0:15 It is narrated from ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, that she said:

0:18 "Glad tidings to the one who finds much seeking of forgiveness in his record."

0:23 And it is narrated from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Awn, may Allah have mercy on him, that he said:

0:28 "If a man were to devote himself entirely to these worldly kings, he would not benefit."

0:34 So how much more so for the one who devotes himself to the One to whom belong the heavens, the earth, and all that is between them?

0:40 And all that is beneath the soil.

0:42 Yahya ibn Mu‘adh, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

0:45 "For the repentant, there is a pride that no other pride can match."

0:49 "Allah rejoices in his repentance."

0:51 And it is narrated from al-Rabi‘ ibn Khuthaym, may Allah have mercy on him:

0:56 That he said to his companions:

0:58 "Do you know the ailment, the medicine, and the cure?"

1:02 They said, "No."

1:04 He said:

1:05 "The ailment is sins."

1:07 "The medicine is seeking forgiveness."

1:09 "And the cure is that you repent and do not return to them."

1:13 And it is narrated from Sa‘id al-Jariri that he said:

1:16 I said to al-Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him:

1:18 "O Abu Sa‘id,"

1:20 "A man commits a sin, then repents,"

1:23 "Then he commits a sin, then repents,"

1:25 "Then he commits a sin, then repents,"

1:28 "Until when?"

1:31 He said:

1:32 "I know this to be nothing but the character of the believers."

1:36 And it is narrated from Shaqiq ibn Ibrahim al-Balkhi, may Allah have mercy on him, that he said:

1:40 "The sign of repentance is:"

1:42 "Weeping over what has passed,"

1:45 "Fear of falling into sin,"

1:48 "Abandoning evil companions,"

1:50 "And keeping company with the righteous."

1:55 Contemplation and reflection.

1:57 From Abu al-Darda’, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

2:03 "An hour of reflection is better than standing in prayer for a whole night."

2:07 And Umm al-Darda’, may Allah be pleased with her, was asked:

2:11 "What was the best deed of Abu al-Darda’?"

2:15 She said:

2:17 "Reflection and taking lessons."

2:20 And it is narrated from Yusuf ibn Sa‘id ibn Muslim that he said:

2:23 I said to ‘Ali ibn Bakkar:

2:25 "Was Ibrahim ibn Adham, may Allah have mercy on him, a man of much prayer?"

2:30 He said, "No."

2:32 "But he was a man of reflection."

2:34 "He would sit all night reflecting."

2:38 And it was said to Ibrahim, may Allah have mercy on him:

2:41 "You reflect a great deal."

2:43 He said:

2:45 "Reflection is the marrow of action."

2:47 And al-Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

2:50 "Reflection is a mirror,"

2:52 "It shows you your good deeds and your bad deeds."

2:55 And he also said, may Allah have mercy on him:

2:58 "An hour of reflection,"

3:00 "Is better than standing in prayer for a night."

3:02 Seclusion.

3:07 The importance of being independent of people.

3:09 And not asking them for anything.

3:11 Withdrawing from people.

3:14 Not mixing with them excessively.

3:16 And being cautious of them.

3:18 ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

3:23 "Take your share of seclusion."

3:25 And from Abu al-Darda’, may Allah be pleased with him:

3:28 He said:

3:30 "The best hermitage for a Muslim is his own home,"

3:34 "Where he restrains his sight, his hearing, and his private parts."

3:38 "And beware of the marketplaces,"

3:41 "For they cause heedlessness and distraction."

3:44 And it is narrated from Talhah ibn ‘Ubaydullah, may Allah be pleased with him:

3:48 And he was one of the cleverest of the Quraysh:

3:50 He said:

3:52 "The least of a man's faults,"

3:54 "Is that he sits in his house a lot."

3:56 And from ‘Uthman ibn Abi al-‘As, may Allah be pleased with him:

4:00 That he said:

4:02 "Were it not for the Friday prayer and the congregational prayer,"

4:04 "I would have built a room in the highest part of this house of mine,"

4:08 "And I would not have left it until I was taken out to my grave."

4:12 And Wuhayb ibn al-Ward, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

4:16 "It used to be said:"

4:18 "Wisdom consists of ten parts,"

4:20 "Nine of which are in silence,"

4:22 "And the tenth is seclusion from people."

4:25 "So I treated my soul with silence,"

4:27 "But I found I could not master all that I wanted from it."

4:31 "So I realized that all ten parts are in seclusion from people."

4:36 And al-Sari al-Saqati, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

4:40 "A lack of sincerity leads to a multitude of associates."

4:44 And it was said to Ibn al-Mubarak, may Allah have mercy on him:

4:47 "When you pray with us, why do you not sit with us?"

4:51 He said:

4:53 "I go to sit with the Companions and the Tabi‘un."

4:56 They said:

4:58 "And where are the Companions and the Tabi‘un?"

5:00 He said:

5:02 "I go to look into my knowledge,"

5:04 "And I grasp their traditions and their deeds."

5:07 "What should I do with you?"

5:09 "You backbite people."

5:12 And distancing oneself from many people,

5:14 Is closer to Allah.

5:16 Flee from people as you would flee from a lion.

5:20 Hold fast to your religion, and your efforts will be preserved for you.

5:24 And Imam Malik ibn Anas, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

5:29 "The people who have passed,"

5:31 "Loved seclusion and being apart from people."

5:35 And Habib Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him,

5:39 Used to seclude himself in his house and say:

5:42 "Whoever does not find coolness of eye in You, may he find no coolness of eye."

5:46 "And whoever does not find comfort in You, may he find no comfort."

5:49 And Malik ibn Dinar, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

5:54 "Every brother, companion, and associate,"

5:57 "From whom you do not benefit in the affairs of your religion,"

6:00 "Flee from him."

6:02 And some of the salaf, may Allah have mercy on them, said:

6:05 "I am amazed at the one who knows the path to his Lord,"

6:08 "How can he live with anyone else?"

6:11 The importance of being independent of people,

6:17 Not asking them for anything, and cutting off reliance upon them.

6:20 From Umm al-Darda’, she said:

6:24 Abu al-Darda’, may Allah be pleased with him, said to me:

6:27 "Do not ask people for anything."

6:30 She said, "I asked, 'What if I am in need?'"

6:33 He said, "What if you are in need?"

6:36 "Follow the harvesters,"

6:39 "And look at what falls from them,"

6:42 "Gather it, grind it, then eat it,"

6:45 "And do not ask people for anything."

6:49 And Sufyan al-Thawri, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

6:52 "You must earn a pure living,"

6:55 "And what you earn with your own hands."

6:58 "For the one who eats the filth of people,"

7:01 "Whether you eat it or wear it,"

7:04 "The one who eats the filth of people,"

7:07 "He speaks according to his desires,"

7:10 "And he humbles himself before people,"

7:13 "For fear that they might withhold from him."

7:16 "For the one who gives you something of his wealth,"

7:19 "It is merely his filth."

7:22 And the interpretation of his filth is:

7:25 No one asks people for anything,

7:28 Except that he becomes lowly and humiliated before them.

7:31 And from Qatadah, he said:

7:34 I found Khulayd ibn ‘Abdullah al-‘Asri,

7:37 May Allah have mercy on him, and he said:

7:40 "You will find the believer chaste, yet asking of his Lord."

7:43 "You will find him wealthy, yet poor."

7:46 He said, "You will find him chaste toward people,"

7:49 "Asking of his Lord, the Almighty and Majestic."

7:52 "Humiliated before his Lord, but honorable in his own self."

7:55 "Wealthy, independent of people,"

7:58 "But poor, in need of his Lord."

8:02 Qatadah, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

8:05 "Those are the characteristics of the believer."

8:08 "He is the best of help and the easiest of people to support."

8:13 The sayings of some of the salaf,

8:16 Regarding the preference for mixing with people,

8:19 And their guidance for those who do mix with them.

8:24 And he warned, may Allah have mercy on him, saying:

8:27 "I have told myself not to mix with people,"

8:30 "So what do you think?"

8:33 He said, "Do not do that."

8:36 "For people have need of you,"

8:39 "And you have need of them."

8:42 "You have needs from them,"

8:45 "And they have needs from you."

8:48 "But be among them as one who is deaf yet hearing,"

8:51 "Silent yet speaking."

8:54 And they mentioned in the presence of Wahb ibn Munabbih, may Allah have mercy on him,

8:57 The worship of the Children of Israel and their travels.

9:00 He said, and Wahb, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

9:03 "Whoever mixes with people,"

9:06 "Maintains piety, and is patient with their harm,"

9:09 "Is better in my estimation."

9:12 And al-Shafi‘i, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

9:15 "Withdrawing from people breeds enmity,"

9:18 "And being too open with them attracts,"

9:21 "Evil companions."

9:24 "So be between withdrawal and openness."

9:28 And Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

9:31 "If there is tribulation,"

9:34 "There is no harm in a man secluding himself wherever he wishes."

9:37 "But if there is no tribulation,"

9:40 "Then the cities are better."
