0:00 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
0:03 The life of the salaf between speech and action.
0:09 Sincere counsel, seeking consultation, and seeking guidance (istikhara).
0:15 Ma'mar, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
0:20 It used to be said:
0:21 The most sincere person to you is the one who fears Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, regarding you.
0:26 Al-Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
0:29 The believer is the mirror of his brother.
0:32 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz, may Allah have mercy on him, once sought consultation regarding some people he intended to appoint to positions.
0:37 One of his companions said to him:
0:40 You should choose those who have excuses.
0:42 He asked, "And who are they?"
0:45 He replied, "Those who, if they act justly, it is what you hoped for from them;
0:50 And if they fall short, people will say:
0:53 'Umar has surely exerted his best effort.'"
0:55 Al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
1:00 Seek guidance from Allah, and do not choose for yourself over His choice.
1:03 For how many a servant has chosen a matter for himself,
1:07 Only to find his ruin within it.
1:09 It used to be said:
1:11 Whoever is granted four things shall not be denied four others:
1:15 Whoever is granted gratitude shall not be denied increase.
1:19 Whoever is granted repentance shall not be denied acceptance.
1:23 Whoever is granted consultation shall not be denied what is correct.
1:27 Whoever is granted the seeking of guidance (istikhara) shall not be denied what is good.
1:31 Some eloquent scholars said:
1:33 It is the right of the wise person to add the opinions of others to his own,
1:39 And to combine the intellects of the sages with his own intellect.
1:43 For a solitary opinion may stumble,
1:46 And an individual intellect may go astray.
1:49 It used to be said:
1:52 Beware of consulting two types of men:
1:55 A youth infatuated with himself,
1:58 Who lacks experience with others;
2:01 Or an old man whom time has sapped of his intellect,
2:04 Just as it has sapped his body.
2:06 It was said in the scattered aphorisms:
2:09 Everything requires intellect,
2:12 And intellect requires experience.
2:15 Some sages said:
2:18 Half of your opinion lies with your brother;
2:20 So consult him to complete your opinion.
2:26 Condemning arrogance and vanity.
2:31 Yahya ibn Mu'adh, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
2:34 A sin for which I humble myself before Allah
2:37 Is dearer to me than a deed through which I show off before Him.
2:41 Abu Sulayman al-Darani, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
2:45 How can a wise person be vain about his deed,
2:48 When he should consider the deed itself a blessing from Allah?
2:52 He ought only to be grateful and humble.
2:56 Only the Qadariyyah are vain about their deeds,
2:59 Those who claim that they are the ones who perform them.
3:03 As for the one who claims that he is merely being used by Allah,
3:06 What is there for him to be vain about?
3:09 Abu 'Uthman al-Hiri, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
3:12 Despising people in your own heart
3:15 Is a disease that cannot be cured.
3:17 Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
3:21 If you fear vanity regarding your deed,
3:24 Then remember whose pleasure you are seeking,
3:27 In what bliss you desire,
3:29 And from what punishment you fear.
3:32 At that moment, your deed will seem small in your eyes.
3:36 What has been said regarding the intellect and the wise.
3:41 It is reported that Mutarrif ibn 'Abd Allah, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
3:47 No servant has been given anything better after faith than intellect.
3:52 Wahb ibn Munabbih, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
3:55 I found in some of what Allah revealed
3:58 To His prophets:
4:00 That Satan has never struggled with anything
4:03 More difficult for him than a wise believer.
4:06 He struggles with a hundred thousand ignorant people,
4:09 Mocking them,
4:11 Until he rides upon their necks,
4:13 And they are led by him wherever he wishes.
4:16 But he struggles with the wise believer,
4:19 And it becomes difficult for him,
4:21 Until he gains nothing from him.
4:24 Some sages said:
4:27 Whoever does not guard himself with his intellect against his own intellect
4:30 Will perish by his own intellect.
4:32 Ibn Muflih, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
4:36 This is a statement of the utmost excellence.
4:39 It is said:
4:41 Whoever does not let his intellect prevail over his desires,
4:45 His destruction will lie in those very desires.
4:49 It was said to Qatadah, may Allah have mercy on him:
4:53 "Who is the most enviable of people?"
4:55 He replied, "The wisest of them."
4:58 It was said, "The most knowledgeable of them?"
5:00 He replied, "The wisest of them."
5:03 From Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah, may Allah have mercy on him:
5:07 He said, "Do not judge a man's intellect by his speech,
5:12 But judge his intellect by how he handles his affairs."
5:16 Waki' ibn al-Jarrah, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
5:20 The wise person is the one who understands his affairs from Allah, the Almighty and Majestic,
5:24 Not the one who is merely clever in managing his worldly life.
5:27 Some sages said:
5:30 A wise person should not expose his intellect to examine everything,
5:35 Just as he should not strike at everything with his sword.
5:40 Ibn Jurayj, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
5:45 A person's foundation is his intellect,
5:47 And there is no religion for one who has no intellect.
5:50 The poet spoke the truth:
5:52 When a person's intellect is complete, his affairs are complete,
5:56 His aspirations are fulfilled, and his character is sound.
6:00 Some Arabs said:
6:03 The things that most assist in sharpening the intellect
6:07 Are learning.
6:09 And the clearest evidence of a wise person's intellect
6:12 Is sound management.
6:14 Ibn al-Muqaffa', may Allah have mercy on him, said:
6:17 The wise person must not belittle any error in judgment,
6:22 Any slip in knowledge,
6:24 Or any negligence in affairs.
6:26 For whoever belittles a small thing
6:29 Will likely accumulate small thing upon small thing,
6:33 Until the small becomes great.
6:35 These are but cracks caused by incapacity and neglect;
6:40 If they are not sealed,
6:42 They are likely to burst into something unbearable.
6:46 We have never seen anything
6:48 That was not brought down by a small thing that was taken lightly.
6:52 We have seen kingdoms brought down by a despised enemy,
6:57 We have seen health destroyed by a disease that was ignored,
7:02 And we have seen rivers burst forth from a stream that was underestimated.
7:07 The wise person must be cautious of an opinion for which he finds no supporter,
7:13 Even if he thinks he is certain.
7:16 And the wise person should not underestimate anyone.
7:19 The most deserving of not being underestimated are three:
7:23 The pious, the rulers, and one's brothers.
7:27 For whoever underestimates the pious ruins his religion,
7:32 Whoever underestimates the rulers ruins his worldly life,
7:36 And whoever underestimates his brothers corrupts his honor.
7:42 You will not find a wise person telling something to someone he fears will call him a liar,
7:46 Nor asking someone he fears will refuse him,
7:49 Nor promising what he cannot fulfill,
7:53 Nor hoping for what he will be rebuked for seeking,
7:56 Nor undertaking what he fears he is incapable of.
8:00 There is no wisdom for one whose worldly pleasures distract him from his afterlife.
8:06 It is not a sign of wisdom to be deprived of one's share of the world by being blind to its transience.
8:13 He, may Allah have mercy on him, also said:
8:15 Know that there is a type of caution in affairs that is called prudence,
8:20 And another type that is called cowardice.
8:23 If you can avoid a matter before you become involved in it,
8:28 Then do so;
8:30 For this is prudence.
8:32 Do not plunge into it and then fear it,
8:36 For this is cowardice.
8:38 The wise person does not wade into a river until he knows the depth of its bottom.
8:44 The concern of the salaf regarding thoughts and reflections.
8:51 Masruq, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
8:55 Whoever is mindful of Allah regarding the thoughts of his heart,
8:58 Allah will protect him in the movements of his limbs.
9:02 It was said to Sufyan al-Thawri, may Allah have mercy on him:
9:05 "When does a servant take hold of an intention?"
9:08 He replied, "When it becomes a firm resolve, he takes hold of it."
9:13 Al-Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
9:18 Beware, may Allah have mercy on you, of these vain wishes,
9:22 For no one has ever been given anything good in this world or the next through mere wishing.
9:28 Some of them said:
9:30 High aspiration is the precursor to all things.
9:33 Whoever has a sound aspiration and is truthful in it,
9:37 All his subsequent deeds and states will be sound.
