▶ Conclusion from Al-Tabari’s interpretation | Episode (42-4) | Surat Al-Shura | Verses from (51) to (53)
I have appointed you over the army heading to Ahwaz, so march in the name of God and fight in the name of God. Whoever disbelieves in God, and if you meet your enemy from among the polytheists, call them to Islam. If they convert to Islam, then either they choose to remain in their homes and not participate with you in the war of others. They are only required to pay zakat and they have no share in the thousand. Or they choose to fight with you. They have the same as what you have and they are responsible for the same as what you owe. If they refuse Islam, then call on them to pay the tax and invite them. And protect them from their enemy, and do not burden them beyond what they can bear. If they refuse, then fight them, for God will help you against them. If they fortify themselves with a fortress and then ask you to submit to the rule of God and His Messenger, do not accept that from them, for you do not know what the ruling of God and His Messenger is. If they ask you to come down under the protection of God and His Messenger, do not give them the obligation of God and His Messenger, but rather give them your obligations. So if you are victorious in fighting, do not be extravagant. Do not act treacherously, do not mutilate, and do not kill a child
