0:33 All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds,

0:36 And may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad,

0:39 And upon his family and all his Companions.

0:43 To proceed: in this final chapter of the story of the Prophet of Allah, Moses (peace be upon him),

0:49 With his people, the Children of Israel,

0:52 We review some of the events that Allah has recounted to us of their news in His Mighty Book.

0:58 Among those events

1:00 Is the journey of Moses with al-Khidr (peace be upon them both).

1:04 It is established in the Prophetic Sunnah

1:07 That Moses (peace be upon him) stood to deliver a sermon among the Children of Israel,

1:12 And he delivered an eloquent sermon

1:14 From which eyes shed tears

1:16 And hearts were humbled.

1:19 Then a man stood up and asked Moses (peace be upon him),

1:23 "Which of mankind is most knowledgeable?"

1:25 Moses replied, "I am."

1:28 So Allah reproached him,

1:30 Because he did not attribute knowledge to Him.

1:32 Allah said to him,

1:34 "I have a servant at the junction of the two seas

1:36 Who is more knowledgeable than you."

1:38 Moses said,

1:40 "O my Lord, how can I reach him?"

1:42 Allah said,

1:44 "You shall take a fish—

1:46 A fish from the sea—

1:48 And place the fish in a basket.

1:50 Wherever you lose the fish,

1:52 You will find him there."

1:54 Moses (peace be upon him) took a fish

1:59 And placed it in a basket,

2:01 Then he set out with his young companion, Joshua son of Nun,

2:05 On their journey in pursuit of knowledge.

2:08 They would eat from that fish

2:11 And take provision from it on their journey.

2:14 When they reached a rock along their path,

2:18 Moses (peace be upon him) wished

2:20 To stop by it to rest,

2:23 So they laid down their heads,

2:25 And Moses (peace be upon him) fell asleep.

2:28 At the base of the rock was a spring called the Spring of Life;

2:32 Whatever its water touches

2:35 Inevitably comes back to life.

2:37 Some of the water from that spring touched the fish,

2:40 So it stirred and moved,

2:42 Slipped out of the basket,

2:44 And made its way into the sea.

2:46 Allah held back the flow of water from the fish,

2:49 So it became like an archway over it,

2:52 That is, like a track traced through the earth.

2:55 Moses (peace be upon him) awoke,

2:58 And Joshua forgot to inform him about the fish,

3:02 So they continued walking for the rest of their night and day.

3:06 When the next day came,

3:09 Fatigue and hunger overtook Moses.

3:12 Moses had felt no exhaustion

3:14 Until he passed the place Allah had commanded him to reach.

3:18 He asked his young companion, Joshua, to bring him food,

3:22 Whereupon Joshua informed him that he had forgotten the fish

3:25 Back at that rock,

3:27 And that Satan had caused him to forget to mention it to him at the time.

3:32 The fish had taken its course into the sea amazingly:

3:36 Its path in the sea was a burrow for the fish,

3:40 And a source of wonder for Moses and his young companion.

3:43 Moses (peace be upon him) said,

3:46 "That is what we were seeking on this journey of ours."

3:50 So they retraced their footsteps,

3:53 Until they reached the rock,

3:56 And there was a man covered with a garment,

3:59 Called al-Khidr (peace be upon him).

4:02 Moses greeted him with peace, and he returned the greeting,

4:05 Saying, "How can there be peace in your land?"

4:09 He said, "I am Moses."

4:12 He asked, "Moses of the Children of Israel?"

4:15 He replied, "Yes,

4:17 I have come to you so that you may teach me from what Allah has taught you."

4:21 Al-Khidr (peace be upon him) said,

4:23 "O Moses,

4:25 I have knowledge from the knowledge of Allah

4:28 Which Allah has taught me and you do not know,

4:31 And you have knowledge from the knowledge of Allah

4:34 Which Allah has taught you and I do not know."

4:37 Moses said to al-Khidr,

4:39 "May I follow you so that you teach me from what Allah has taught you?"

4:44 Al-Khidr answered him,

4:47 "You will not have the patience to accompany me and learn from me."

4:51 Moses said,

4:53 “He said: Allah willing, thou shalt find me patient and I shall not in aught gainsay thee.” (18:69)

4:56 “He said: Allah willing, thou shalt find me patient and I shall not in aught gainsay thee.” (18:69)

4:59 So al-Khidr (peace be upon him) agreed,

5:02 And set a condition for Moses, saying,

5:05 "If you follow me,

5:07 “He said: Well, if thou go with me, ask me not concerning aught till I myself make mention of it unto thee.” (18:70)

5:09 Until I myself mention it to you."

5:12 Allah Almighty said:

5:15 ❝And [mention] when Moses said to his servant, 'I will not cease until I reach the junction of the two seas,

5:22 Or continue for a long period.'❞

5:24 ❝So when they reached the junction between them,

5:28 They forgot their fish,❞

5:32 “And when they reached the point where the two met, they forgot their fish, and it took its way into the waters, being free.” (18:61)

5:36 “And when they had gone further, he said unto his servant: Bring us our breakfast. Verily we have found fatigue in this our journey.” (18:62)

5:40 ❝'Bring us our morning meal;'❞

5:51 “He said: Didst thou see, when we took refuge on the rock, and I forgot the fish - and none but Satan caused me to forget to mention it - it took its way into the waters by a marvel.” (18:63)

6:11 “He said: This is that which we have been seeking. So they retraced their steps again.” (18:64)

6:16 ❝So they returned, following their footprints.❞

6:20 “Then found they one of Our slaves, unto whom We had given mercy from Us, and had taught him knowledge from Our presence.” (18:65)

6:39 “Moses said unto him: May I follow thee, to the end that thou mayst teach me right conduct of that which thou hast been taught?” (18:66)

6:47 “He said: Lo! thou canst not bear with me.” (18:67)

6:53 “How canst thou bear with that whereof thou canst not compass any knowledge?” (18:68)

6:58 “He said: Allah willing, thou shalt find me patient and I shall not in aught gainsay thee.” (18:69)

7:08 “He said: Well, if thou go with me, ask me not concerning aught till I myself make mention of it unto thee.” (18:70)

7:17 And so began the extraordinary and wondrous journey,

7:23 And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, recounts to us what took place in it:

7:27 Three perplexing incidents

7:30 Regarding which Moses (peace be upon him) could not suppress his astonishment,

7:35 Nor could he keep his pledge to al-Khidr not to question him about anything that occurred while accompanying him.

7:43 Moses and al-Khidr set out, walking along the seashore,

7:48 When a ship passed by them,

7:51 So the crew offered to carry them aboard.

7:54 They recognized the righteous servant, al-Khidr,

7:57 So they carried the two of them without any fare.

8:00 When they boarded the ship,

8:02 A sparrow came and perched on the edge of the ship,

8:06 And dipped its beak once or twice into the sea.

8:10 Al-Khidr said,

8:12 "O Moses, my knowledge and your knowledge have not diminished the knowledge of Allah

8:17 Any more than this sparrow has diminished the sea with its beak."

8:22 Then al-Khidr took an adze

8:25 And pulled out a plank from the ship.

8:28 Moses said to him,

8:30 "What have you done?

8:32 A people carried us without fare,

8:34 Yet you deliberately damaged their ship by scuttling it,

8:37 So as to drown its passengers!

8:39 Truly, this is a dreadful thing."

8:42 Al-Khidr said,

8:44 "Did I not tell you, O Moses,

8:46 That you would not be able to bear with me and learn from me?"

8:50 Moses apologized to him

8:52 And explained that he had forgotten what he had promised him

8:56 Before they set out together.

8:58 So al-Khidr excused him,

9:00 And they continued their journey.

9:02 When they came ashore from the sea,

9:06 They passed by a boy playing with other children,

9:09 So al-Khidr took him by the head and severed it with his hand,

9:13 Killing him.

9:14 Moses (peace be upon him) denounced him

9:17 And objected to him, saying,

9:19 "How could you kill a soul that has committed no crime?"

9:23 Al-Khidr replied to him,

9:25 "I told you at the very beginning

9:28 That you would not be able to bear with me and learn from me."

9:32 Thereupon Moses apologized to him a second time

9:35 And promised that he would not repeat his objection again,

9:40 And that if he were to object once more,

9:42 Al-Khidr would be fully justified in parting from him.

9:45 So al-Khidr (peace be upon him) agreed.

9:48 Then Moses and al-Khidr continued on their way

9:53 And passed by a town.

9:55 Severe hunger had taken a heavy toll on both of them,

9:59 So they asked the people of the town for hospitality,

10:02 But they refused to offer them any food.

10:06 Meanwhile,

10:08 Al-Khidr (peace be upon him) saw a wall leaning and on the verge of collapsing,

10:13 So he set about repairing it and supporting it with buttresses

10:17 To prevent it from falling.

10:19 Al-Khidr did not ask the people of the town for any wage for his work.

10:25 Moses (peace be upon him) was astonished at this action:

10:29 How could al-Khidr do this,

10:32 When the people had not offered them anything to stave off the pangs of hunger?

10:38 He turned to al-Khidr and addressed him, saying,

10:42 "A people we came to neither fed us nor hosted us,

10:47 Yet you went ahead and rebuilt their wall!

10:50 Would it not have been fitting for you to ask for a wage for this work of yours,

10:55 Or at least ask for food in return for what you did?"

11:01 Al-Khidr said to Moses,

11:04 "The time has now come for us to part ways after all that has happened.

11:09 Events and circumstances have proven

11:12 That you are unable to bear with me and stay by my side.

11:17 Nonetheless,

11:19 I will inform you of the reality behind what I did."

11:22 Allah Almighty said:

11:26 ❝So they set out, until when they had embarked on the ship, he damaged it.❞

11:32 “So they twain set out till, when they were in the ship, he made a hole therein. (Moses) said: Hast thou made a hole therein to drown the folk thereof? Thou verily hast done a dreadful thing.” (18:71)

11:39 ❝He said, 'Did I not say that with me you would never be able to have patience?'❞

11:46 “(Moses) said: Be not wroth with me that I forgot, and be not hard upon me for my fault.” (18:73)

11:53 ❝So they set out, until when they met a boy, he killed him.❞

12:00 “So they twain journeyed on till, when they met a lad, he slew him. (Moses) said: What! Hast thou slain an innocent soul who hath slain no man? Verily thou hast done a horrid thing.” (18:74)

12:13 “He said: Did I not tell thee that thou couldst not bear with me?” (18:75)

12:20 “(Moses) said: If I ask thee after this concerning aught, keep not company with me. Thou hast received an excuse from me.” (18:76)

12:28 “(Moses) said: If I ask thee after this concerning aught, keep not company with me. Thou hast received an excuse from me.” (18:76)

12:33 ❝So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality.❞

12:47 “So they twain journeyed on till, when they came unto the folk of a certain township, they asked its folk for food, but they refused to make them guests. And they found therein a wall upon the point of falling into ruin, and he repaired it. (Moses) said: If thou hadst wished, thou couldst have taken payment for it.” (18:77)

12:58 “He said: This is the parting between thee and me! I will announce unto thee the interpretation of that thou couldst not bear with patience.” (18:78)

13:08 Al-Khidr began recounting to Moses the wisdom and lessons behind everything he had done.

13:15 He informed him that the ship belonged to poor people who earned their living by it,

13:22 And ahead of them on their route was a tyrannical king

13:26 Who seized every sound, undamaged ship while leaving any ship that had a defect or damage.

13:35 "So I intended to damage it and cause a defect in it to prevent those pirates from seizing and confiscating it.

13:44 As for the boy, his parents were believers, while in Allah's foreknowledge he was a disbeliever,

13:51 And it was feared that he would bring harm upon them, so I killed him to prevent him from leading his parents astray and turning them away from their faith in Allah;

14:01 For parental affection may sometimes lead to praiseworthy outcomes being abandoned,

14:08 And it might drive a believer to forsake his faith if dragged along by such emotion.

14:14 And we intended that Allah should substitute for his parents a child better than him in purity

14:19 And closer in affection and mercy.

14:22 As for restoring the wall that was about to collapse, beneath it was a buried treasure belonging to two orphan boys;

14:31 Had the wall fallen before the two boys reached maturity, that treasure would have been lost to them,

14:38 For they had no ability to defend their rights.

14:42 Thus, the purpose of rebuilding it was to safeguard the right of these two orphan boys to this wealth,

14:49 In honor of their righteous father." Allah Almighty said:

14:54 “As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working on the river, and I wished to mar it, for there was a king behind them who is taking every ship by force.” (18:79)

15:06 “As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working on the river, and I wished to mar it, for there was a king behind them who is taking every ship by force.” (18:79)

15:14 “And as for the lad, his parents were believers and we feared lest he should oppress them by rebellion and disbelief.” (18:80)

15:24 “And we intended that their Lord should change him for them for one better in purity and nearer to mercy.” (18:81)

15:34 “And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure belonging to them, and their father had been righteous, and thy Lord intended that they should come to their full strength and should bring forth their treasure as a mercy from their Lord; and I did it not upon my own command. Such is the interpretation of that wherewith thou couldst not bear.” (18:82)

16:07 ❝That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience.❞

16:12 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "We wish that Moses had shown patience,

16:20 so that Allah would have related to us more of their story" — agreed upon.

16:26 The Prophet of Allah and His conversationalist, Moses (peace be upon him), was not spared the harm of the Children of Israel

16:34 and their audacity toward him, which stemmed from their terrible insolence toward their prophets.

16:39 In fact, it even reached the point of them killing some of them; and Allah's help is sought.

16:45 It is recorded in Sahih Muslim that the Children of Israel used to bathe naked,

16:51 looking at one another's private parts,

16:54 while Moses (peace be upon him) used to bathe alone.

16:58 So they said, "By Allah, nothing prevents Moses from bathing with us

17:03 except that he has a scrotal hernia," meaning enlarged testicles.

17:08 One day, Moses (peace be upon him) went to bathe,

17:12 and placed his garment on a stone, but the stone ran away with his garment.

17:17 So Moses ran after it, saying,

17:21 "My garment, O stone! My garment, O stone!"

17:25 until the Children of Israel saw the naked body of Moses

17:29 and said, "By Allah, there is no defect in Moses."

17:33 The stone then stopped, so Moses took his garment,

17:38 and began striking the stone repeatedly.

17:41 Regarding this, Allah Almighty says:

17:46 “O ye who believe! Be not as those who slandered Moses, but Allah proved his innocence of that which they alleged, and he was well esteemed in Allah's sight.” (33:69)

18:01 “O ye who believe! Be not as those who slandered Moses, but Allah proved his innocence of that which they alleged, and he was well esteemed in Allah's sight.” (33:69)

18:08 During these years of wandering, the Prophet of Allah, Aaron (peace be upon him), passed away.

18:15 Then, three years after him, the Angel of Death came in the form of a man

18:21 to take the soul of the Prophet of Allah, Moses (peace be upon him).

18:25 When he came, Moses did not recognize him,

18:29 so he struck him and gouged out his eye.

18:32 The Angel of Death returned and said,

18:35 "O my Lord, You sent me to a servant who does not want to die."

18:39 Allah said, "Go back to him

18:42 and tell him to place his hand on the back of an ox,

18:46 and for every hair his hand covers, he will have one year of life."

18:50 The Angel of Death came to him and informed him,

18:54 so Moses asked him, "Then what happens after that?"

18:58 He replied, "Death." Moses said,

19:02 "Then let it be now." So he took his soul.

19:06 And Moses (peace be upon him) asked his Lord

19:10 to bring him close to the Holy Land

19:13 by the distance of a stone's throw.

19:15 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,

19:19 "If I were there,

19:22 I would show you his grave by the side of the road,

19:26 at the red dune."

19:28 And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,

19:32 "When I was taken on the Night Journey, I passed by Moses

19:36 standing in prayer in his grave,

19:39 near the red dune."

19:42 When the forty years came to an end,

19:45 which Allah had decreed for the Children of Israel to wander in the wilderness,

19:49 and the first generation had died out—

19:51 that which had been raised upon humiliation and disgrace—

19:54 and a new generation arose,

19:56 Allah sent to them the young companion of Moses,

19:59 who was Joshua son of Nun.

20:01 He called upon the Children of Israel,

20:03 informing them that he was a prophet

20:06 and that Allah had commanded him to fight the tyrants.

20:10 So they pledged allegiance to him and believed him,

20:12 and he set out with them toward the Blessed Land.

20:16 When the people of Bayt al-Maqdis learned of them,

20:19 they went to a man among them called

20:22 Balaam son of Beor,

20:24 whose supplications were always answered

20:26 and who possessed the Greatest Name of Allah.

20:29 They said to him,

20:31 "Joshua is a formidable man,

20:33 he has a large army with him,

20:35 and he has come to drive us out of our land

20:38 and settle the Children of Israel in it.

20:41 You are a man whose supplication is answered,

20:44 so pray to Allah to turn them away from us."

20:47 He said,

20:49 "Woe to you! He is the Prophet of Allah,

20:51 and the believers are with him!

20:53 How can I pray against them

20:55 when I know concerning Allah what I know?

20:58 If I were to do this,

21:00 my worldly life and my Hereafter would be ruined."

21:03 But they kept coming back to him and pleading persistently,

21:07 offering him worldly wealth

21:09 until they persuaded him.

21:11 So he prayed against them,

21:13 but his supplication rebounded upon his own people,

21:15 and he lost both this worldly life and the Hereafter.

21:18 His state became like that of a dog

21:21 that pants in either case:

21:24 whether you drive it away or leave it alone.

21:27 When Balaam saw that wretchedness had been decreed for him,

21:31 he said to his people,

21:33 "I will direct you to something

21:35 that may bring about their destruction.

21:38 Indeed, Allah hates fornication,

21:41 and if they fall into fornication, they will perish.

21:44 Send out the women to receive them,

21:47 for they are traveling men;

21:50 perhaps they will commit fornication and thus be destroyed."

21:53 So they did so and sent the women out to them,

21:57 and the Children of Israel fell into fornication.

22:00 And the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

22:04 "Beware of the world and beware of women,

22:08 for the first tribulation of the Children of Israel

22:11 was regarding women."

22:14 Allah Almighty said:

22:16 “Recite unto them the tale of him to whom We gave Our revelations, but he sloughed them off, so Satan overtook him and he became of those who lead astray.” (7:175)

22:22 "but he detached himself from them,

22:25 so he detached himself from them,

22:28 so Satan pursued him,

22:30 and he became of those who were led astray.

22:33 “And had We willed We could have raised him by their means, but he clung to the earth and followed his own lust. Therefor his likeness is as the likeness of a dog: if thou attackest him he panteth with his tongue out, and if thou leavest him he panteth with his tongue out. Such is the likeness of the people who deny Our revelations. Narrate unto them the history (of the men of old), that haply they may take thought.” (7:176)

22:36 “And had We willed We could have raised him by their means, but he clung to the earth and followed his own lust. Therefor his likeness is as the likeness of a dog: if thou attackest him he panteth with his tongue out, and if thou leavest him he panteth with his tongue out. Such is the likeness of the people who deny Our revelations. Narrate unto them the history (of the men of old), that haply they may take thought.” (7:176)

22:44 and followed his own desires.

22:47 So his example is like that of a dog:

22:50 “And had We willed We could have raised him by their means, but he clung to the earth and followed his own lust. Therefor his likeness is as the likeness of a dog: if thou attackest him he panteth with his tongue out, and if thou leavest him he panteth with his tongue out. Such is the likeness of the people who deny Our revelations. Narrate unto them the history (of the men of old), that haply they may take thought.” (7:176)

22:53 or you leave it, it pants.

22:55 “And had We willed We could have raised him by their means, but he clung to the earth and followed his own lust. Therefor his likeness is as the likeness of a dog: if thou attackest him he panteth with his tongue out, and if thou leavest him he panteth with his tongue out. Such is the likeness of the people who deny Our revelations. Narrate unto them the history (of the men of old), that haply they may take thought.” (7:176)

23:01 So relate the stories that perhaps they may reflect."

23:07 None remained steadfast with Joshua (peace be upon him)

23:12 except a portion of the Children of Israel.

23:15 He entered Bayt al-Maqdis with them,

23:17 and Allah granted him conquest

23:19 and decreed for him victory over the tyrannical people.

23:23 Then Allah commanded them to enter the city prostrating,

23:27 meaning bowing down in humility before Allah upon entering,

23:33 and to say, "Hittah,"

23:35 meaning, "Relieve us of our sins."

23:38 But they altered Allah's command to them in word and in deed:

23:42 they entered crawling on their backsides with their heads raised,

23:47 instead of entering prostrating,

23:50 and instead of saying "Hittah,"

23:53 they mocked and said, "A grain of wheat in a barley hair."

23:58 This was the utmost degree of defiance and stubbornness,

24:03 so Allah sent down His wrath and punishment upon them

24:06 because of their defiance and disobedience to Him;

24:10 and that is the recompense of the wrongdoers.

24:13 Allah Almighty said:

24:15 "And [remember] when We said, 'Enter this city

24:20 “And when We said: Go into this township and eat freely of that which is therein, and enter the gate prostrate, and say: "Repentance." We will forgive you your sins and will increase (reward) for the right-doers.” (2:58)

24:28 and enter the gate prostrating,

24:31 and say, "Relieve us of our sins,"

24:34 “And when We said: Go into this township and eat freely of that which is therein, and enter the gate prostrate, and say: "Repentance." We will forgive you your sins and will increase (reward) for the right-doers.” (2:58)

24:39 and We will increase the doers of good.'"

24:43 “But those who did wrong changed the word which had been told them for another saying, and We sent down upon the evil-doers wrath from heaven for their evil-doing.” (2:59)

24:49 “But those who did wrong changed the word which had been told them for another saying, and We sent down upon the evil-doers wrath from heaven for their evil-doing.” (2:59)

25:04 O noble brothers,

25:08 indeed the Prophet of Allah, Moses (peace be upon him),

25:11 is among the most frequently mentioned prophets in the Qur'an,

25:14 and his story appears in numerous surahs of the Book of Allah.

25:19 For Allah mentioned Moses (peace be upon him) in the Qur'an

25:23 one hundred and thirty-six times,

25:26 and his story contains many lessons and morals;

25:30 we suffice with what has been mentioned during this narrative.

25:34 The age of Moses (peace be upon him) at the time of his death was

25:38 one hundred and twenty years.

25:40 It is related that Joshua (peace be upon him) saw him in a dream after his death

25:45 and said to him,

25:47 "How did you find death?"

25:49 He replied,

25:50 "Like a sheep being skinned while still alive."

25:54 This is the true meaning of the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him):

25:59 "Indeed, death has agonies."
