0:00 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
0:04 The life of the salaf.
0:06 Between speech and action.
0:11 The state of the salaf regarding the Qur'an and its instruction.
0:14 And its impact upon them.
0:17 Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, used to—
0:20 whenever Abu Musa sat with him—
0:22 often say to him:
0:24 "Remind us, O Abu Musa."
0:27 So he would recite.
0:29 And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him:
0:32 He said:
0:33 'Uyaynah ibn Hisn ibn Hudhayfah arrived,
0:36 and he stayed with his nephew, al-Hurr ibn Qays.
0:40 He was among those whom Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, used to bring close to him.
0:45 The reciters (Qurra') were the members of Umar's councils and his consultants,
0:50 whether they were mature men or youths.
0:53 'Uyaynah said to his nephew:
0:55 "O my nephew,
0:57 do you have influence with this leader?
1:00 Seek permission for me to see him."
1:02 He said:
1:03 "I will seek permission for you."
1:05 Ibn Abbas said:
1:07 So al-Hurr sought permission for 'Uyaynah,
1:10 and Umar granted it.
1:12 When he entered upon him, he said:
1:14 "O Ibn al-Khattab,
1:17 by Allah, you do not give us much,
1:19 nor do you judge between us with justice."
1:22 Umar became angry,
1:24 to the point that he intended to strike him.
1:26 Al-Hurr said to him:
1:28 "O Commander of the Faithful,
1:30 Allah the Exalted said to His Prophet, peace be upon him:
1:35 ﴿Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good,﴾
1:38 ﴿and turn away from the ignorant.﴾
1:41 And this man is one of the ignorant."
1:44 By Allah, Umar did not go beyond this verse when he recited it to him;
1:49 he was one who would stop at the Book of Allah.
1:53 Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, met
1:55 Nafi' ibn 'Abd al-Harith at 'Usfan,
1:58 and Umar had appointed him over Makkah.
2:02 He asked, "Whom have you appointed over the people of the valley?"
2:06 He replied, "Ibn Abza."
2:09 He asked, "And who is Ibn Abza?"
2:12 He said, "One of our freed slaves."
2:16 He said, "You have appointed a freed slave over them?"
2:20 He replied, "He is a reciter of the Book of Allah the Almighty,
2:25 and he is knowledgeable about the laws of inheritance."
2:28 Umar said:
2:29 "Indeed, your Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
2:34 'Verily, Allah raises some people by this Book,
2:38 and lowers others by it.'"
2:41 And from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
2:45 "The bearer of the Qur'an should be known by his night
2:49 when people are sleeping,
2:51 and by his day when people are breaking their fast,
2:55 and by his sadness when people are joyful,
2:58 and by his weeping when people are laughing,
3:01 and by his silence when people are gossiping,
3:05 and by his humility when people are arrogant."
3:09 "It is fitting for the bearer of the Qur'an
3:11 to be weeping, sorrowful,
3:14 forbearing, wise, and quiet.
3:18 It is not fitting for the bearer of the Qur'an to be harsh, heedless,
3:24 nor clamorous, loud-mouthed, or hot-tempered."
3:29 He also said, may Allah be pleased with him:
3:32 "These hearts are vessels,
3:34 so occupy them with the Qur'an,
3:37 and do not occupy them with anything else."
3:39 He also said, may Allah be pleased with him:
3:42 "If you desire knowledge, then stir up the Qur'an,
3:46 for in it is the knowledge of the first and the last."
3:50 A man said to him:
3:52 "I recite the Mufassal (surahs) in one rak'ah."
3:55 He said to him, "Like the reciting of poetry?
3:59 There are people who recite the Qur'an, but it does not pass their throats;
4:04 but if it settles in the heart and takes root, it brings benefit."
4:09 And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, who said:
4:13 "That I recite Surah al-Baqarah and chant it (with tartil)
4:16 is more beloved to me than reciting the entire Qur'an."
4:21 And from Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, may Allah have mercy on him, who said:
4:25 "We learned the Qur'an from a people who informed us
4:29 that when they learned ten verses,
4:32 they would not move on to the next ten
4:35 until they learned what was in them.
4:38 So we learned the Qur'an and how to act upon it.
4:42 And after us, a people will inherit the Qur'an
4:45 who will drink it down like water,
4:47 but it will not pass their throats."
4:50 He, may Allah have mercy on him, recited the Qur'an in the mosque for forty years.
4:56 Some of the salaf said:
4:58 "Whoever wishes to know who he is,
5:01 let him present himself to the Qur'an."
5:04 Nafi' ibn Abi Nu'aym al-Muqri', may Allah have mercy on him, said:
5:09 "This Qur'an is magnificent;
5:12 it came from the Magnificent.
5:14 So when you recite it,
5:16 do not be occupied with anything else,
5:19 and consider whom you are addressing."
5:21 Ibn Kathir al-Muqri', may Allah have mercy on him, used to—
5:25 when his students wanted to recite—
5:28 gather them and exhort them,
5:30 and say:
5:32 "I only do this
5:34 so that you may approach the recitation of the Qur'an
5:37 with humble hearts,
5:39 submissive souls,
5:41 and tearful eyes."
5:43 When Abdullah ibn Idris
5:46 al-Muqri', may Allah have mercy on him, was dying,
5:48 his daughter wept.
5:50 He said to her, "Do not weep,
5:53 for I have completed the Qur'an in this house
5:56 four thousand times."
5:58 Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
6:03 "It is grievous to me that the world should consume the hearts of men
6:08 while the Qur'an is in their chests."
6:10 And the Qadi Abdullah ibn Talib, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
6:15 "True honor belongs to the one who possesses the Qur'an and knowledge;
6:19 this is the honorable one.
6:21 As for the one who possesses the honor of authority,
6:24 he is not truly honorable."
6:27 Al-Fadl al-Raqashi, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
6:30 "The worshippers have not found pleasure,
6:32 and their hearts have not taken flight for anything,
6:35 like the beauty of a voice reciting the Qur'an.
6:38 And every heart that does not respond to the beauty of a voice reciting the Qur'an
6:42 is a dead heart."
6:45 Al-Fadl also said:
6:47 "And what eye does not shed tears at a beautiful voice,
6:50 except the eye of one who is heedless or distracted?"
6:55 Iyas ibn Mu'awiyah, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
6:58 "The likeness of those who recite the Qur'an
7:01 while not knowing its Tafsir
7:04 is like a people to whom a letter from their king came at night,
7:08 and they had no lamp,
7:11 so they were filled with awe,
7:14 yet they did not know what was in the letter.
7:17 And the likeness of one who knows the Tafsir
7:20 is like a man who brought them a lamp,
7:23 so they read what was in the letter."
7:27 And from al-Sha'bi, may Allah have mercy on him, who said:
7:30 "Whoever recites the Qur'an will not suffer from senility."
7:33 Khaythamah ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, may Allah have mercy on him,
7:37 used to complete the Qur'an every three days.
7:41 Ibn Muhayriz, may Allah have mercy on him,
7:44 used to complete the Qur'an every seven days.
7:47 And from 'Ammar ibn 'Umar al-Bajali, who said:
7:51 "We went out with Muhammad ibn al-Nadr al-Harithi,
7:54 may Allah have mercy on him, to Makkah.
7:57 We would not wake up at any hour of the night
8:00 but that he was sitting on his camel reciting."
8:04 He said, "We used to think
8:08 that he did not sleep until he entered Makkah."
8:11 He said, "And when he would stop,
8:14 he would be in the service of his companions."
8:17 It was said to him, 'O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman,
8:20 we will take care of this for you.'
8:23 He would come to them and say:
8:26 'Are you depriving me of the reward?'"
8:29 And from Qatadah, may Allah have mercy on him:
8:32 He used to complete the Qur'an once every seven nights.
8:36 When Ramadan arrived,
8:39 he would complete it once every three nights.
8:42 And when the last ten days arrived,
8:45 he would complete it once every night.
8:49 And from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, may Allah have mercy on him:
8:52 He used to complete the Qur'an every two nights.
8:55 Malik ibn Dinar,
8:58 may Allah have mercy on him, said:
9:01 "When the Qur'an is recited to the truthful ones,
9:04 their hearts yearn for the Hereafter."
9:07 He also said, may Allah have mercy on him:
9:10 "O bearers of the Qur'an,
9:13 what has the Qur'an planted in your hearts?
9:16 For the Qur'an is the spring of the believer,
9:19 just as rain is the spring of the earth.
9:22 For Allah sends down rain from the sky
9:25 to the earth, and it reaches the seed,
9:28 and the grain is within it;
9:31 the foulness of its location does not prevent it
9:34 from stirring, turning green, and becoming beautiful.
9:37 So, O bearers of the Qur'an,
9:41 what has it planted in your hearts?
9:44 Where are the people of one surah?
9:47 Where are the people of two surahs?
9:50 What have you done with them?"
9:53 Muhammad ibn Wasi', may Allah have mercy on him, said:
9:56 "The Qur'an is the garden of the gnostics (those who know Allah).
9:59 So where are those who have found sweetness in it?"
10:04 Al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
10:07 "The bearer of the Qur'an
10:10 is the bearer of the banner of Islam.
10:13 It is not fitting for him to engage in idle talk with those who do,
10:16 nor to play with those who play,
10:19 nor to be heedless with those who are heedless."
10:22 Wahib Ibn al-Ward, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
10:25 We examined this hadith,
10:28 and we found nothing more softening to these hearts,
10:32 nor more effective at drawing one toward the truth,
10:35 than the recitation of the Qur'an for one who reflects upon it.
10:38 Some of the salaf said:
10:41 I used to recite the Qur'an without finding its sweetness,
10:44 so I said to myself:
10:47 "Recite it as if you are hearing it
10:50 from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him."
10:53 And a little sweetness came to me.
10:56 Then I said to myself:
11:00 "Recite it as if you are hearing it
11:03 from Jibril, peace be upon him,
11:06 when he was conveying it to the Prophet, peace be upon him."
11:09 He said: "Then the sweetness increased."
11:12 Then I said to myself:
11:15 "Recite it as if you are hearing it
11:18 at the moment Allah spoke it."
11:21 He said: "Then the sweetness became complete."
