0:22 Salman al-Farisi, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

0:28 "If a servant remembers Allah during times of ease,

0:31 And praises Him during times of prosperity,

0:34 Then when he is afflicted by hardship and calls upon Allah,

0:37 The angels say:

0:39 'A familiar voice from a weak servant,'

0:42 And they intercede for him.

0:44 But if a servant does not remember Allah during times of ease,

0:48 And does not praise Him during times of prosperity,

0:50 Then when he is afflicted by hardship and calls upon Allah,

0:54 The angels say:

0:56 'An unfamiliar voice,'

0:58 And they do not intercede for him."

1:00 Abu al-Darda', may Allah be pleased with him, said:

1:04 "A Muslim servant may be forgiven by Allah while he is asleep."

1:09 It was said to him:

1:10 "How is that, O Abu al-Darda'?"

1:13 He said:

1:14 "His brother rises in the night and performs the night prayer (tahajjud),

1:18 He calls upon Allah and He answers him,

1:21 And he prays for his brother, and He answers him."

1:24 'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

1:30 "Allah does not listen to one who seeks to be heard,

1:33 Nor to one who shows off, nor to one who plays,

1:36 Nor to any caller,

1:38 Except for one who calls out with a supplication that is firmly rooted in his heart."

1:43 Thabit al-Bunani, may Allah have mercy on him,

1:46 A man among the worshippers, may Allah have mercy on him,

1:49 Said one day to his brothers:

1:52 "I truly know when my Lord, the Almighty and Majestic, answers me."

1:57 They were amazed by his statement and said:

2:00 "How do you know that?"

2:02 He said:

2:03 "When my heart trembles, my skin shivers,

2:07 My eyes overflow, and I am granted ease in supplication,

2:10 Then I know that I have been answered."

2:14 Tawus, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

2:17 "Beware of taking your needs to one who has closed his door against you,

2:22 And has placed a barrier between you and him.

2:25 Instead, you must take your needs to the One whose door is open to you until the Day of Resurrection;

2:32 He asked you to call upon Him and promised you an answer."

2:36 Abu al-'Atahiyah said:

2:39 "Do not ever ask your brother for a need,

2:43 But ask the One whose doors are never barred.

2:46 Allah becomes angry if you cease asking Him,

2:50 While the son of Adam, when asked, becomes angry.

2:55 So direct your request to the Lord, for indeed,

2:58 We live and move within the grace of our Lord's bounty."

3:02 Mutarrif, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

3:05 "I looked into the beginning of this matter—from whom does it originate?

3:09 And I found it is from Allah the Almighty.

3:12 I said: 'And upon whom does its completion depend?'

3:15 And I found it is upon Allah the Almighty.

3:18 And I looked at what its foundation is,

3:21 And I found its foundation is supplication."

3:24 Ibrahim Ibn Adham, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

3:27 "Why do we complain of our poverty to those like ourselves,

3:31 And not seek its removal from our Lord?"

3:35 Al-Fudayl Ibn 'Iyad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

3:39 "By Allah, if you were to despair of the creation,

3:42 To the point that you did not want anything from them,

3:45 Your Master would give you everything you want."

3:48 He also said, may Allah have mercy on him:

3:51 "When a believer finds the relief delayed,

3:54 And despairs of it after much supplication and beseeching,

3:58 And no sign of an answer appears to him,

4:01 He returns to himself with blame,

4:04 And says to it:

4:06 'It is only because of you that I have been denied;

4:08 If there were any good in you, you would have been answered.'"

4:12 Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

4:15 "Do you mock supplication and belittle it?

4:19 You do not know what supplication achieves.

4:22 The arrows of the night are piercing, but

4:26 They have a time, and for that time there is a decree.

4:30 My Lord holds them back when He wills,

4:33 And releases them when the decree is fulfilled."

4:37 Some etiquettes of supplication.

4:42 And some mistakes therein.

4:45 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said:

4:48 "Ask your Lord for everything, even a shoelace,

4:51 For if He does not make it easy,

4:54 By Allah, it will not be made easy."

4:57 Malik Ibn Anas, may Allah have mercy on him, was asked about a man who calls out saying:

5:02 "O my Master!"

5:04 He said:

5:05 "I prefer that he calls out with the supplication of the Prophets:

5:09 'Our Lord, our Lord.'"

5:12 'Umar Ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz, may Allah have mercy on him, passed by a man

5:16 Who had pebbles in his hand, playing with them while saying:

5:20 "O Allah, marry me to the wide-eyed houris."

5:24 'Umar stood over him and said:

5:27 "What a poor suitor you are!

5:29 Why do you not drop the pebbles,

5:31 And make your supplication sincere to Allah?"

5:34 Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

5:37 "One should keep his supplication quiet,"

5:40 Due to His saying: ﴾Call upon your Lord in humility and privately﴿.

5:41 “Say (unto mankind): Cry unto Allah, or cry unto the Beneficent, unto whichsoever ye cry (it is the same). His are the most beautiful names. And thou (Muhammad), be not loud-voiced in thy worship nor yet silent therein, but follow a way between.” (17:110)

5:46 He said:

5:47 "This applies to supplication."

5:49 And he said:

5:50 "They used to dislike raising their voices in supplication."

5:55 Mujahid, may Allah have mercy on him, heard a man raising his voice in supplication,

6:01 So he threw pebbles at him.
