0:11 Moderation in worship, ease, and avoiding extremism and over-scrupulousness.

0:17 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, established a bond of brotherhood between Salman and Abu al-Darda', may Allah be pleased with them both.

0:25 Salman visited Abu al-Darda'.

0:28 He saw Umm al-Darda' looking unkempt.

0:31 He asked her, "What is the matter with you?"

0:34 She replied, "Your brother Abu al-Darda' has no interest in the world."

0:40 Abu al-Darda' came and prepared food for him.

0:44 He said, "Eat."

0:46 Salman said, "I am fasting."

0:49 He said, "I will not eat until you eat."

0:54 So he ate.

0:56 When night came,

0:58 Abu al-Darda' went to stand for prayer.

1:01 Salman said, "Sleep."

1:03 So he slept.

1:04 Then he went to stand again.

1:06 He said, "Sleep."

1:08 When it was the last part of the night,

1:11 Salman said, "Get up now."

1:14 "And pray, O brother."

1:16 Then Salman said to him,

1:18 "Indeed, your Lord has a right over you,"

1:21 "And your own self has a right over you,"

1:23 "And your family has a right over you."

1:26 "So give each one who has a right their due right."

1:29 He then went to the Prophet, peace be upon him.

1:32 And mentioned that to him.

1:35 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said,

1:38 "Salman has spoken the truth."

1:40 Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said,

1:45 "Moderation in the Sunnah is better than exertion in innovation."

1:50 And he, may Allah be pleased with him, said,

1:52 "By the One besides whom there is no god,"

1:55 "I have never seen anyone more severe against those who are over-scrupulous than the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him."

2:03 "And I have never seen anyone more severe against them after him than Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him."

2:10 He, may Allah be pleased with him, used to

2:12 Remind the people every Thursday.

2:15 A man said to him,

2:17 "O Abu Abd al-Rahman,"

2:19 "I wish you would remind us every day."

2:23 He said,

2:24 "What prevents me from doing that is that I dislike to bore you."

2:29 "I choose the appropriate times for the sermon,"

2:32 "Just as the Prophet, peace be upon him, used to choose the times for us,"

2:37 "For fear of causing us weariness."

2:40 And he, may Allah be pleased with him, said,

2:42 "Do not contend with this night,"

2:45 "For you will not be able to endure it."

2:47 "So if one of you feels sleepy, let him go to his bed,"

2:51 "For that is safer for him."

2:53 A man came to Abu Umamah, may Allah be pleased with him, and said,

2:59 "Someone came to me and said,"

3:03 "'Perform deeds like the deeds of Abu Umamah.'"

3:06 Abu Umamah said,

3:08 "And what could the deeds of Abu Umamah possibly amount to?"

3:12 "I perform the five prayers and fast Ramadan,"

3:15 "And three days of every month."

3:18 "And when the birds sing, I sing with them,"

3:22 "Meaning at the time of the pre-dawn prayer (sahar)."

3:24 From 'Umayr Ibn Ishaq, may Allah have mercy on him,

3:27 Who had met most of the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them,

3:31 He said,

3:33 "I have never seen a people more easy-going,"

3:36 "Nor less prone to extremism than the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him."

3:41 And from Abu 'Ubaydah, may Allah have mercy on him,

3:45 He said,

3:47 "I have never seen anyone more gentle in worship than al-Rabi' Ibn Khuthaym, may Allah have mercy on him."

3:54 Some of the wise said,

3:56 "These hearts have an aversion like the aversion of wild animals,"

4:01 "So win them over with moderation in teaching,"

4:04 "And balance in presentation,"

4:07 "So that their obedience may be improved and their energy may endure."

4:11 Some of the wise said,

4:13 "Beware of departing from moderation,"

4:16 "For the one who goes to excess is like the one who falls short in overstepping the limit."

4:21 The wise said,

4:24 "The seeker of knowledge and the doer of good,"

4:27 "Are like one who eats food."

4:29 "If he takes a nourishing amount, it sustains him,"

4:32 "But if he overindulges, it causes him indigestion,"

4:35 "And it may even be the cause of his death."

4:38 "It is like taking medicine,"

4:40 "Where the intended purpose is healing,"

4:43 "But exceeding the intended dose is a deadly poison."

4:48 From Makhlad Ibn al-Husayn, may Allah have mercy on him, he said,

4:52 "Allah has not called the servants to anything,"

4:55 "Except that Iblis has obstructed it with two things,"

4:58 "He does not care which of the two he succeeds with:"

5:01 "Either extremism in it,"

5:03 "Or falling short of it."
