And from Abd al-Aziz Ibn Abi Rawwad, who said:

"I saw a sore on the hand of Muhammad Ibn Wasi', may Allah have mercy on him.

He seemed to notice that I was distressed by it,

so he said, 'Do you know what blessings Allah has bestowed upon me in this sore?'"

"I envy the man who has just enough to live on and is content with it."

"I envy someone even more than that, by Allah:

the one who wakes up hungry and goes to sleep hungry,

yet is content with Allah, the Almighty and Majestic."

And Yahya Ibn Mu'adh, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

"If you are not content with Allah,

how can you ask Him to be content with you?"

When Abd al-Malik Ibn Umar Ibn Abd al-Aziz died,

Umar, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

"I seek refuge in Allah from having a desire for anything that contradicts the will of Allah,

for that would not be appropriate for me, given His trials and His kindness toward me."

And Abu Mu'awiyah al-Aswad, may Allah have mercy on him, said regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted:

﴾We will surely cause him to live a good life﴿,

"He said: 'It is contentment and satisfaction.'"

And al-Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

"Whoever is content with what Allah has apportioned for him,

it will suffice him, and Allah will bless him in it.

And whoever is not content, it will not suffice him, nor will Allah bless him in it."

Some of the wise said:

"Treat what you sought of this world but did not attain,

as something that never crossed your mind and you did not attain."

"If you grieve over what has slipped from your hands,

Abu Tayyib Sahl Ibn Muhammad Sa'luki, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

"If the contentment of people is difficult and unattainable,

the contentment of Allah is easy and should not be abandoned."

And Hatim al-Asamm, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

"Whoever wakes up upright in four things,

he is moving within the contentment of Allah:
