0:13 Mu'adh Ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

0:18 "As for me, I sleep and I rise for prayer."

0:21 "I seek the reward of Allah for my sleep just as I seek it for my rising."

0:25 On the authority of al-Tufayl Ibn Abi Ka'b:

0:29 He used to visit Abdullah Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).

0:34 And he would go with him to the marketplace in the morning.

0:36 He said: "When we would go to the market,"

0:40 "Abdullah Ibn Umar would not pass by a merchant, a poor person, or anyone else,"

0:46 "But that he would greet them with peace."

0:49 "I said to him, 'What do you do in the market when you do not stop to trade,'"

0:54 "'Nor ask about goods, nor bargain for them,'"

0:58 "'Nor sit in the gathering places?'"

1:01 "He replied, 'We only go out for the sake of offering the greeting of peace.'"

1:05 "So greet whomever you meet."

1:09 Makhul (may Allah have mercy on him) once visited a sick man.

1:13 He said to him, "Do you consider yourself a guardian of the frontier (murabit) this year?"

1:17 The man replied, "How can you ask me this when I am in this state?"

1:23 He said, "What prevents you from intending that?"

1:27 "For if Allah heals you, you will proceed on your way,"

1:31 "And if your appointed time comes between you and that goal,"

1:34 "Your intention will be recorded for you."

1:36 On the authority of Zubayd Ibn al-Harith al-Yami (may Allah have mercy on him), he said:

1:42 "It pleases me to have an intention for everything,"

1:46 "Even for eating and sleeping."

1:49 Al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

1:52 "I have not cast my gaze, nor spoken with my tongue,"

1:56 "Nor struck with my hand, nor risen upon my feet,"

2:00 "Without first considering whether it is an act of obedience or disobedience."

2:04 "If it is obedience, I proceed,"

2:07 "And if it is disobedience, I refrain."

2:11 Muhammad Ibn al-Fadl al-Balkhi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

2:16 "For forty years, I have not taken a single step for other than the sake of Allah, the Almighty and Majestic."

2:22 Allah’s elevation of the believers and the righteous.

2:28 Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

2:33 "Abu Bakr is our master,"

2:36 "And he freed Bilal, our master (may Allah be pleased with them both)."

2:42 When Harun al-Rashid arrived in al-Raqqah,

2:45 The people rushed behind Abdullah Ibn al-Mubarak (may Allah have mercy on him).

2:50 Sandals were torn and dust rose into the air.

2:54 A slave-mother of the Commander of the Faithful looked out from a tower of the wooden palace.

3:00 When she saw the people, she asked, "What is this?"

3:04 They said, "A scholar from the people of Khurasan has arrived in al-Raqqah,"

3:09 "He is called Abdullah Ibn al-Mubarak."

3:13 She said, "By Allah, this is the true kingdom,"

3:17 "Not the kingdom of Harun, which only gathers people through conditions and aides."

3:23 Salim Ibn Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) entered upon Sulayman Ibn Abd al-Malik.

3:30 Salim was wearing coarse, worn-out garments.

3:34 Sulayman kept welcoming him and honoring him,

3:38 Until he seated him beside him on his throne.

3:41 Umar Ibn Abd al-Aziz was present in the gathering.

3:44 A man from the back of the assembly said to him,

3:48 "Could your uncle not afford to wear finer clothes than these,"

3:54 "To enter upon the Commander of the Faithful?"

3:57 The speaker himself was wearing expensive, elegant clothes.

4:03 Umar said to him,

4:05 "I have not seen these clothes on my uncle lower him to your position,"

4:10 "Nor have I seen your clothes raise you to my uncle’s position."

4:16 The miracles (karamat) of the scholars and the righteous.

4:22 And Allah’s protection of them.

4:24 On the authority of Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:

4:29 "The likeness of the believer in this world is like a sick person,"

4:34 "Who has with him his physician, who knows his ailment and his cure."

4:39 "If he desires what harms him,"

4:41 "He forbids him and says, 'Do not go near it,'"

4:44 "'For if you approach it, it will destroy you.'"

4:47 "He continues to restrain him until he recovers from his pain."

4:52 "Likewise is the believer,"

4:54 "He desires many things,"

4:56 "Many of the worldly comforts that others have been favored with,"

5:01 "But Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, denies them to him and protects him,"

5:05 "Until He takes his soul and admits him into Paradise."

5:10 Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

5:13 "Allah, the Exalted, protects the believer from the world,"

5:17 "Just as the family of a sick person protects their patient from food."

5:22 Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

5:25 "A servant may intend to pursue a matter of trade or authority,"

5:29 "Until it is made easy for him,"

5:31 "Then Allah looks at him,"

5:33 "And says to the angels,"

5:35 "'Turn him away from it,'"

5:37 "'For if I make it easy for him, I will cast him into the Fire.'"

5:41 "So Allah turns him away from it,"

5:43 "And he remains feeling unlucky,"

5:46 "Saying,"

5:47 "'So-and-so has outpaced me,'"

5:49 "'So-and-so has deceived me,'"

5:51 "Yet it is nothing but the grace of Allah, the Almighty and Majestic."

5:55 On the authority of Muhammad Ibn Ka'b (may Allah have mercy on him), he said:

6:00 "Whoever recites the Qur'an, his intellect remains sharp,"

6:03 "Even if he reaches two hundred years of age."

6:05 Al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

6:09 "Whoever perfects his worship of Allah in his youth,"

6:13 "Allah will grant him wisdom in his old age."

6:16 That is the meaning of His saying:

6:19 ﴾ And when he attained his full strength ﴿

6:21 “And when he reached his full strength and was ripe, We gave him wisdom and knowledge. Thus do We reward the good.” (28:14)

6:25 ﴾ And thus do We reward the doers of good. ﴿

6:28 On the authority of Muhammad Ibn al-Munkadir (may Allah have mercy on him), he said:

6:33 "Verily, Allah rectifies the children and grandchildren of a servant through that servant's righteousness,"

6:38 "And He protects him in his own home,"

6:41 "And the homes around him, as long as he is among them."

6:45 On the authority of Khaythamah (may Allah have mercy on him), he said:

6:49 "Glad tidings to the believer,"

6:51 "For how he is protected in his offspring after him."
