0:06 The Third Suffering of the Mother of Moses

0:16 At the very moment the exchange was taking place between Pharaoh and his wife regarding the killing of Moses,

0:23 the mother of Moses was in the depths of agonizing distress over the loss of her infant,

0:28 to the point that Allah described her state, saying,

0:32 “And the heart of the mother of Moses became void, and she would have betrayed him if We had not fortified her heart, that she might be of the believers.” (28:10)

0:37 “And the heart of the mother of Moses became void, and she would have betrayed him if We had not fortified her heart, that she might be of the believers.” (28:10)

0:48 her heart became completely empty, devoid of any capacity to think or manage the situation,

0:55 due to the sheer horror of the shock she experienced upon losing her child.

1:00 In fact, she almost exposed herself and announced her loss of her child in the river,

1:05 were it not for the subtle grace of Allah upon her.

1:08 Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

1:12 "Allah Almighty informs us regarding the heart of Moses's mother when her child went into the sea,

1:17 that it became empty—

1:20 meaning devoid of all worldly concerns, except for Moses."

1:25 This was stated by Ibn 'Abbas, Mujahid, 'Ikrimah, Sa'id ibn Jubayr,

1:30 Abu 'Ubaydah, Al-Dahhak, Al-Hasan al-Basri, Qatadah, and others.

1:36 “And the heart of the mother of Moses became void, and she would have betrayed him if We had not fortified her heart, that she might be of the believers.” (28:10)

1:38 "That is, out of extreme grief, sorrow, and anguish, she almost

1:43 revealed that her child was lost

1:46 and disclosed her condition, had Allah not affirmed her heart and granted her patience."

1:52 Allah Almighty said:

1:54 "Had We not fortified her heart that she might remain among the believers."

1:59 And Al-Sa'di (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

2:02 "When Moses's mother lost him, she grieved with intense sorrow,

2:07 and her heart became empty of all else due to the overwhelming anxiety that unsettled her, as is natural for human beings,

2:15 even though Allah Almighty had forbidden her from grieving and fearing, promising to return him to her.

2:21 She almost disclosed him—that is, revealed what was in her heart—

2:26 had We not fortified her heart,

2:29 so We made her steadfast, and thus she bore it patiently and did not reveal it,

2:33 that she might, through that patience and steadfastness, remain among the believers.

2:37 For when a servant is struck by a calamity and shows patience and steadfastness,

2:43 it indicates that persistent panic in a servant

2:48 is evidence of weak faith."

2:52 It is natural for a human being to feel grief when stricken by calamity,

2:56 but for that grief to persist continuously, or for one to act contrary to Islamic law,

3:02 is blameworthy

3:04 and contrary to the patience that Allah has commanded us to observe.

3:08 Allah Almighty said:

3:11 “And surely We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth and lives and crops; but give glad tidings to the steadfast,” (2:155)

3:24 "And give glad tidings to the patient—"

3:29 “Who say, when a misfortune striketh them: Lo! we are Allah's and lo! unto Him we are returning.” (2:156)

3:35 "—who say, 'Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return.'"

3:47 “Such are they on whom are blessings from their Lord, and mercy. Such are the rightly guided.” (2:157)

3:54 "It is they who are the rightly guided."

4:03 When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw a woman weeping at a grave,

4:08 he commanded her to practice patience.

4:10 On the authority of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:

4:14 The Prophet (peace be upon him) passed by a woman who was weeping at a grave

4:19 and said, "Be mindful of Allah and be patient."

4:23 She replied, "Go away from me, for you have not been afflicted with my calamity!"—as she did not recognize him.

4:31 It was then said to her, "That was the Prophet (peace be upon him)."

4:36 So she came to the door of the Prophet (peace be upon him),

4:40 where she found no doorkeepers.

4:43 She said, "I did not recognize you."

4:46 He said, "True patience is only at the first stroke of calamity."

4:51 Narrated by Al-Bukhari.

4:53 Grief is among the trials by which a Muslim is tested,

4:56 but one must handle it in the manner commanded by Allah Almighty.

5:01 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) lost his son Ibrahim (peace be upon him),

5:07 and he taught us (peace be upon him) how to handle such afflictions.

5:13 On the authority of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:

5:17 We entered with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) upon Abu Sayf the blacksmith,

5:23 who was the foster-father of Ibrahim (peace be upon him).

5:27 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) took Ibrahim,

5:31 kissed him, and smelled him.

5:34 Later, we entered upon him while Ibrahim was breathing his last,

5:39 and the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) began to shed tears.

5:44 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him,

5:48 "Even you, O Messenger of Allah?"

5:51 He replied, "O Ibn 'Awf, it is mercy."

5:56 Then he followed it with another statement,

5:58 and he (peace be upon him) said:

6:01 "The eye sheds tears and the heart grieves,

6:05 but we say nothing except what pleases our Lord.

6:09 And indeed, O Ibrahim, by your departure we are deeply grieved."

6:14 Narrated by Al-Bukhari.

6:16 This is what is required of you, my dear sister, in times of calamity:

6:21 that grief remain contained within the heart

6:24 and not spill over onto the tongue in the form of wailing and lamentation,

6:28 turning sorrow into formal wailing,

6:31 whereby you fall into one of the major sins.

6:35 Regarding this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

6:38 "Two matters among people constitute disbelief in them:

6:42 slandering lineage and wailing over the dead."

6:46 Narrated by Muslim.

6:48 He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said:

6:52 "Wailing over the dead is a practice from the Days of Ignorance.

6:56 If the wailing woman does not repent before she dies,

7:00 she will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection wearing garments of pitch

7:05 over which a coat of mail made of flaming fire will be placed."

7:10 Narrated by Ibn Majah.

7:12 Thus, the grief and fear experienced by the mother of Moses over her infant child

7:18 almost exceeded the permissible limits,

7:21 were it not for the subtle grace of Allah upon her and His fortifying of her heart.

7:25 Allah Almighty said:

7:27 “And the heart of the mother of Moses became void, and she would have betrayed him if We had not fortified her heart, that she might be of the believers.” (28:10)

7:32 "Had We not fortified her heart that she might remain among the believers."

7:37 Al-Tahir Ibn 'Ashur (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

7:41 "Fortifying the heart means strengthening it against weakness,

7:45 just as a feeble limb is bound tight—

7:48 meaning We fortified her heart by instilling patience within it."

7:52 Ibn Abi Zamanin (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

7:56 "Fortifying the heart means inspiring it with patience, strengthening it, and reinforcing it."

8:01 Abu Hayyan al-Andalusi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

8:05 "The literal meaning of *rabt* is binding, which applies physically to tangible bodies,

8:10 and it is borrowed metaphorically for the firmness and tranquility that enter the heart after shaking."

8:17 Fortifying the heart is a blessing from Allah that He bestows upon whomever He wills among His believing servants,

8:25 and a believer needs it most during times of hardship,

8:29 when upholding the truth in an era of falsehood,

8:32 and when confronting the forces of falsehood and tyranny,

8:36 such as Pharaoh and those who resemble him.

8:39 During the Battle of Badr, Allah mentioned His favor upon the Companions, saying:

8:46 “When He made the slumber fall upon you as a reassurance from him and sent down water from the sky upon you, that thereby He might purify you, and remove from you the fear of Satan, and make strong your hearts and firm (your) feet thereby.” (8:11)

8:52 “When He made the slumber fall upon you as a reassurance from him and sent down water from the sky upon you, that thereby He might purify you, and remove from you the fear of Satan, and make strong your hearts and firm (your) feet thereby.” (8:11)

9:01 “When He made the slumber fall upon you as a reassurance from him and sent down water from the sky upon you, that thereby He might purify you, and remove from you the fear of Satan, and make strong your hearts and firm (your) feet thereby.” (8:11)

9:10 “When He made the slumber fall upon you as a reassurance from him and sent down water from the sky upon you, that thereby He might purify you, and remove from you the fear of Satan, and make strong your hearts and firm (your) feet thereby.” (8:11)

9:17 And regarding the youths in the story of the People of the Cave,

9:22 Allah said about them as they stood against their people:

9:26 “We narrate unto thee their story with truth. Lo! they were young men who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.” (18:13)

9:32 “We narrate unto thee their story with truth. Lo! they were young men who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.” (18:13)

9:40 “And We made firm their hearts when they stood forth and said: Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We cry unto no Allah beside Him, for then should we utter an enormity.” (18:14)

9:47 “And We made firm their hearts when they stood forth and said: Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We cry unto no Allah beside Him, for then should we utter an enormity.” (18:14)

9:51 “And We made firm their hearts when they stood forth and said: Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We cry unto no Allah beside Him, for then should we utter an enormity.” (18:14)

9:56 "We would then indeed have spoken an outrageous lie.

10:02 These, our people, have taken gods besides Him—

10:11 “These, our people, have chosen (other) gods beside Him though they bring no clear warrant (vouchsafed) to them. And who doth greater wrong than he who inventeth a lie concerning Allah?” (18:15)

10:17 who then is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah?"

10:24 And the mother of Moses was in dire need of this blessing,

10:28 so Allah bestowed it upon her,

10:31 enabling her to remain patient in the face of Pharaoh's tyranny and his slaughter of infant children.

10:36 Whenever Allah fortifies the heart of a believer,

10:40 they remain steadfast, show patience, and handle matters wisely.

10:44 This is precisely what happened with the mother of Moses.

10:47 So how did she act during this third trial that she endured?
