0:14 Ibn Mas‘ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

0:18 "Singing sprouts hypocrisy in the heart."

0:22 It was mentioned in the presence of al-Qasim Ibn Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him:

0:26 Singing and finding solace in it.

0:29 He asked them:

0:30 "Tell me,

0:32 if the people of truth and the people of falsehood were distinguished,

0:36 in which group would singing be?"

0:39 They replied, "In the group of falsehood."

0:43 He said, "Then I have no need for it."

0:47 Al-Fudayl Ibn ‘Iyad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

0:50 "Singing is the incantation of adultery."

0:53 Al-Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

0:56 "Two sounds are cursed:

0:58 A flute played during a blessing,

1:01 and wailing during a calamity."

1:06 Guarding the sight from the forbidden.

1:10 Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

1:13 "If a woman passes by you,

1:16 lower your gaze until she has passed you."

1:19 A man entered a house with Ibn Mas‘ud, may Allah be pleased with him.

1:23 It was the house of a man,

1:25 and the man began looking at a woman in the house.

1:28 Ibn Mas‘ud said to him:

1:31 "If your eyes were gouged out,

1:33 it would be better for you than what I see you doing."

1:37 Hassan Ibn Abi Sinan, may Allah have mercy on him, went out to the ‘Eid prayer.

1:41 When he returned, it was said to him:

1:44 "O Abu ‘Abdullah,

1:46 we have never seen an ‘Eid with more women than this one."

1:50 He said:

1:51 "I did not encounter a single woman until I returned."

1:55 Musa al-Juhani said:

1:58 "I was on a journey with Sa‘id Ibn Jubayr, may Allah have mercy on him.

2:03 A woman approached us, and we all looked at her.

2:07 Then Sa‘id lowered his gaze,

2:10 but I continued to look.

2:12 He said:

2:13 'The first look is for you,

2:15 but the second is against you.'"

2:18 Al-‘Ala’ Ibn Ziyad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

2:22 "Do not let your gaze follow the garment of a woman,

2:25 for looking plants desire in the heart."

2:29 Al-Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

2:33 "Many a look has planted desire in the heart of the one who cast it,

2:37 and many a desire has brought its possessor long-lasting sorrow."

2:43 Ibrahim Ibn Adham, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

2:47 "Looking excessively at falsehood

2:49 removes the knowledge of truth from the heart."

2:53 Fudayl Ibn ‘Iyad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

2:56 "Do not look at their vehicles,

2:59 for looking at them extinguishes the light of disapproval for their actions."

3:04 Condemnation of intoxicants.

3:09 ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, stood on the pulpit in Medina and said:

3:15 "Intoxicants were forbidden the day they were forbidden, and they come from five sources:

3:20 grapes, honey, dates,

3:23 wheat, and barley.

3:25 An intoxicant is anything that clouds the intellect."

3:28 ‘Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

3:31 "Beware of intoxicants,

3:33 for they are the key to every evil."

3:36 A man was brought and told:

3:39 "Either you burn this book,

3:42 or you kill this boy,

3:45 or you prostrate to this cross,

3:48 or you commit adultery with this woman,

3:52 or you drink this cup."

3:55 He saw nothing easier for him than drinking the cup.

4:00 So he drank the cup,

4:01 then he committed adultery with the woman,

4:03 killed the boy,

4:05 burned the book,

4:07 and prostrated to the cross.

4:09 Indeed, it is the key to every evil.

4:12 Some of the salaf said:

4:14 "If intellect could be purchased,

4:16 people would pay a high price to acquire it.

4:20 It is astonishing that people spend their wealth on what destroys their intellects."

4:28 Keeping secrets.

4:31 ‘Amr Ibn al-‘As, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

4:34 "I have never entrusted a man with a secret and had him reveal it, then blamed him,

4:39 because I was the one with the narrower chest when I entrusted it to him."

4:44 Al-Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

4:47 "It is a form of betrayal to speak of your brother's secret."

4:51 Dhu al-Nun, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

4:54 "The chests of the free-spirited

4:56 are the graves of secrets."

4:58 Joking and its etiquette.

5:03 Sa‘id Ibn al-‘As, may Allah be pleased with him, said to his son:

5:08 "My son, do not joke with a noble person, for he will hold a grudge against you,

5:13 and do not joke with a base person, for he will become emboldened against you."

5:18 Al-Ahnaf Ibn Qays, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

5:21 "Whoever speaks, laughs, and jokes too much,

5:25 his dignity diminishes.

5:27 Whoever does something excessively becomes known by it."

5:30 Muhammad Ibn al-Munkadir, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

5:34 "Do not joke with children,

5:36 for you will become insignificant to them, and they will take your rights lightly."

5:40 ‘Umar Ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

5:44 "Fear Allah and beware of joking,

5:48 for it breeds resentment and leads to indecency."

5:52 Speak of the Qur'an and sit together with it,

5:56 and if it becomes heavy upon you,

5:58 then [listen to] a good hadith from the hadiths of men.

6:03 Everything has a seed,

6:05 and the seed of enmity is joking.

6:11 Refreshing the soul and providing it with rest.

6:15 ‘Ali Ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

6:19 "These hearts grow weary just as bodies grow weary,

6:23 so seek for them pearls of wisdom."

6:27 Ibn Mas‘ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

6:30 "Grant your soul some leeway and do not force it,

6:33 for if you force the heart toward something, it becomes blind."

6:37 He, may Allah be pleased with him, also said:

6:40 "Hearts have moments of desire and receptivity,

6:43 and hearts have moments of lethargy and aversion.

6:47 So seize them during their desire and receptivity,

6:51 and leave them during their lethargy and aversion."

6:55 Some of the salaf said:

6:57 "Refresh the hearts so they may retain the remembrance [of Allah]."

7:00 Wahb Ibn Munabbih, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

7:03 "It is written in the wisdom of the family of David, peace be upon him:

7:08 'It is fitting for the wise person not to be heedless of four hours:

7:13 an hour in which he holds his soul to account,

7:16 an hour in which he whispers to his Lord,

7:19 an hour in which he meets his brothers

7:22 who inform him of his faults

7:25 and are truthful with him about himself,

7:28 and an hour in which he leaves his soul to its own pleasures

7:32 in what is lawful and beautiful.

7:35 For this hour is an aid for those other hours,

7:39 a source of provision, and a refreshment for the hearts.'"

7:43 The stance of the salaf regarding concessions and adopting them.

7:49 Sulayman al-Taymi, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

7:54 "If you were to adopt the concession of every scholar or the slip of every scholar,

8:00 all evil would gather within you."

8:03 Sufyan al-Thawri, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

8:06 "Knowledge, in our view, is only the reliable concessions from trustworthy sources;

8:10 as for being strict, every person can do that."
