0:13 Upon the best of all creation,

0:17 Men of steadfast resolve, whose standing is lofty.

0:24 The story of Jesus, peace be upon him.

0:31 In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

0:35 All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds,

0:38 And may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad,

0:41 And upon his family and all his Companions.

0:45 To proceed: Allah the Exalted said:

0:50 "Indeed, Allah chose Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham,

0:59 “Lo! Allah preferred Adam and Noah and the Family of Abraham and the Family of 'Imran above (all His) creatures.” (3:33)

1:05 Descendants, one of another.

1:11 And Allah is Hearing and Knowing."

1:15 Ibn Kathir said:

1:18 "The Almighty informs that He chose these households over all the people of the earth.

1:23 He chose Adam, peace be upon him:

1:26 He created him with His own Hand, breathed into him of His spirit,

1:30 Made the angels prostrate to him,

1:32 Taught him the names of all things,

1:35 Settled him in Paradise,

1:37 And then brought him down from it

1:39 For the divine wisdom He willed therein.

1:42 He also chose Noah, peace be upon him,

1:45 Making him the first messenger sent to the people of the earth

1:48 When mankind worshipped idols

1:51 And associated partners in Allah's religion without any authority revealed by Him.

1:56 And He took vengeance for him after his long stay among his people,

2:01 Calling them to Allah night and day,

2:04 In secret and openly,

2:06 But it only increased them in aversion.

2:09 So he prayed against them,

2:11 And Allah drowned them to the very last one,

2:14 None surviving except those who followed his religion with which Allah had sent him.

2:20 And He chose the family of Abraham,

2:22 Among whom was the master of mankind and the absolute seal of the prophets,

2:27 Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

2:30 And He chose the family of 'Imran;

2:33 And what is meant by this 'Imran

2:35 Is the father of Mary, daughter of 'Imran,

2:38 The mother of Jesus, son of Mary, peace be upon them."

2:42 End of his words.

2:44 During the time of the prophet of Allah, Zechariah, peace be upon him,

2:50 There was a man among his followers named 'Imran ibn Mathan.

2:55 This 'Imran was

2:57 The leader of prayer for the Children of Israel in his time.

3:01 He was renowned for righteousness, devotion, and virtue,

3:04 So much so that his status grew immensely among the Children of Israel.

3:08 It so happened that Zechariah and 'Imran married two sisters:

3:14 Elizabeth, daughter of Faqudh,

3:17 The mother of John,

3:18 Was married to Zechariah, peace be upon him;

3:21 While Hannah, daughter of Faqudh,

3:24 The mother of Mary,

3:25 Was married to 'Imran, peace be upon him.

3:28 Hannah was a righteous, good-natured wife,

3:32 Pure, virtuous, God-fearing, and faithful,

3:36 Obedient to her husband and obedient to her Lord.

3:40 Allah had withheld children from her until she grew old.

3:45 They were a household of high standing with Allah.

3:50 While she was once in the shade of a tree,

3:52 She caught sight of a bird feeding its chick,

3:56 And her heart was deeply stirred with the yearning for a child.

3:59 So she supplicated Allah to grant her an offspring,

4:03 Saying:

4:04 "O Allah, I vow to You, if You grant me a child,

4:08 That I will dedicate it entirely to the service of the Holy House,

4:12 To be among its custodians and servants."

4:15 Allah answered her prayer,

4:18 And when she became pregnant, she rejoiced with the greatest joy,

4:22 Saying:

4:23 “(Remember) when the wife of 'Imran said: My Lord! I have vowed unto Thee that which is in my belly as a consecrated (offering). Accept it from me. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Hearer, the Knower!” (3:35)

4:27 "Dedicated purely to the service of Your Holy House,

4:30 Devoted exclusively to Your worship,

4:32 Free from all worldly distractions for Your obedience;

4:35 So accept this sincere vow from me."

4:39 This vow was legally binding in their sacred law,

4:43 For a dedicated child among them

4:45 Would remain in the sanctuary serving it,

4:48 Constantly residing therein until reaching the age of puberty,

4:52 Whereupon he was given the choice:

4:54 If he wished, he could depart wherever he pleased,

4:57 And if he wished, he could stay in the sanctuary serving it.

5:01 However, only boys were dedicated in this manner,

5:04 As a girl was not considered suitable to serve the Holy House

5:08 Due to menstruation and physical impurities that affect her.

5:11 Hannah, the wife of 'Imran,

5:16 Was hoping that what was in her womb would be a male

5:19 So that she could fulfill her vow.

5:21 But when she delivered her child,

5:24 Behold, it was a female!

5:27 She was utterly distraught and at a loss,

5:29 And she said brokenheartedly:

5:31 “And when she was delivered she said: My Lord! Lo! I am delivered of a female - Allah knew best of what she was delivered - the male is not as the female; and lo! I have named her Mary, and lo! I crave Thy protection for her and for her offspring from Satan the outcast.” (3:36)

5:34 Though her Lord knew best what she had delivered,

5:37 For He is the Decreer and the All-Powerful.

5:40 Then she said by way of sorrow, grief, and excuse:

5:44 "And the male is not like the female,"

5:47 Meaning in serving the sanctuary and the worshippers therein,

5:51 Due to her bodily vulnerability and weakness,

5:54 And what befalls her of menstruation and postnatal bleeding.

5:57 "And I, my Lord, have named her Mary."

6:00 Mary in their language

6:03 Means the devoted worshipper and servant.

6:06 "And I seek refuge and protection in You for her and her offspring

6:09 From the outcast Satan."

6:12 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

6:17 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:

6:21 "There is no newborn child

6:23 But that Satan touches him at the moment he is born,

6:26 Whereupon he begins crying out loud from that touch,

6:30 Except for Mary and her son."

6:33 Then Abu Hurayrah said:

6:35 "Recite if you wish:

6:37 'And I seek refuge in You for her and her offspring

6:40 From the outcast Satan.'"

6:45 Allah accepted the vow of the righteous woman,

6:48 Hannah, with gracious acceptance,

6:51 Caused the newborn Mary to grow in a goodly manner,

6:54 Endeared her to the hearts of His righteous servants,

6:58 And entrusted her guardianship to Zechariah, peace be upon him.

7:02 That was because her father, 'Imran,

7:05 Had passed away while she was still in her mother's womb.

7:08 Her mother brought her to the Holy House,

7:12 Placed her before the rabbis and priests, and said to them:

7:16 "Here is this consecrated child for you."

7:19 They said: "This is the daughter of our leader 'Imran,"

7:23 For in his lifetime he used to lead them in prayer.

7:27 So they vied with one another, each wanting to take custody of her,

7:31 Out of honor for her father.

7:33 Zechariah, peace be upon him, said to them:

7:36 "Entrust her to me,

7:38 For I have more right to her than you;

7:40 Besides, her maternal aunt is under my care."

7:43 They said: "No, not until we cast lots for her."

7:47 So they set out toward a river

7:49 And cast into it their pens with which they used to write the Torah.

7:54 Zechariah's pen floated upon the water,

7:57 While their pens sank to the bottom.

8:00 Thus Zechariah, peace be upon him, assumed her guardianship.

8:04 He placed her with her maternal aunt, the mother of John,

8:08 Until she grew up and attained womanhood.

8:12 He built a prayer chamber for her,

8:14 That is, a private room in the sanctuary,

8:17 Which could only be reached by a ladder.

8:20 He would bring her her food, drink, and oil every day.

8:25 “And her Lord accepted her with full acceptance and vouchsafed to her a goodly growth; and made Zachariah her guardian. Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary where she was, he found that she had food. He said: O Mary! Whence cometh unto thee this (food)? She answered: It is from Allah. Allah giveth without stint to whom He will.” (3:37)

8:29 Whenever he entered upon her, he found sustenance with her;

8:31 Namely, out-of-season fruit:

8:34 He would find summer fruit in winter,

8:37 And winter fruit in summer.

8:40 He would ask her, saying:

8:42 "O Mary, from where do you have this food?"

8:46 She would reply:

8:48 "It is from Allah;

8:50 “And her Lord accepted her with full acceptance and vouchsafed to her a goodly growth; and made Zachariah her guardian. Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary where she was, he found that she had food. He said: O Mary! Whence cometh unto thee this (food)? She answered: It is from Allah. Allah giveth without stint to whom He will.” (3:37)

8:55 Allah the Exalted said:

8:57 "When the wife of 'Imran said, 'My Lord,

9:01 “(Remember) when the wife of 'Imran said: My Lord! I have vowed unto Thee that which is in my belly as a consecrated (offering). Accept it from me. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Hearer, the Knower!” (3:35)

9:07 Dedicated to Your service, so accept it from me.

9:13 Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.'

9:19 “And when she was delivered she said: My Lord! Lo! I am delivered of a female - Allah knew best of what she was delivered - the male is not as the female; and lo! I have named her Mary, and lo! I crave Thy protection for her and for her offspring from Satan the outcast.” (3:36)

9:23 'I have delivered a female' —

9:28 “And when she was delivered she said: My Lord! Lo! I am delivered of a female - Allah knew best of what she was delivered - the male is not as the female; and lo! I have named her Mary, and lo! I crave Thy protection for her and for her offspring from Satan the outcast.” (3:36)

9:31 'And the male is not like the female.'

9:36 'And I have named her Mary,

9:40 And I seek refuge in You for her

9:47 “And when she was delivered she said: My Lord! Lo! I am delivered of a female - Allah knew best of what she was delivered - the male is not as the female; and lo! I have named her Mary, and lo! I crave Thy protection for her and for her offspring from Satan the outcast.” (3:36)

9:52 “And her Lord accepted her with full acceptance and vouchsafed to her a goodly growth; and made Zachariah her guardian. Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary where she was, he found that she had food. He said: O Mary! Whence cometh unto thee this (food)? She answered: It is from Allah. Allah giveth without stint to whom He will.” (3:37)

9:57 So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a goodly manner

10:05 And put her under the custody of Zechariah.

10:08 Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber,

10:13 He found with her provision.

10:17 He said, 'O Mary, from where does this come to you?'

10:22 “And her Lord accepted her with full acceptance and vouchsafed to her a goodly growth; and made Zachariah her guardian. Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary where she was, he found that she had food. He said: O Mary! Whence cometh unto thee this (food)? She answered: It is from Allah. Allah giveth without stint to whom He will.” (3:37)

10:26 “And her Lord accepted her with full acceptance and vouchsafed to her a goodly growth; and made Zachariah her guardian. Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary where she was, he found that she had food. He said: O Mary! Whence cometh unto thee this (food)? She answered: It is from Allah. Allah giveth without stint to whom He will.” (3:37)

10:36 Among the manifestations of Allah's divine care for Mary, peace be upon her,

10:43 And His raising her in a goodly manner,

10:46 Was that He sent Gabriel, peace be upon him, to her,

10:49 And he said to her:

10:51 “And when the angels said: O Mary! Lo! Allah hath chosen thee and made thee pure, and hath preferred thee above (all) the women of creation.” (3:42)

10:54 Meaning: He selected you and chose you for His obedience,

10:57 Accepted you for the service of His House,

10:59 Purified you from impurities and filth,

11:03 And from everything that contradicts praiseworthy character and sound human nature,

11:08 And chose you above the women of the worlds in your era.

11:12 O Mary, be devoutly obedient to Allah alone,

11:16 Persist in it,

11:18 Increase your prostrations before Allah,

11:21 And bow down with those who bow.

11:24 For constancy in acts of obedience and prayers preserves blessings

11:30 And draws a person nearer and dearer to his Creator, Mighty and Majestic is He.

11:35 So Mary acted upon Allah's counsel to her:

11:39 She would perform full ritual washing every night

11:42 And stand in prayer until her feet became swollen.

11:48 Out of Mary's intense devotion, peace be upon her,

11:52 She secluded herself from her family, withdrawing from them,

11:55 And went alone to the eastern side of the Holy Mosque

11:59 To worship Allah the Exalted.

12:02 To further her seclusion and separation from people,

12:06 She placed a screen between herself and them.

12:11 One day, while she was in that state,

12:14 Allah sent Gabriel, peace be upon him, to her.

12:18 He appeared before her in the form of a handsome man,

12:22 Perfectly proportioned and of flawless physique,

12:25 In the finest form a human could possess.

12:28 When she saw him entering upon her presence without permission,

12:33 She feared him and thought that he intended some harm toward her.

12:37 “She said: Lo! I seek refuge in the Beneficent One from thee, if thou art Allah-fearing.” (19:18)

12:43 By uttering this statement, she combined seeking refuge in her Lord

12:50 With instilling fear in him of Allah's punishment,

12:53 Should his soul entice him to intend evil toward her.

12:57 Furthermore, her statement indicates that she had attained the highest degrees of chastity and purity,

13:04 as well as distance from any suspicion.

13:06 For she said this to him

13:09 while seeing him as a well-proportioned, handsome human being,

13:13 in a secluded place, completely isolated from other people.

13:17 So when Jibril saw her terror and apprehension,

13:21 he said to her, "I am only a messenger from your Lord to you;

13:26 so do not fear, nor be alarmed.

13:29 He has sent me to you to bestow upon you, by His leave and power, a pure boy,

13:36 cleansed of sins and transgressions,

13:39 full of goodness and blessings,

13:42 whose name is 'Isa."

13:45 Maryam (peace be upon her) was astonished at this,

13:48 and she said, "How can I have a boy

13:51 when I do not have a husband,

13:53 nor could unchastity ever be conceived of me?"

13:56 Thereupon, Jibril (peace be upon him) said to her,

13:59 answering her question:

14:01 "Allah will bring forth a boy from you,

14:04 even if you have no husband

14:06 and no indecency is committed by you,

14:09 for He is capable of all that He wills;

14:12 and so that He may make him a sign to mankind of His exalted power,

14:17 and a mercy from Him to them,

14:19 by having this boy become one of the prophets,

14:23 calling to the worship and monotheism of Allah Almighty.

14:27 And know, O Maryam,

14:30 that Allah has already decreed this matter,

14:33 so it is inevitable."

14:35 Maryam surrendered to the decree of Allah.

14:39 At that point, Jibril (peace be upon him) breathed into the opening of her garment—

14:45 which is the neck opening of the dress—

14:48 and Maryam conceived the child by the leave of Allah Almighty.

14:53 When she felt the pregnancy,

14:57 her chest grew tight with anguish,

14:59 and she did not know what to say to people,

15:02 knowing that they would never believe what she told them.

15:07 When her pregnancy was full-term and delivery drew near,

15:11 she feared her people,

15:13 so she withdrew from them

15:15 and went far away until she reached the farthest part of the valley in Bethlehem,

15:20 eight miles away from Jerusalem.

15:24 Then the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a date-palm.

15:28 When she suffered the agony of labor,

15:31 the misery of isolation without food or drink,

15:35 the heartache over what people would say,

15:38 and feared she might lack patience,

15:41 she wished she had died before this event

15:45 and had been a thing forgotten, completely lost to memory,

15:48 never to be remembered.

15:50 These were truly agonizing moments,

15:53 such as any woman experiences during natural childbirth;

15:57 so how must it have been for Maryam (peace be upon her),

16:01 being in such a distressing state of mind,

16:05 and completely alone besides,

16:08 delivering her very first child without any helper?

16:12 Jibril (peace be upon him) was below her,

16:17 in a place lower than where she sat,

16:20 and he calmed her fears,

16:22 reassured her heart,

16:24 and said to her,

16:26 "Do not grieve, O Maryam."

16:29 Then he struck the ground with his foot,

16:31 and a small stream flowed beneath her.

16:34 And he said to her,

16:36 “Then (one) cried unto her from below her, saying: Grieve not! Thy Lord hath placed a rivulet beneath thee,” (19:24)

16:40 "A sweet stream for you to drink from;

16:43 and shake toward yourself the trunk of the date-palm;

16:46 it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates,

16:49 fit to eat, moist and delicious."

16:53 It has been said:

16:54 "There is nothing better for a postpartum woman than fresh dates,

16:58 nor for a sick person than honey."

17:03 So eat, O Maryam, of those fresh dates,

17:06 drink from that stream,

17:09 be comforted and be of good cheer,

17:12 and banish all sorrows from yourself.

17:15 And if you see any human being

17:17 who asks you about your child,

17:19 “So eat and drink and be consoled. And if thou meetest any mortal, say: Lo! I have vowed a fast unto the Beneficent, and may not speak this day to any mortal.” (19:26)

17:23 meaning: a fast of silence—

17:25 "so I will not speak to any person today."

17:28 Among the Children of Israel,

17:30 whoever wished to exert himself in devotion

17:32 would fast from speech

17:34 just as he fasted from food,

17:36 not speaking until evening came.

17:40 Allah Almighty said:

17:42 “And make mention of Mary in the Scripture, when she had withdrawn from her people to a chamber looking East,” (19:16)

17:45 “And make mention of Mary in the Scripture, when she had withdrawn from her people to a chamber looking East,” (19:16)

17:48 "to an eastern place.

17:51 And she took in seclusion from them

17:55 a screen.

17:57 Then We sent to her

18:00 Our angel,

18:04 “And had chosen seclusion from them. Then We sent unto her Our Spirit and it assumed for her the likeness of a perfect man.” (19:17)

18:09 She said, 'Indeed, I seek refuge

18:13 in the Most Merciful from you,

18:16 if you should be fearing of Allah.'

18:19 He said, 'I am only

18:22 the messenger of your Lord

18:24 to give you

18:26 a pure boy.'

18:29 She said, 'How

18:32 can I have a boy

18:35 when no man has touched me

18:38 when no man has touched me

18:41 and I have not been unchaste?'

18:44 He said, 'Thus

18:46 your Lord says, "It is easy for Me,"

18:50 and We will make him a sign to the people

18:54 and a mercy from Us.

18:59 And it was a matter decreed.'

19:03 So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him

19:06 to a remote place.

19:10 And the pains of childbirth drove her

19:14 to the trunk of a date-palm.

19:17 She said, 'Oh, I wish

19:19 I had died before this

19:25 and was in oblivion, forgotten.'

19:30 But he called her from below her,

19:33 'Do not grieve;

19:35 “Then (one) cried unto her from below her, saying: Grieve not! Thy Lord hath placed a rivulet beneath thee,” (19:24)

19:39 And shake toward you

19:41 the trunk of the date-palm;

19:43 it will drop upon you

19:45 ripe, fresh dates.

19:48 So eat and drink

19:50 and be contented.

19:52 And if you see

19:55 from among humanity anyone,

19:59 say,

20:01 say, "Indeed, I have vowed

20:04 to the Most Merciful a fast,

20:07 “So eat and drink and be consoled. And if thou meetest any mortal, say: Lo! I have vowed a fast unto the Beneficent, and may not speak this day to any mortal.” (19:26)

20:11 Maryam (peace be upon her) carried

20:15 her newborn in her arms

20:17 and brought him to her people,

20:19 doing so because she was fully confident

20:21 of her own innocence and purity;

20:24 thus she came unhesitating and unconcerned.

20:28 But when they saw her, they said to her,

20:31 "O Maryam,

20:33 “Then she brought him to her own folk, carrying him. They said: O Mary! Thou hast come with an amazing thing.” (19:27)

20:35 meaning: a monstrous, atrocious thing,

20:37 and by that they meant fornication—

20:39 far be it from her!

20:42 And they said to her reproachfully,

20:44 "O sister of Harun!"

20:46 She had a half-brother through her father

20:48 named Harun,

20:50 for they used to name themselves

20:52 after the names of the prophets;

20:54 and her brother Harun was

20:56 the most exemplary man among the Children of Israel

20:58 in piety and worship.

21:00 They said to her,

21:02 "O sister of Harun,

21:04 your father was not an unchaste man,

21:06 nor was your mother an unchaste woman;

21:09 you come from a pure household,

21:11 known for righteousness,

21:13 so how could you bring us a child

21:15 without a father?"

21:18 Thereupon, Maryam (peace be upon her) pointed

21:20 to her son 'Isa,

21:22 her demeanor saying to them,

21:25 "Direct your speech to him,

21:27 for he will inform you

21:29 of the reality of the matter."

21:31 But they were not convinced

21:33 by her gesture;

21:35 rather, they said to her,

21:37 "How can we speak to a little child

21:39 who is still in his cradle

21:41 and in his nursing infancy?"

21:43 And they deemed this act of hers

21:45 even more offensive to them

21:47 than the charge they had brought against her

21:49 of unchastity.

21:52 At that moment, Allah caused 'Isa to speak

21:54 (peace be upon him) while he was an infant

21:56 in the cradle,

21:58 and he said to them,

22:00 "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah."

22:02 This was the very first word

22:04 that 'Isa spoke

22:06 (peace be upon him).

22:08 Then he said,

22:10 "He has given me the Scripture"—

22:12 meaning He has decreed that He will grant me

22:14 the Gospel—

22:16 "and He has made me one of

22:18 His noble prophets,

22:20 calling people to the worship of Him

22:22 alone.

22:24 And He has also made me,

22:26 alongside my prophethood,

22:28 blessed, full of

22:30 goodness and blessing

22:32 and purity as long as I remain alive.

22:34 And He has made me likewise

22:36 dutiful to my mother,

22:38 honoring her;

22:40 and He has not made me arrogant,

22:42 haughty, or a committer

22:44 to sins and destructive vices.

22:46 And peace and security

22:48 from Allah, Blessed and Exalted,

22:50 be upon me the day I was born,

22:52 and the day I die,

22:54 departing from this world,

22:56 and the day I am raised alive

22:58 for the reckoning and recompense

23:00 on the Day of Resurrection.

23:02 So when 'Isa,

23:04 peace be upon him, spoke this to them,

23:06 they realized Maryam's innocence.

23:08 Then 'Isa,

23:10 peace be upon him, fell silent

23:12 and did not speak after that

23:14 until he reached the age

23:16 at which normal

23:18 children speak.

23:20 Allah Almighty said:

23:23 "Then she brought him to her people,

23:25 carrying him.

23:27 They said, 'O Maryam,

23:29 “Then she brought him to her own folk, carrying him. They said: O Mary! Thou hast come with an amazing thing.” (19:27)

23:33 O sister of Harun,

23:35 your father was not

23:37 a man of evil,

23:39 nor was your mother

23:41 unchaste.'

23:43 So she pointed to him.

23:45 They said,

23:47 'How can we speak

23:49 “Then she pointed to him. They said: How can we talk to one who is in the cradle, a young boy?” (19:29)

23:51 to a child in the cradle?'

23:53 He said, 'Indeed,

23:55 I am the servant of Allah.

23:57 He has given me the Scripture

23:59 and made me a prophet,

24:01 and He has made me

24:03 blessed

24:05 wherever I may be,

24:07 and has enjoined upon me prayer

24:09 and has enjoined upon me prayer

24:11 and zakat

24:13 as long as I remain alive,

24:15 and to be dutiful

24:17 to my mother,

24:19 and He has not made me

24:21 a tyrannical, wretched tyrant.

24:23 And peace

24:25 be upon me the day

24:27 I was born, and the day I die,

24:29 and the day I am raised

24:31 alive.'"

24:34 A delegation from the Christians of

24:36 Najran came to the Messenger of Allah,

24:38 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

24:40 and said, "Why do you

24:42 revile our master?"—

24:44 meaning the Prophet of Allah,

24:46 'Isa, peace be upon him.

24:49 He said, "What do I say?"

24:51 They said,

24:53 "You say that he is a servant of Allah."

24:55 He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, replied,

24:57 "Yes,

24:59 he is the servant of Allah and His Messenger,

25:01 and His word

25:03 which He bestowed upon Maryam,

25:05 the pure virgin."

25:07 So they became angry and said,

25:09 "Have you ever seen a human being

25:11 without a father?

25:13 If you are truthful,

25:15 then show us his like."

25:17 Thereupon, Allah Almighty revealed

25:19 His saying:

25:21 "Indeed, the example of 'Isa

25:23 before Allah is like that of Adam.

25:25 He created him

25:27 from dust;

25:29 then

25:31 He said to him,

25:33 'Be,' and he was.

25:35 The truth is from your Lord,

25:37 “(This is) the truth from thy Lord (O Muhammad), so be not thou of those who waver.” (3:60)

25:39 so do not be among the doubters.

25:41 Then whoever

25:43 argues with you

25:45 concerning him

25:47 after what has come to you

25:49 of knowledge,

25:51 say, 'Come,

25:53 say, 'Come,

25:55 let us call our sons

25:57 and your sons,

25:59 our women

26:01 and your women,

26:03 our women

26:05 and your women,

26:07 and ourselves

26:09 and yourselves,

26:11 and ourselves

26:13 and yourselves,

26:15 then

26:17 let us pray humbly and invoke

26:19 the curse of Allah

26:21 upon the liars.'

26:23 Indeed, this

26:25 is the true

26:27 narrative.

26:29 And there is no deity

26:31 except Allah.

26:33 And indeed, Allah

26:35 is the Exalted in Might,

26:37 the Wise.

26:39 But if they turn away,

26:41 then indeed, Allah

26:43 is All-Knowing

26:45 of the corrupt."

26:47 Allah Almighty directed

26:49 His Prophet Muhammad,

26:51 peace be upon him,

26:53 saying to him in effect:

26:55 If the People of the Book dispute with you

26:57 concerning 'Isa

26:59 after I have informed you of what is

27:01 the truth of his matter,

27:03 then challenge them to mutual imprecation (mubahalah),

27:05 and say to them:

27:07 "Come, O disputants,

27:09 to a decisive test wherein the truth will be distinguished

27:11 from falsehood,

27:13 which is that we and you summon one another,

27:15 and gather

27:17 all together in one place,

27:19 and then beseech

27:21 Allah and pray earnestly to Him

27:23 that He place His curse

27:25 upon those who are lying in their claim,

27:27 deviating from

27:29 the truth in their belief."

27:31 So they said,

27:33 "O Abu al-Qasim, let us

27:35 consider our affair."

27:38 Then they consulted among themselves

27:40 and said, "By Allah,

27:42 O assembly of Christians,

27:44 you well know that Muhammad

27:46 is indeed a sent prophet,

27:48 and he has brought you the decisive truth

27:50 regarding the account of your master.

27:52 And you certainly know

27:54 that never has a people invoked mutual curses with a prophet

27:56 and had their elders

27:58 survive or their youth

28:00 grow up; it would truly be

28:02 your total eradication if you do so."

28:04 So they came back to the Prophet,

28:06 peace be upon him,

28:08 and said, "O Abu

28:10 al-Qasim, we have decided

28:12 not to invoke curses with you,

28:14 but to leave you upon your religion

28:16 while we return to ours."

28:18 So he did not engage in mutual imprecation with them,

28:20 peace be upon him,

28:22 and agreed to let them pay a tribute (kharaj)

28:24 that they would deliver to him.

28:38 upon our Prophet Muhammad,

28:40 and upon his family and companions,
