Treat them with harshness, for it is better for their impudence and abandonment of the dawn, for their habit leads to heedlessness and a lack of laughter, for too much of it kills the heart. Let the first thing you begin with in reforming the children of the Commander of the Faithful be reforming yourself, for their eyes are fixed on your eyes. What is good with them is what you approve of, and what is ugly with them is what you deplore. Teach them the Book of God, and do not force them to do so, so they will get bored of it, and do not leave them from it, so they abandon it. Then increase their poetry, the most chaste, and the hadith, the most noble, and do not lead them from one knowledge to another until they master it, for crowding of speech in the hearing is misleading to understanding.
