0:15 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

0:20 "Be more concerned with the acceptance of an action than with the action itself."

0:25 "For no action performed with piety is ever small,"

0:29 "and how could an action that is accepted be considered small?"

0:33 Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said concerning the verse of Allah Almighty:

0:38 ◁ ...be mindful of Allah as He deserves to be minded... ▷

0:40 He said: "It means that He is obeyed and not disobeyed,"

0:44 "remembered and not forgotten,"

0:46 "and thanked and not disbelieved."

0:49 Narrated 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her):

0:52 She wrote to Mu'awiyah Ibn Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him and his father):

0:57 "If you fear Allah, He will suffice you against the people."

1:01 "But if you fear the people,"

1:03 "they will avail you nothing against Allah."

1:07 "So fear Allah."

1:09 Abdullah Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said:

1:14 "Indeed, the people of piety have signs by which they are known,"

1:18 "and by which they recognize it within themselves:"

1:21 "whoever shows patience in times of affliction,"

1:23 "is pleased with the divine decree,"

1:25 "gives thanks for blessings,"

1:27 "and humbles himself before the rulings of the Qur'an."

1:30 Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

1:34 "Whoever fears Allah, Allah is with him."

1:38 "And whoever has Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, with him,"

1:41 "has with him the party that can never be defeated,"

1:44 "the guardian who never sleeps,"

1:47 "and the guide who never strays."

1:50 When the rebellion of Ibn al-Ash'ath occurred,

1:53 Talq Ibn Habib (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

1:57 "Protect yourselves from it with piety."

2:00 It was said to him:

2:02 "Describe piety to us."

2:04 He replied:

2:06 "Piety is acting in obedience to Allah,"

2:09 "upon light from Allah,"

2:11 "hoping for the mercy of Allah."

2:13 "And it is abandoning disobedience to Allah,"

2:16 "upon light from Allah,"

2:18 "fearing the punishment of Allah."

2:20 Al-Dhahabi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

2:24 "He spoke masterfully and concisely."

2:26 "For there is no piety except through deed,"

2:29 "and no deed except through careful reflection upon knowledge and adherence to guidance."

2:34 "And none of that profits except through sincerity to Allah,"

2:38 "not so that it is said, 'So-and-so abandons sins through the light of fiqh,'"

2:43 "since avoiding sins requires knowledge of them;"

2:48 "rather, the abandonment must be out of fear of Allah,"

2:51 "not to be praised for abandoning them."

2:53 "Whoever adheres continuously to this counsel has indeed succeeded."

2:58 Salam Ibn Abi Muti'—or someone else—said:

3:02 "Yunus Ibn 'Ubayd (may Allah have mercy on him) was not the most frequent among them in prayer or fasting,"

3:09 "yet, by Allah, no right due to Allah ever presented itself"

3:13 "except that he was fully prepared for it."

3:16 'Umar Ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

3:21 "The pious person is bridled;"

3:23 "he cannot do everything he desires."

3:26 Dawud al-Ta'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

3:30 "Allah never takes a servant out of the humiliation of disobedience into the honor of piety"

3:36 "except that He enriches him without wealth,"

3:39 "grants him honor without a tribe,"

3:41 "and bestows upon him comfort without a companion."

3:44 Apologizing and Returning to the Truth.

3:50 Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say:

3:56 "Whoever wakes up in a state of major ritual impurity should break his fast that day."

4:00 'A'ishah and Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them) were asked about that,

4:05 and 'A'ishah said:

4:07 "The Prophet (peace be upon him) would wake up in a state of major ritual impurity and then continue his fast."

4:13 When Abu Hurairah was informed of what she said,

4:17 he said: "They know better,"

4:20 and he retracted what he used to say regarding that matter.

4:25 Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

4:28 Abdullah Ibn al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about a issue,

4:32 and he answered mistakenly.

4:34 Someone said to him:

4:37 "The ruling on it is such and such."

4:40 He lowered his head for a moment,

4:42 then said:

4:44 "Then I retract my statement willingly and humbly."

4:47 "For me to be a follower in the truth"

4:50 "is more beloved to me than to be a leader in falsehood."

4:54 He (may Allah have mercy on him) also said:

4:56 "Al-Hafiz 'Abd al-Ghani compiled a book"

5:00 "noting the errors of al-Hakim al-Nishapuri (may Allah have mercy on them)."

5:03 May Allah have mercy on them.

5:05 When al-Hakim examined it,

5:08 he began reading it aloud to the people,

5:10 acknowledging 'Abd al-Ghani's merit and knowledge,

5:13 thanking him for compiling it,

5:16 and retracting his own former views wherever the critique was correct.

5:20 May Allah have mercy on them.

5:22 'Izz al-Din Ibn 'Abd al-Salam (may Allah have mercy on him) issued a legal verdict,

5:27 but it later became clear to him that he had erred.

5:30 So he had it announced publicly throughout Fustat and Cairo:

5:34 "Whoever received a legal verdict from so-and-so stating such and such,"

5:37 "let him not act upon it,"

5:39 "for it was an error."

5:44 Condemnation of Fools and Ignoble People.

5:48 'Umar Ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) said to his companions:

5:52 "Tell me, who is the most foolish of people?"

5:55 They said: "A man who sold his Hereafter for his worldly life."

6:00 'Umar said:

6:02 "Shall I inform you of one even more foolish than him?"

6:05 They said: "Yes."

6:07 He said: "A man who sold his Hereafter for someone else's worldly life."

6:12 Wahb Ibn Munabbih (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

6:17 "When the fool speaks, his foolishness exposes him."

6:21 "When he remains silent, his inability to speak exposes him."

6:24 "When he acts, he causes corruption."

6:26 "When he leaves a matter, he neglects it."

6:29 "His own knowledge does not help him,"

6:31 "nor does the knowledge of others benefit him."

6:34 "His mother wishes she had lost him at birth,"

6:37 "his wife wishes she were without him,"

6:39 "his neighbor wishes to be far removed from him,"

6:43 "and his companion feels distress in his presence."

6:46 Sufyan al-Thawri (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

6:50 "We found that the root of all enmity"

6:53 "is doing favors for the ignoble."

6:56 Ibn al-Sammak (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

7:00 "The concern of the wise person is salvation and escape,"

7:04 "while the concern of the fool is amusement and revelry."

7:07 The Conduct of the Salaf in Debate.

7:13 Salman Ibn Rabi'ah was asked about a matter of estate division,

7:18 and 'Umar Ibn Sharahbil disagreed with him.

7:21 Salman Ibn Rabi'ah became angry and raised his voice,

7:25 so 'Umar Ibn Sharahbil said:

7:28 "By Allah, you have no right to do that; Allah Almighty revealed it thus."

7:32 So they came to Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him),

7:36 and he said: "The correct view is what Abu Maysarah said."

7:40 He then said to Salman:

7:43 "You should not have become angry when a man offered you guidance."

7:47 And he said to 'Umar:

7:49 "You ought to have spoken to him privately,"

7:52 "and not refuted him while the people were listening."

7:55 When Hatim al-Asamm (may Allah have mercy on him) entered Baghdad,

8:01 its people gathered around him

8:04 and said to him: "You are a non-Arab man,"

8:08 "yet no one debates you without you silencing him."

8:11 "For what reason is that?"

8:14 Hatim said: "I possess three qualities"

8:17 "by which I prevail over my opponent."

8:20 They asked: "What are they?"

8:22 He said: "I rejoice when my opponent is correct,"

8:26 "I feel grieved when he errs,"

8:28 "and I restrain myself from acting ignorantly toward him."

8:32 Al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

8:35 "I never debated anyone and wished that he would make a mistake."

8:39 He (may Allah have mercy on him) also said:

8:43 "I never debated anyone except with the intention of sincere advice."
