0:13 On the authority of ‘Abdullah ibn al-Sa‘di.

0:17 He came to ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, during his caliphate.

0:22 ‘Umar said to him:

0:24 "Have I not been informed that you manage some of the people's affairs?"

0:28 "And that when you are given a salary, you dislike it?"

0:32 I replied, "Yes."

0:33 ‘Umar then said:

0:35 "What is your intention in doing so?"

0:37 I said:

0:38 "I possess horses and slaves."

0:41 "I am in a good state."

0:43 "And I wish for my salary to be a charity for the Muslims."

0:47 ‘Umar said:

0:49 "Do not do that."

0:50 "For I once intended what you now intend."

0:53 "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to give me a gift."

0:58 I would say:

0:59 "Give it to someone poorer than me."

1:02 Until one day he gave me some wealth.

1:05 I said:

1:07 "Give it to someone poorer than me."

1:10 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

1:13 "If you are given something without having asked for it,"

1:17 "Then eat it and give it in charity."

1:19 Salim said:

1:21 "Because of that, Ibn ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him,"

1:25 "Would never ask anyone for anything,"

1:27 "Nor would he refuse anything he was given."

1:31 Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, was asked:

1:34 "Regarding a man who is given a gift,"

1:36 "Do you think he should accept it?"

1:38 He replied:

1:40 "The Prophet, peace be upon him, used to accept gifts and reward the giver for them."

1:46 "I believe that if he accepts it, he should reward the giver."

1:50 It is said:

1:52 "To appease the angry,"

1:54 "To win the favor of the ruler,"

1:56 "To remove grudges,"

1:58 "To ward off debts,"

2:00 "To avoid what is feared,"

2:02 "And to reconcile the estranged,"

2:04 "Nothing is as effective as gifts and kindness."

2:08 A poet said:

2:10 "The gifts people exchange with one another,"

2:13 "Generate connection in their hearts,"

2:16 "Plant affection and love in the conscience,"

2:19 "And clothe them in beauty when they are present."

2:25 The stance of the salaf regarding praise and commendation.

2:30 On the authority of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

2:34 "Praise is slaughter."

2:37 And on the authority of a man from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

2:41 From the early generation of this Ummah,

2:43 Who possessed great merit,

2:45 That whenever he was praised or commended and heard it,

2:50 He would say:

2:51 "O Allah, do not hold me accountable for what they say,"

2:55 "And forgive me for what they do not know."

2:58 Al-Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

3:01 "A man’s disparagement of himself in public,"

3:04 "Is praise for him in private."

3:07 It used to be said:

3:09 "Whoever reveals his own faults has purified himself."

3:13 Al-Rabi‘ ibn Khuthaym, may Allah have mercy on him, said to his son:

3:17 "Do not let the abundance of people’s praise for you deceive you,"

3:21 "For your deeds are yours alone."

3:25 Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

3:29 "Praise does not harm one who knows himself."

3:32 Malik ibn Dinar, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

3:36 "When a man begins to praise himself,"

3:39 "His splendor departs."

3:41 He also said, may Allah have mercy on him:

3:44 "Since I have known people, I have not rejoiced at their praise,"

3:48 "Nor have I disliked their criticism,"

3:50 "Because those who praise them are excessive,"

3:52 "And those who criticize them are excessive."

3:55 Wahb ibn Munabbih said,

3:57 And ‘Awf ibn Abi Jamilah, may Allah have mercy on them:

4:00 "It is among the traits of the hypocrite,"

4:03 "That he loves praise and hates criticism."

4:08 Jealousy and chastity.

4:12 On the authority of Abu ‘Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Qadi, who said:

4:16 "I attended the session of Musa ibn Ishaq al-Qadi, may Allah have mercy on him, in Rayy,"

4:21 "In the year 286."

4:25 A woman came forward,

4:27 And her guardian claimed 500 dinars as a dowry from her husband.

4:31 He denied it.

4:33 The judge said:

4:34 "Bring your witnesses."

4:36 He said:

4:37 "I have brought them."

4:39 One of the witnesses requested to look at the woman,

4:43 So that he could point her out in his testimony.

4:46 The witness stood up and said to the woman:

4:49 "Stand up."

4:50 The husband said:

4:52 "What are you doing?"

4:53 The agent said:

4:55 "They are looking at your wife while she is unveiled,"

4:58 "So that her identity is confirmed for them."

5:01 The husband said:

5:03 "I call the judge to witness,"

5:05 "That she is entitled to this dowry she claims from me,"

5:09 "But she shall not unveil her face."

5:11 The woman was informed of what her husband had done,

5:15 So she said:

5:16 "I call the judge to witness,"

5:19 "That I have gifted this dowry to him,"

5:22 "And I absolve him of it in this world and the Hereafter."

5:26 The judge said:

5:27 "Let this be recorded among the noble character traits."

5:34 Deliberation, reflection, and gentleness.

5:36 And the condemnation of haste.

5:40 A Bedouin testified before Mu‘awiyah, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding something he disliked.

5:46 Mu‘awiyah said to him:

5:48 "You have lied."

5:49 The Bedouin replied:

5:51 "The liar, by Allah, is the one wrapped in your garments."

5:55 Mu‘awiyah smiled and said:

5:58 "This is the reward for one who is hasty."

6:01 ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

6:05 "It is written in wisdom:"

6:07 "Gentleness is the essence of wisdom."

6:10 Among the proverbs of the Arabs:

6:13 "Many a haste leads to delay."

6:16 This is used as a proverb for a man who performs a task but does not perfect it,

6:20 Because of his haste,

6:22 So he is forced to return, undo it, and start over.

6:28 Ibrahim al-Khawwas, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

6:31 "Haste prevents one from attaining the truth."
