0:13 What has been said regarding hope, and that it is an instinct in man.

0:19 Mutarrif Ibn 'Abdullah, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

0:25 "If I knew when my appointed time was, I would fear for the loss of my sanity."

0:30 "But Allah has favored His servants by making them oblivious to death."

0:35 "Were it not for this obliviousness, they would find no joy in life, nor would markets be established among them."

0:41 The exhortation to shorten one's hopes.

0:46 'Ali Ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

0:51 "The two things I fear most for you are:"

0:55 "Following desires and having long-term hopes."

0:59 "As for following desires, it turns one away from the truth."

1:03 "And as for long-term hopes, it makes one forget the Hereafter."

1:07 "Verily, the Hereafter is approaching, moving forward."

1:11 "Verily, the world is departing, moving backward."

1:15 "Each of them has its own children."

1:18 "So be children of the Hereafter."

1:21 "And do not be children of the world."

1:25 "For today there is action without reckoning."

1:28 "And tomorrow there is reckoning without action."

1:31 Al-Fudayl Ibn 'Iyad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

1:36 "Yesterday is a lesson."

1:39 "Today is for action."

1:41 "And tomorrow is for hope."

1:43 One of the salaf, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

1:46 "I have never slept a sleep,"

1:48 "without telling myself that I might wake up from it."

1:52 Muhammad Ibn Wasi', may Allah have mercy on him, used to:

1:56 When he wanted to sleep, say to his family:

2:00 "I entrust you to Allah,"

2:02 "for this might be the death from which I do not rise."

2:07 This was his habit whenever he wanted to sleep.

2:11 A devout woman in Makkah, when evening came, would say:

2:16 "O soul, this night is your night,"

2:20 "you have no other night besides it."

2:23 Then she would strive in worship.

2:24 And when morning came, she would say:

2:27 "O soul, this day is your day,"

2:30 "you have no other day besides it."

2:32 Then she would strive in worship.

2:34 Bakr al-Muzani, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

2:37 "If you want your prayer to benefit you, say:"

2:41 "Perhaps I will not pray another one after this."

2:44 One of the salaf, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

2:48 It is said:

2:50 "Whoever shortens his hopes finds his life easy."

2:53 Sufyan said:

2:55 "Meaning regarding food and clothing."

2:58 And from Shumayt Ibn 'Ajlan, may Allah have mercy on him, who said:

3:02 "The believer says to his soul:"

3:05 "It is only three days."

3:08 "Yesterday has passed with what was in it."

3:11 "Tomorrow is a hope you may not reach."

3:15 "If you are among those who will see tomorrow,"

3:18 "then tomorrow will come with its own provision."

3:21 "Between you and tomorrow is a day and a night,"

3:25 "in which many souls are taken."

3:28 "You might be the one whose soul is taken."

3:31 "Each day has its own worries."

3:34 "Yet you have burdened your weak heart,"

3:37 "with the worries of years and ages,"

3:40 "the worries of high prices and low prices,"

3:43 "the worries of winter before winter arrives,"

3:46 "and the worries of summer before summer arrives."

3:50 "So what have you left of your weak heart for its Hereafter?"

3:54 "Every day, your lifespan decreases,"

3:57 "your lifespan decreases, yet you do not grieve."

4:00 "Every day, your provision is fulfilled,"

4:03 "yet you do not grieve."

4:07 "You have been given what suffices you,"

4:10 "yet you seek what makes you transgress."

4:13 "You are not satisfied with a little,"

4:16 "nor are you sated by a lot."

4:19 "How can a learned person not perceive his own ignorance,"

4:22 "when he is unable to be grateful for what he already has?"

4:26 "Or how can one work for the Hereafter,"

4:29 "whose desires for the world never cease,"

4:32 "and whose greed for it never ends?"

4:35 "It is truly strange, most strange, for someone to believe,"

4:39 "in the Abode of Eternal Life,"

4:42 "while he strives for the Abode of Deception."

4:45 And from Ibrahim Ibn Nashit, who said:

4:48 Abu Zur'ah, may Allah have mercy on him, said to me:

4:51 "I will tell you something I have not told,"

4:54 "to anyone else."

4:57 "I have not left the mosque for 20 years,"

5:00 "without telling myself that I might return to it."

5:03 One of the salaf, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

5:07 "We all have certainty about death,"

5:10 "yet we see no one preparing for it."

5:13 "We all have certainty about Paradise,"

5:16 "yet we see no one working for it."

5:19 "We all have certainty about the Fire,"

5:22 "yet we see no one fearing it."

5:25 "So what is this confusion?"

5:28 "And what are you waiting for?"

5:31 "Death is the first thing that will come to you,"

5:34 "from Allah, either with good or with evil."

5:37 "O my brothers,"

5:40 "journey to your Lord with a beautiful journey."

5:45 Condemning greed and stinginess.

5:50 Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

5:53 "What disease is more painful than stinginess?"

5:56 And 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, used to:"

6:00 Say from the pulpit:

6:03 "O people, greed is poverty,"

6:06 "and despair [of what others have] is wealth."

6:09 "For when a human despairs of something,"

6:12 "he becomes independent of it."

6:15 Yahya Ibn Mu'adh, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

6:18 "Two calamities, the likes of which the first and last generations have never heard:"

6:21 "Regarding his wealth at the time of his death,"

6:24 "It was asked: 'What are they?'"

6:27 "He said: 'It is all taken from him,'"

6:30 "'and he is questioned about all of it.'"

6:34 One of the salaf, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

6:37 "If you have what Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, gave to,"

6:40 "Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, and 'Isa,"

6:43 "and Muhammad, may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon them,"

6:46 "and you do not consider it enough,"

6:49 "then consider what Allah gave to Nimrod, Pharaoh, and Haman."

6:52 "So when will you succeed?"

6:55 Banan al-Hammal, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

6:58 "The free man is a slave as long as he is greedy,"

7:01 "and the slave is free as long as he is content."
