0:01 The story of the Hajj of our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her.

0:07 Our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, began her menses at Sarif.

0:15 She had been listening to the sermon of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, to his Companions.

0:25 He was urging them to perform it as an ‘Umrah.

0:28 However, she was surprised by the onset of her menses while she was at Sarif, near Makkah.

0:34 This meant that she would not be able to perform ‘Umrah.

0:38 The time remaining until the Day of ‘Arafah was short, and menses has its own duration.

0:44 Thus, our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, realized she would not be able to perform ‘Umrah.

0:50 Even as she heard the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, encouraging his Companions to perform it as an ‘Umrah.

0:56 So she wept.

0:58 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, entered upon her while she was weeping.

1:03 He comforted her to learn the reason for her tears.

1:06 Our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, says:

1:10 "When we arrived at Sarif, I began my menses."

1:13 "The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, entered upon me while I was weeping."

1:18 He asked, "What makes you weep, ‘A’ishah?"

1:22 I said, "I wish, by Allah, that I had not performed Hajj this year."

1:27 He said, "What is the matter with you? Perhaps you have begun your menses?"

1:31 I said, "Yes."

1:33 He said, "Subhan Allah!"

1:36 "For that is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam."

1:40 "So, perform what the pilgrim performs,"

1:43 "Except that you do not circumambulate the House until you are pure."

1:47 A woman in menses, generally speaking, experiences a change in her emotional state during that period.

1:54 So how much more so during Hajj?

1:56 Especially when she desires to perform the rites with the Muslims.

1:59 And she fears falling behind them or delaying those who are with her.

2:03 That is why our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, wept.

2:07 And said, "I wish, by Allah, that I had not performed Hajj this year."

2:12 This shows the intensity of her distress at the onset of her menses.

2:17 Among the beautiful character traits of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

2:21 And his kind treatment of his family,

2:23 Is that when he saw her weeping,

2:26 He inquired about the reason for her tears and comforted her.

2:30 He said, "What makes you weep, O you?"

2:34 I said, "I heard what you said to your Companions,"

2:37 "And I have been prevented from the ‘Umrah."

2:39 She explained the reason for her tears:

2:42 That she would not be able to perform ‘Umrah.

2:45 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, asked her,

2:49 A second time about the reason for that.

2:52 He said, "What is your situation?"

2:55 I said, "I am not praying."

2:58 She used a euphemism for menses out of modesty.

3:03 The effect of this has appeared in the believing women who followed her.

3:07 For they all use euphemisms for menses,

3:10 Such as being prevented from prayer or similar terms.

3:13 This is among the refined forms of indirect speech.

3:17 And in this, O noble sisters,

3:20 Is the etiquette of using beautiful language with one’s spouse and others,

3:24 Especially regarding matters that people find unpleasant to mention.

3:28 One benefits from this hadith,

3:31 That the beginning of the menstrual cycle

3:33 For our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her,

3:36 During her journey for Hajj,

3:38 Was on Saturday, the third of Dhu al-Hijjah.

3:42 The consolation of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

3:47 To our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her,

3:50 When she began her menses.

3:52 Indeed, the treatment of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

3:56 Toward his wives, the Mothers of the Believers,

3:59 Is the most refined treatment between a husband and his wife.

4:03 And everyone who wishes to learn

4:05 The art of interaction between spouses,

4:07 Must study

4:09 The life of our noble Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

4:12 With his wives.

4:14 For this is the supreme example for spouses.

4:17 Among the beautiful examples of interaction

4:19 Between the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

4:22 And his wife ‘A’ishah,

4:24 Is what occurred in this story.

4:27 For ‘A’ishah’s weeping when she began her menses

4:30 Only occurred due to the distress she felt,

4:33 And her sadness over missing the ‘Umrah.

4:36 This reason might not be quickly grasped by men,

4:39 And a man might not pay much attention to it,

4:42 Because he sees menses as a natural matter

4:45 That happens to every woman.

4:47 And it is indeed so.

4:49 But a woman may be in an emotional state

4:52 Where she is affected by the onset of menses,

4:54 Like a woman waiting for pregnancy after her marriage,

4:57 And it is delayed for her,

4:59 So she weeps when her menses begins,

5:02 Or for any other reason.

5:04 Thus, the action of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

5:07 With ‘A’ishah

5:09 Served as guidance for husbands in the art of dealing

5:12 With a woman in such a state.

5:15 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, did not suffice

5:18 With asking her about the reason for her weeping,

5:21 Rather, he lightened the matter for her

5:23 By explaining that she was not the only one

5:26 Who is tested with this menses,

5:28 But rather all the daughters of Adam.

5:30 He said,

5:32 "This is a matter Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam."

5:36 Meaning, He has ordained it for them,

5:39 And bound them to it.

5:41 So they are worshippers through their patience with it.

5:44 "You are only a woman from among the daughters of Adam,"

5:47 "Allah has decreed for you what He decreed for them."

5:50 So the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, calmed

5:53 Her anxiety with two things:

5:55 First, that menses is a matter Allah has decreed

5:59 For women in general.

6:01 And second, that she is like them,

6:04 Subject to what they are subject to.

6:07 This is a source of comfort and solace for her,

6:10 And a relief for her worry.

6:13 How a woman in a state of ihram should act

6:17 During Hajj if she begins her menses.

6:19 After the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, calmed

6:23 The anxiety of our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her,

6:27 He moved to another dimension

6:29 In providing her with psychological comfort.

6:32 He explained to her that the onset of menses

6:34 For a woman in ihram does not harm her,

6:37 And does not affect her ihram.

6:40 He said,

6:41 "It does not harm you."

6:43 "You are only a woman from among the daughters of Adam,"

6:46 "Allah has decreed for you what He decreed for them."

6:49 "So continue in your Hajj,"

6:51 "Perhaps Allah will grant it to you."

6:54 Then the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, instructed her

6:57 On what she should do in this state of hers.

7:00 He said,

7:01 "Perform what the pilgrim performs,"

7:04 "Except that you do not circumambulate the House,"

7:07 "Until you have performed ghusl."

7:09 The guidance of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

7:12 To our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, indicated

7:15 That menses and postpartum bleeding

7:17 Do not invalidate the entire Hajj,

7:20 Except for what relates to entering the mosque,

7:23 Such as circumambulation and the prayer following it.

7:26 Our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said:

7:29 "I performed Hajj,"

7:30 "And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, commanded me"

7:33 "To perform all the rites,"

7:36 "Except for circumambulating the House."

7:39 So, O noble sisters,

7:42 A woman in ihram for Hajj or ‘Umrah, if she begins her menses,

7:45 Is only prevented

7:47 From circumambulating the House.

7:49 She is not prevented from dhikr, supplication,

7:52 Or reciting the Qur'an.

7:54 So do not make narrow for yourselves what is broad.

7:57 Instilling hope in a woman's spirit.

8:02 Among the arts of dealing with a wife

8:06 In such embarrassing situations,

8:08 Which are painful for a woman,

8:10 Is to instill hope in her spirit.

8:13 This is taken from the action of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

8:17 With our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her,

8:20 When she began her menses,

8:22 As he said to her:

8:24 "Continue in your Hajj,"

8:26 "Perhaps Allah will grant it to you."

8:29 Meaning, grant you the ‘Umrah so you may perform it,

8:32 Or grant you the reward of the ‘Umrah,

8:35 Even if you do not perform it,

8:37 Because actions are by intentions,

8:39 And you were only prevented due to a legal excuse.

8:43 And it happened that our Mother ‘A’ishah,

8:46 May Allah be pleased with her, performed ‘Umrah after the Hajj.

8:49 This is a magnificent method,

8:51 Through which the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, teaches us

8:54 How to deal with one’s wife

8:57 When her emotional state changes,

8:59 Especially during travel,

9:01 As it combines the hardship of travel

9:04 With the hardship of the event that has occurred to the woman.
