0:01 The story of the Hajj of our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her.

0:07 Asma’ bint Abi Bakr exits her state of ihram for ‘Umrah.

0:15 The Companions responded to the command of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

0:21 to exit the state of ihram.

0:23 He told them to convert it into an ‘Umrah for those who had not brought the sacrificial animals (hady).

0:27 Among the female Companions who exited ihram, having not brought the sacrificial animals, was

0:32 Asma’ bint Abi Bakr al-Siddiq,

0:35 the wife of al-Zubayr ibn al-‘Awwam.

0:38 Asma’, may Allah be pleased with her, says:

0:41 "We set out in a state of ihram."

0:43 Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

0:47 "Whoever has the sacrificial animal with him, let him remain in his state of ihram,

0:51 and whoever does not have the sacrificial animal with him, let him exit ihram."

0:55 "I did not have the sacrificial animal with me, so I exited ihram."

0:58 "Al-Zubayr had the sacrificial animal with him, so he did not exit ihram."

1:02 She said: "So I put on my clothes,

1:05 then I went out and sat next to al-Zubayr."

1:08 He said: "Move away from me."

1:11 I said: "Are you afraid that I might jump on you?"

1:15 What occurred from Asma’, may Allah be pleased with her,

1:19 was that she exited ihram and applied perfume,

1:22 and wore her beautiful clothes,

1:24 and sat beside her husband.

1:27 However, he did not exit ihram because he had brought the sacrificial animal.

1:31 Al-Zubayr feared for himself that he might commit

1:34 one of the prohibitions of ihram.

1:37 So he said to her: "Move away from me."

1:40 In this is a reminder for the woman performing Hajj

1:44 that she should not perform any action while in ihram

1:48 that affects her husband, tempts him, or seduces him,

1:51 such as holding hands,

1:54 or pressing against his body,

1:56 or any movement that could arouse him while in the state of ihram.

2:00 As for after exiting ihram,

2:02 she may adorn herself for her husband,

2:05 and she may entice him.

2:07 Fatimah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah,

2:10 adorns herself to welcome her husband.

2:13 Fatimah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

2:18 may Allah be pleased with her,

2:20 was with our Prophet during the Farewell Pilgrimage.

2:23 She was among the members of his household who had not brought the sacrificial animal.

2:27 When the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, commanded them

2:31 to convert it into an ‘Umrah,

2:33 she responded to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

2:37 Her husband, ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him,

2:41 had gone to Yemen

2:43 at the request of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

2:47 When he returned from Yemen,

2:49 he caught up with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

2:52 while he was in Makkah,

2:54 after the people had exited their ‘Umrah

2:57 and before they entered into the state of Hajj.

3:00 When his wife, Fatimah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

3:05 may Allah be pleased with her,

3:07 learned of his arrival from his journey,

3:09 she adorned herself for him,

3:11 and perfumed her tent to welcome him.

3:13 So ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib came to her tent,

3:17 and found that Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, had exited ihram,

3:21 and had put on dyed garments and applied kohl.

3:25 He disapproved of this action.

3:28 ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib says:

3:30 "I found Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her,

3:33 had put on dyed garments,

3:35 and had perfumed the house."

3:38 A wife in such a state, having prepared herself

3:42 to welcome her husband,

3:44 expects something different from what the Lady of the Women of Paradise, may Allah be pleased with her, saw.

3:51 She saw disapproval of her action on his face,

3:55 so she initiated the conversation and said:

3:57 "What is the matter with you? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

4:02 commanded his Companions, and they exited ihram."

4:05 The reason for ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib’s, may Allah be pleased with him, disapproval

4:09 was what had become firmly rooted in the minds of the Arabs:

4:12 that ‘Umrah should not be performed during the months of Hajj,

4:15 and that the pilgrim should perform only one ritual,

4:18 from which he does not exit until the Day of Sacrifice.

4:23 This is what the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, addressed

4:27 and clarified as invalid during this pilgrimage of his.

4:30 He found some hesitation among the Companions in complying with his implementation.

4:36 When ‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, disapproved of Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her,

4:41 she said to him:

4:43 "My father commanded me to do this."

4:45 But he was not convinced by that,

4:48 so he went to inquire from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, himself.

4:53 ‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, says:

4:56 "I went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

5:00 complaining about Fatimah for what she had done,

5:03 seeking a legal ruling from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, regarding what she mentioned from him."

5:09 I informed him that I had disapproved of that action of hers.

5:13 He said:

5:14 "She spoke the truth.

5:18 I am the one who commanded her to do it."

5:20 In this is the etiquette of a woman welcoming her husband,

5:24 especially if he is returning from a journey.

5:28 It also includes adorning oneself for one’s husband while traveling,

5:31 even if it is during the journey of Hajj.

5:33 In these etiquettes

5:35 lies the well-being of the spouses and happiness in both worlds.

5:40 The dialogue of our Mother Hafsah, may Allah be pleased with her,

5:45 with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

5:48 Just as the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, commanded

5:51 the people to exit their ihram

5:54 and convert it into an ‘Umrah,

5:56 he likewise commanded his wives to exit their ihram.

6:00 As our Mother Hafsah, may Allah be pleased with her, said:

6:04 "The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

6:07 commanded his wives to exit ihram in the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage."

6:11 But despite his command, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

6:14 for his wives to exit their ihram,

6:17 he himself did not exit his ihram.

6:20 So our Mother Hafsah, may Allah be pleased with her, wondered,

6:24 and said to him:

6:26 "What is the matter with the people? They have exited ihram for ‘Umrah,

6:28 yet you have not exited your ‘Umrah.

6:31 What is preventing you?"

6:33 He said:

6:35 "I have matted my hair and brought the sacrificial animal,

6:38 so I will not exit ihram until I sacrifice my animal."

6:42 Matting (talbid)

6:44 is to apply something to the hair so that it sticks together.

6:48 This question came from our Mother Hafsah, may Allah be pleased with her,

6:52 because she had learned from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

6:56 not to command them to do something while he himself does the opposite,

7:00 unless he has a specific reason for doing so.

7:04 So she wanted to clarify the secret behind his contradiction

7:07 of what he had commanded his wives and the Companions to do.

7:11 In this is a lesson for the man

7:14 that he should not command his wife to do something while he does the opposite,

7:17 unless there is a legal justification.

7:20 Just as it is a reminder for the woman

7:23 to inquire from her husband or guardian

7:26 about the actions she sees that contradict his words,

7:29 for perhaps he has a legal justification for that

7:33 which she does not know.

7:35 It is apparent from the event that our Mother Hafsah, may Allah be pleased with her,

7:40 had not heard the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

7:44 while he was clarifying and explaining to the people the reason for his refraining

7:48 from exiting his ihram,

7:50 which was that he had brought the sacrificial animal.

7:53 And she did not hear him express his wish that he had not brought the sacrificial animal,

7:57 and that he would have converted it into an ‘Umrah.

7:59 There is no surprise in that,

8:02 for the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

8:05 directed his words primarily in the gatherings of men.

8:09 Not all of the wives of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

8:13 had the same eagerness to acquire knowledge

8:15 as our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her,

8:19 who surpassed the rest of his wives in knowledge,

8:23 and no one competed with her in that except the Mother of the Believers,

8:27 Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her.
