrogative of denial.

5:08 And its meaning is that Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, must test His believing servants

5:14 according to the level of faith they possess.

5:17 As is mentioned in the authentic hadith:

5:20 The people most severely tested are the Prophets,

5:23 then the righteous,

5:25 then the best of the best.

5:28 A person is tested according to his religion.

5:30 If he is firm in his religion,

5:33 his trials are increased.

5:36 And Mary, peace be upon her, was among the righteous.

5:39 And due to the intensity of her faith,

5:41 Allah tested her with a great matter,

5:44 which was pregnancy without marital intimacy.

5:47 So how would she face her people, she who was known only for her worship and devotion to it?

5:54 And this is the trial by which Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, purifies His servants according to their faith,

6:01 so that He may see the extent of their submission to His command and His law, and the extent of their steadfastness upon it.

6:07 And this trial,

6:09 its purpose is to distinguish the truthful from the liar in claiming faith.

6:14 Al-Sa'di, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

6:17 The Almighty informs about the completeness of His wisdom,

6:20 and that His wisdom does not necessitate that everyone who claims to be a believer

6:25 and professes faith for themselves

6:28 should remain in a state where they are safe from trials and tribulations,

6:33 and nothing that disturbs their faith and its branches comes their way.

6:38 For if that were the case,

6:41 the truthful would not be distinguished from the liar,

6:44 and the truthful from the false.

6:46 But His Sunnah and His custom with the previous generations and with this Ummah

6:51 is to test them.

6:54 And from Allah's mercy upon His servants

6:56 is that He aids the truthful in what He tests them with,

7:01 as happened in the story of Mary.

7:03 Allah aided her in facing her people with clear signs,

7:09 such as Jesus speaking while an infant,

7:11 and his speech in the cradle.

7:14 Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

7:17 But Allah is kind to His believing servants during these trials,

7:22 and grants them patience through them and rewards them for them.

7:26 And He does not cast them into a destructive, misleading trial that would take away their religion.

7:32 Rather, the trials pass over them while they are in well-being from them.

7:37 Indeed, claiming faith is an easy matter,

7:40 because it is mere words.

7:42 But the reality of faith is manifested in the extent of commitment

7:46 and practical action required of Muslim men and women.

7:49 And for this reason, Allah rebuked the Bedouins,

7:53 as stated in His exalted saying:

7:56 "The Bedouins say, 'We have believed.'"

8:00 “The wandering Arabs say: We believe. Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Ye believe not, but rather say "We submit," for the faith hath not yet entered into your hearts. Yet, if ye obey Allah and His messenger, He will not withhold from you aught of (the reward of) your deeds. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (49:14)

8:06 “The wandering Arabs say: We believe. Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Ye believe not, but rather say "We submit," for the faith hath not yet entered into your hearts. Yet, if ye obey Allah and His messenger, He will not withhold from you aught of (the reward of) your deeds. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (49:14)

8:21 Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

8:26 The believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger,

8:33 and then they doubt not,

8:40 but strive with their wealth and their lives in the cause of Allah.

8:47 Those are the truthful.

8:52 “Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Would ye teach Allah your religion, when Allah knoweth all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, and Allah is Aware of all things?” (49:16)

8:56 “Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Would ye teach Allah your religion, when Allah knoweth all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, and Allah is Aware of all things?” (49:16)

9:01 And Allah is knowing of all things.

9:32 and His prohibition of you being alone with a man who is not your mahram,

9:36 and mixing in workplaces,

9:39 and His prohibition of you going out perfumed,

9:42 and His command to you to obey your husband,

9:44 and His creation of you as female, differing from the male,

9:48 all of this and other matters are from Allah's law and command.

9:52 It requires from you absolute submission without argument.

9:57 Because Allah does not command you to do something or forbid you from something,

10:02 except that it contains your welfare in this world and the Hereafter.

10:06 It is not enough for you to say, "It is correct, and I have believed,"

10:10 and then not submit to it and not implement it.

10:14 It is not enough for you to say that you love Allah and His Messenger,

10:18 and then not obey the command of Allah and His Messenger in the reality of your life,

10:24 or that you argue about the command of Allah and His Messenger when it contradicts your desires,

10:30 and contradicts the reality of societies,

10:33 out of fear of societal pressure upon you,

10:36 and their disapproval of you or their mockery of you.

10:40 All of this is contrary to submission to the command of Allah and His law.

10:45 And look at the state of the Jews,

10:47 when they opposed Allah's command with much argumentation,

10:51 what befell them in terms of severity upon them in this world.

10:55 Allah the Almighty said:

10:57 "And when Moses said to his people,

11:01 “And when Moses said unto his people: Lo! Allah commandeth you that ye sacrifice a cow, they said: Dost thou make game of us? He answered: Allah forbid that I should be among the foolish!” (2:67)

11:07 'Do you take us in ridicule?'"

11:12 “And when Moses said unto his people: Lo! Allah commandeth you that ye sacrifice a cow, they said: Dost thou make game of us? He answered: Allah forbid that I should be among the foolish!” (2:67)

11:18 "Call upon your Lord for us that He may make clear to us what it is."

11:23 “They said: Pray for us unto thy Lord that He make clear to us what (cow) she is. (Moses) answered: Lo! He saith, Verily she is a cow neither with calf nor immature; (she is) between the two conditions; so do that which ye are commanded.” (2:68)

11:34 "So do what you are commanded."

11:37 "Call upon your Lord for us that He may make clear to us its color."

11:42 “They said: Pray for us unto thy Lord that He make clear to us of what colour she is. (Moses) answered: Lo! He saith: Verily she is a yellow cow. Bright is her colour, gladdening beholders.” (2:69)

11:49 "It is a yellow cow, bright in its color, pleasing to the observers."

11:54 "Call upon your Lord for us that He may make clear to us what it is."

11:59 "Indeed, the cows have become similar to us."

12:07 “They said: Pray for us unto thy Lord that He make clear to us what (cow) she is. Lo! cows are much alike to us; and Lo! if Allah wills, we may be led aright.” (2:70)

12:14 “(Moses) answered: Lo! He saith: Verily she is a cow unyoked; she plougheth not the soil nor watereth the tilth; whole and without mark. They said: Now thou bringest the truth. So they sacrificed her, though almost they did not.” (2:71)

12:21 "And not to water the crops, a tame cow, unblemished with any [defect]."

12:27 “(Moses) answered: Lo! He saith: Verily she is a cow unyoked; she plougheth not the soil nor watereth the tilth; whole and without mark. They said: Now thou bringest the truth. So they sacrificed her, though almost they did not.” (2:71)

12:30 “(Moses) answered: Lo! He saith: Verily she is a cow unyoked; she plougheth not the soil nor watereth the tilth; whole and without mark. They said: Now thou bringest the truth. So they sacrificed her, though almost they did not.” (2:71)

12:34 “And (remember) when ye slew a man and disagreed concerning it and Allah brought forth that which ye were hiding.” (2:72)

12:46 "So say, 'Strike it with part of it.' Thus Allah brings the dead to life."

12:52 “And We said: Smite him with some of it. Thus Allah bringeth the dead to life and showeth you His portents so that ye may understand.” (2:73)

12:58 And He, the Exalted, said about them:

13:01 "And when Moses said to his people,

13:04 “And (remember) when Moses said unto his people: O my people! Remember Allah's favour unto you, how He placed among you prophets, and He made you kings, and gave you that (which) He gave not to any (other) of (His) creatures.” (5:20)

13:08 “And (remember) when Moses said unto his people: O my people! Remember Allah's favour unto you, how He placed among you prophets, and He made you kings, and gave you that (which) He gave not to any (other) of (His) creatures.” (5:20)

13:15 'And He has made you kings

13:18 and made you kings

13:21 and given you what He had not given anyone among the worlds.'"

13:27 "'O my people, enter the holy land

13:30 “O my people! Go into the holy land which Allah hath ordained for you. Turn not in flight, for surely ye turn back as losers:” (5:21)

13:33 “O my people! Go into the holy land which Allah hath ordained for you. Turn not in flight, for surely ye turn back as losers:” (5:21)

13:39 and you will turn back as losers.'"

13:43 “They said: O Moses! Lo! a giant people (dwell) therein and lo! we go not in till they go forth from thence. When they go forth from thence, then we will enter (not till then).” (5:22)

13:51 And indeed, we will not enter it

13:58 until they leave it.

14:01 So if they leave it,

14:03 then indeed, we will enter.

14:06 “Then out spake two of those who feared (their Lord, men) unto whom Allah had been gracious: Enter in upon them by the gate, for if ye enter by it, lo! ye will be victorious. So put your trust (in Allah) if ye are indeed believers.” (5:23)

14:10 Allah bestowed His favor upon them.

14:12 They entered upon them through the gate.

14:16 “Then out spake two of those who feared (their Lord, men) unto whom Allah had been gracious: Enter in upon them by the gate, for if ye enter by it, lo! ye will be victorious. So put your trust (in Allah) if ye are indeed believers.” (5:23)

14:21 And upon Allah, rely,

14:25 if you are believers.

14:29 They said, "O Moses, indeed we will not enter it

14:36 ever as long as they are in it.

14:40 So go, you and your Lord,

14:42 and fight. Indeed, we are remaining right here."

14:48 “He said: My Lord! I have control of none but myself and my brother, so distinguish between us and the wrong-doing folk.” (5:25)

14:55 So make a separation between us and the wicked people.

15:00 “(Their Lord) said: For this the land will surely be forbidden them for forty years that they will wander in the earth, bewildered. So grieve not over the wrongdoing folk.” (5:26)

15:04 Forty years they will wander in the land.

15:09 So do not grieve over the wicked people.

15:14 and the refusal to submit to the command of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and His law

15:18 and arguing against it.

15:20 stems from the arrogance that dominates the heart.

15:23 And this is one of the most dangerous types of arrogance:

15:26 that a Muslim woman becomes arrogant towards Allah, the Mighty and Majestic,

15:30 and rejects His law with her intellect and desires.

15:34 Allah the Almighty says:

15:36 Those who dispute concerning the signs of Allah

15:41 without an authority having come to them.

15:45 “Those who wrangle concerning the revelations of Allah without any warrant that hath come unto them, it is greatly hateful in the sight of Allah and in the sight of those who believe. Thus doth Allah print on every arrogant, disdainful heart.” (40:35)

15:51 “Those who wrangle concerning the revelations of Allah without any warrant that hath come unto them, it is greatly hateful in the sight of Allah and in the sight of those who believe. Thus doth Allah print on every arrogant, disdainful heart.” (40:35)

15:59 And Allah the Almighty says:

16:02 “Lo! those who wrangle concerning the revelations of Allah without a warrant having come unto them, there is naught else in their breasts save pride which they will never attain. So take thou refuge in Allah. Lo! He, only He, is the Hearer, the Seer.” (40:56)

16:10 without an authority having come to them.

16:13 without an authority having come to them.

16:16 “Lo! those who wrangle concerning the revelations of Allah without a warrant having come unto them, there is naught else in their breasts save pride which they will never attain. So take thou refuge in Allah. Lo! He, only He, is the Hearer, the Seer.” (40:56)

16:19 They will not attain it.

16:23 So seek refuge in Allah.

16:26 Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.

16:31 So, O you who loved Mary, peace be upon her,

16:35 and followed her example,

16:36 beware lest the people of desires lead you astray

16:39 to reject the law of Allah and argue against it

16:43 with any of the flimsy arguments.

16:46 And adhere to the path of the righteous women, the Mothers of the Believers and the female Companions,

16:52 and those who followed their path among the righteous women throughout the great history of this Ummah.

17:00 We will continue in a future meeting, Allah willing.

17:03 And praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
