‘Amr Ibn al-‘As, may Allah be pleased with him, said while he was dying:

"O Allah, I am not powerful that I might prevail,

Nor am I innocent that I might offer an excuse.

O Allah, I am a confessing sinner seeking Your forgiveness."

When death approached ‘Abd al-‘Aziz Ibn Marwan, he said:

"Bring me the shroud in which you will wrap me."

How short is your long duration, and how little is your abundance!"

‘Abd al-Malik Ibn Marwan fell ill,

And in his illness, he began to disparage the world, saying:

He looked at a washerman twisting a garment with his hands,

And said, "I wish I had been a washerman,

Eating from the earnings of my own hands,

When this reached Abu Hazim, he said:

"Praise be to Allah who has made them,

When they are dying, wish for the state we are in,

While when we are dying, we do not wish for the state they are in."

Some merchants informed me about a relative of theirs

That he was dying while he was with him,

And they kept prompting him to say, 'There is no god but Allah,'
