0:01 The story of the Hajj of our Mother ‘Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her.

0:07 The weeping of our Mother ‘Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, before the Day of ‘Arafah.

0:17 When the Day of Tarwiyah arrived, the people entered into the state of ihram for Hajj.

0:21 They set out toward Mina.

0:24 Our Mother ‘Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, waited throughout the duration of her menses.

0:29 Hoping that she might become pure before the Day of ‘Arafah.

0:32 However, she did not become pure, so she wept a second time.

0:37 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, entered upon her while she was weeping.

0:42 She complained to him about her situation.

0:45 Our Mother ‘Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, says:

0:48 "The Day of ‘Arafah overtook me while I was menstruating, and I had not yet completed my ‘Umrah."

0:54 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, entered upon me while I was weeping.

0:59 He asked, "What makes you weep?" I replied, "I wish I had not set out this year."

1:06 I complained of that to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

1:11 He said, "Leave your ‘Umrah, undo your hair, comb it, and enter into the state of ihram for Hajj."

1:18 "And do what the Muslims do in their Hajj."

1:22 She did so. Jabir Ibn ‘Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with them both, said:

1:27 "Then we entered into the state of ihram on the Day of Tarwiyah."

1:30 Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, entered upon ‘Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her.

1:36 He found her weeping.

1:38 He asked, "What is the matter with you?"

1:41 She said, "The matter is that I have begun menstruating."

1:46 "The people have completed their rites, but I have not, and I have not circumambulated the House."

1:51 "And the people are going to Hajj now."

1:55 He said, "This is a matter that Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam."

2:00 "So perform ghusl, then enter into the state of ihram for Hajj."

2:04 She did so and stood at the stations [of Hajj].

2:07 Once she became pure, she performed Tawaf around the Ka‘bah and Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah.

2:13 This second weeping was different from the first.

2:17 The first weeping was due to the onset of her menses before performing the ‘Umrah.

2:23 The second weeping was due to the commencement of Hajj while she was not yet pure.

2:29 In this, there is a reminder for husbands and the guardians of women.

2:33 That they should be mindful of a woman’s psychological state if she menstruates during Hajj or otherwise.

2:38 And that they should strive to resolve the difficulty she faces due to her menses.

2:44 How should one who has not become pure before ‘Arafah act?

2:49 Our Mother ‘Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, continued waiting until the night of ‘Arafah.

2:56 She did not rush to abandon her ‘Umrah at the beginning of the day of Tarwiyah.

3:02 Rather, she waited until time grew short.

3:05 Our Mother ‘Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said:

3:09 "When the night of ‘Arafah arrived,"

3:12 "I said, 'O Messenger of Allah,'"

3:14 "'I had entered into the state of ihram for ‘Umrah,'"

3:17 "'So what should I do regarding my Hajj?'"

3:19 He said:

3:20 "Undo your hair and comb it."

3:23 "Refrain from the ‘Umrah and enter into the state of ihram for Hajj."

3:27 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, commanded her to perform ghusl for ihram.

3:32 To enter into the state of ihram for Hajj and to postpone the ‘Umrah.

3:35 Meaning, to leave the actions of ‘Umrah—such as Tawaf and Sa‘i—and enter into the state of ihram for Hajj.

3:42 What is beautiful in the biography of our Mother ‘Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her,

3:46 Is that as soon as she heard the command from our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

3:52 She would hasten to implement it without argument.

3:56 Our Mother ‘Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, says:

4:00 "I remained menstruating until it was the Day of ‘Arafah."

4:04 "And I had only entered into the state of ihram for ‘Umrah."

4:07 "The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, commanded me to undo my hair and comb it."

4:12 "And to enter into the state of ihram for Hajj and leave the ‘Umrah."

4:15 "So I did that."

4:17 This is the way of all the Mothers of the Believers.

4:21 And the way of the Companions and the female Companions.

4:24 That they respond to the command of Allah and the command of His Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

4:30 They do not evade the performance of the rites, nor do they seek out dispensations.

4:35 Rather, their eyes were fixed upon the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

4:39 They would watch what he did.

4:41 And they would do the same.

4:43 In this, there is a reminder for you, my sister pilgrim:

4:46 That your motto during Hajj should be:

4:49 The statement of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him:

4:52 "Take your rites from me."

4:55 Perhaps you will not perform Hajj after this Hajj of yours.

4:59 So let this Hajj be your only Hajj.

5:03 And let it be the accepted Hajj (Hajj Mabrur).

5:06 Do as the pilgrim does.

5:11 Except that you do not circumambulate the House until you are pure.

5:15 This is the guidance of our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

5:19 To our Mother ‘Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her,

5:22 When she menstruated during Hajj.

5:24 So the menstruating woman was forbidden from circumambulating the House while in her state of ihram.

5:29 But she was not forbidden from witnessing the rest of the sacred sites.

5:32 Rather, she was commanded to do as the pilgrim does.

5:36 And the acts of Hajj,

5:38 Are comprised of dhikr, talbiyah, and supplication.

5:42 And the menstruating woman was not forbidden from any of that.

5:46 And dhikr includes the recitation of the Qur'an.

5:50 Which is among the greatest of the pilgrim's deeds.

5:53 So the woman in ihram who is menstruating is not forbidden from reciting the Qur'an.

5:58 Nor from the talbiyah, nor from the tahlil.

6:01 Nor from supplication, nor from anything else.

6:04 Except for circumambulating the House.

6:07 So do not deprive yourself, my sister pilgrim, of reciting the Qur'an,

6:12 On the pretext that you are menstruating.

6:14 Not in Hajj, nor in Ramadan, nor at any other time.

6:18 Rather, increase your recitation of the Qur'an and your dhikr.

6:21 Seize the virtuous times and days.

6:25 And comply with the command of your Lord,

6:27 By abstaining from prayer, fasting, and circumambulating the House while menstruating.

6:31 A wise action from our Mother Maymunah, may Allah be pleased with her,

6:38 On the Day of ‘Arafah.

6:40 After the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had prayed,

6:43 Dhuhr and ‘Asr.

6:45 He headed toward the rocks,

6:47 And placed them between himself and the Qiblah.

6:50 He stood upon his camel, supplicating for a long time.

6:53 This long standing,

6:56 Made the people wonder:

6:58 Was the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

7:01 Fasting or not?

7:03 So our Mother Maymunah, may Allah be pleased with her, did nothing,

7:07 But send him a vessel of milk.

7:10 While he was standing at the station.

7:13 He drank from it while the people were watching.

7:16 By "the vessel" (al-hilab), she meant,

7:18 The milk that had been milked,

7:20 Or the container in which the milk is placed.

7:23 This action,

7:25 Occurred from her and from her sister, Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith.

7:29 As she herself narrated,

7:31 That people differed in her presence on the Day of ‘Arafah,

7:34 Regarding the fasting of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

7:36 Some of them said,

7:38 "He is fasting."

7:39 And some of them said,

7:41 "He is not fasting."

7:43 So she sent him a cup of milk,

7:46 While he was standing on his camel.

7:48 He drank.

7:49 And perhaps it was a single incident,

7:52 That occurred in the presence of both of them.

7:55 In this action,

7:57 Is evidence of their sagacity,

7:59 In discovering the legal ruling,

8:01 Through this gentle means,

8:03 Which was appropriate for the situation.

8:05 Because that was on a hot day,

8:08 After midday.

8:10 The reason for the people’s disagreement regarding the fasting of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

8:14 Or his breaking of the fast on the Day of ‘Arafah,

8:17 Was the knowledge they already possessed,

8:19 Which they had learned from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

8:22 Regarding the virtue of fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah,

8:25 And that it expiates for two years.

8:28 So they doubted,

8:29 Does this apply to the pilgrim,

8:31 As well, or not?

8:33 The cause of this doubt,

8:35 Was that they did not see the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

8:39 Eating or drinking from after the Dhuhr prayer,

8:42 Until the middle of the ‘Asr prayer.

8:45 So our Mother Maymunah settled the doubt,

8:48 And arrived at the ruling,

8:50 In a gentle way.

8:52 She sent him the milk in the cup.

8:55 When he drank it,

8:57 The people knew that,

8:59 He was not fasting.

9:02 And so, my sister pilgrim,

9:05 You can elicit the legal ruling,

9:08 And end the debate circulating in Hajj,

9:11 Or elsewhere, in a beautiful way.

9:14 You convey the legal ruling to those around you,

9:17 And instill tranquility in their hearts,

9:20 Without provoking their resentment.

9:22 A sincere woman will never be at a loss,

9:25 For a way to convey the truth to people.

9:28 It might be a question directed to a scholar,

9:31 Or a book that is distributed,

9:33 Or other such means.
