0:15 The Mawaddah Association is pleased
0:18 to present to you glimpses from the lives of the Companions,
0:22 by Abd al-Rahman Ra'fat al-Basha,
0:25 may Allah have mercy upon him.
0:27 Al-Bara' ibn Malik al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him.
0:45 He was disheveled, dusty, slight of frame, and lean of bone;
0:50 one might overlook him at first glance,
0:52 and turn away from him in disdain.
0:54 Yet, despite this,
0:56 he killed one hundred of the polytheists
0:59 in single combat,
1:01 not counting those he slew in the heat of battle alongside the warriors.
1:05 He was a brave, daring, and intrepid knight,
1:08 concerning whom the Faruq (Umar ibn al-Khattab) wrote to his governors in the provinces,
1:12 instructing them never to appoint him as a commander over any Muslim army,
1:16 for fear that his reckless bravery might lead them to destruction.
1:19 He is al-Bara' ibn Malik al-Ansari,
1:22 the brother of Anas ibn Malik,
1:24 the servant of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
1:27 If I were to set out to recount for you the tales of al-Bara' ibn Malik’s heroism,
1:31 the discourse would be long and the time insufficient.
1:34 Therefore, I have chosen to present to you one story from his heroic exploits,
1:40 which will inform you of the rest.
1:43 This story begins in the early hours
1:46 following the death of the noble Prophet and his joining the Highest Companion.
1:50 At that time, the Arab tribes began to leave the religion of Allah in droves,
1:55 just as they had entered it in droves,
1:58 until none remained upon Islam except the people of Makkah, Madinah, and Ta'if,
2:03 and scattered groups here and there
2:06 whose hearts Allah had made firm in faith.
2:10 The Siddiq (Abu Bakr), may Allah be pleased with him, stood firm
2:13 against this destructive, blind tribulation,
2:16 with the steadfastness of immovable mountains.
2:18 He prepared eleven armies from the Muhajirun and the Ansar,
2:22 bestowed eleven banners upon their commanders,
2:26 and dispatched them across the Arabian Peninsula
2:29 to return the apostates to the path of guidance and truth,
2:33 and to bring the wayward back to the straight path by the edge of the sword.
2:37 The most formidable and numerous of the apostates
2:41 were the Banu Hanifah, the followers of Musaylimah the Liar.
2:45 For Musaylimah had gathered from his people and their allies forty thousand
2:50 fierce warriors.
2:53 Most of them followed him out of tribal partisanship,
2:57 not out of belief in him.
2:59 Indeed, some of them would say,
3:01 "I bear witness that Musaylimah is a liar and Muhammad is truthful,
3:05 but the liar of Rabi'ah is dearer to us than the truthful one of Mudar."
3:10 Musaylimah defeated the first army sent against him from the Muslim forces,
3:15 led by 'Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl,
3:17 and drove them back.
3:19 So the Siddiq sent him a second army,
3:22 led by Khalid ibn al-Walid,
3:24 in which he gathered the elite of the Companions from the Ansar and the Muhajirun.
3:28 And in the vanguard of them all
3:31 was al-Bara' ibn Malik al-Ansari,
3:34 along with a group of the bravest Muslim warriors.
3:37 The two armies met on the land of al-Yamamah in Najd.
3:40 It was but a short time
3:42 before the tide turned in favor of Musaylimah and his companions,
3:46 and the earth shook beneath the feet of the Muslim soldiers.
3:50 They began to retreat from their positions,
3:53 until Musaylimah’s men stormed the tent of Khalid ibn al-Walid,
3:57 uprooted it from its foundations,
3:59 and nearly killed his wife,
4:01 had one of them not granted her protection.
4:04 At that moment, the Muslims felt the imminent danger,
4:08 and realized that if they were defeated by Musaylimah,
4:11 Islam would never rise again after this day.
4:14 Khalid rushed to his army,
4:16 reorganized it,
4:18 distinguished the Muhajirun from the Ansar,
4:21 and distinguished the Bedouins from both groups.
4:25 He gathered the men of each lineage under the banner of one of their own,
4:29 to see the performance of each group in battle,
4:32 and to know from where the Muslims were being attacked.
4:35 A fierce battle raged between the two sides,
4:39 the likes of which the Muslim wars had never seen before.
4:42 Musaylimah’s people stood firm on the battlefield
4:45 with the steadfastness of immovable mountains,
4:48 unconcerned by the heavy casualties they sustained.
4:51 The Muslims displayed such extraordinary heroism
4:54 that, if gathered, it would form an epic among the greatest epics.
4:59 There was Thabit ibn Qays,
5:01 the standard-bearer of the Ansar,
5:03 who perfumed and shrouded himself,
5:05 dug a pit in the ground for himself,
5:08 stood in it up to his shins,
5:11 and remained firm in his position,
5:13 defending his people’s banner until he fell as a martyr.
5:18 And there was Zayd ibn al-Khattab,
5:20 the brother of Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with them both,
5:23 calling out to the Muslims,
5:25 "O people, bite down on your molars,
5:29 strike at your enemy, and press forward!
5:32 O people, by Allah, I shall never speak again after these words
5:38 until Musaylimah is defeated,
5:40 or I meet Allah and present my plea to Him."
5:43 Then he charged the enemy and continued fighting until he was killed.
5:48 And there was Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah,
5:51 carrying the banner of the Muhajirun.
5:53 His people feared he might weaken or falter,
5:57 so they said to him, "We fear that we might be attacked from your side."
6:01 He replied, "If you are attacked from my side,
6:04 then I would be a wretched bearer of the Qur'an."
6:06 Then he charged the enemies of Allah with heroic intensity until he was struck down.
6:12 Yet the heroism of all these men
6:15 pales in comparison to the heroism of al-Bara' ibn Malik,
6:19 may Allah be pleased with him and with them all.
6:22 For when Khalid saw the heat of battle intensifying,
6:27 he turned to al-Bara' ibn Malik and said,
6:30 "Charge them, O youth of the Ansar!"
6:32 Al-Bara' turned to his people and said,
6:35 "O company of the Ansar,
6:37 let none of you think of returning to Madinah;
6:41 there is no Madinah for you after today,
6:43 there is only Allah alone, then Paradise!"
6:47 Then he charged the polytheists, and they charged with him,
6:50 and he began to cleave through the ranks,
6:52 wielding his sword against the necks of the enemies of Allah,
6:55 until the feet of Musaylimah and his companions faltered.
6:59 They retreated into the garden,
7:01 which became known in history thereafter as the Garden of Death,
7:05 due to the number of those killed there that day.
7:08 This Garden of Death was vast in its expanse,
7:12 with towering walls.
7:14 Musaylimah and thousands of his soldiers locked themselves inside,
7:19 fortified by its high walls,
7:22 and began raining arrows down upon the Muslims from within,
7:26 falling upon them like rain.
7:29 At that point, the brave Muslim warrior stepped forward,
7:33 al-Bara' ibn Malik, and said,
7:35 "O people,
7:37 place me on a shield,
7:39 raise the shield on your spears,
7:41 and toss me into the garden near its gate.
7:44 Either I shall be martyred,
7:46 or I shall open the gate for you."
7:48 In the blink of an eye,
7:50 al-Bara' ibn Malik sat on a shield—
7:53 for he was slight and lean of body—
7:56 and dozens of spears lifted him up,
7:58 and cast him into the Garden of Death,
8:01 among the thousands of Musaylimah’s soldiers.
8:04 He descended upon them like a thunderbolt,
8:07 and continued to fight them before the garden gate,
8:10 wielding his sword against their necks,
8:12 until he killed ten of them and opened the gate.
8:16 He bore over eighty wounds,
8:19 from arrow shots
8:21 or sword strikes.
8:23 The Muslims then flooded into the Garden of Death
8:26 over its walls and through its gates,
8:28 and set their swords upon the necks of the apostates,
8:31 leaving none within its walls,
8:33 until they had killed nearly twenty thousand of them,
8:36 and reached Musaylimah,
8:38 and struck him down.
8:40 Al-Bara' ibn Malik was carried
8:42 to his tent to be treated,
8:44 and Khalid ibn al-Walid stayed by him
8:47 for a month, tending to his wounds,
8:49 until Allah granted him recovery.
8:52 And it was by his hands
8:54 that victory was written for the Muslim army.
8:56 Al-Bara' ibn Malik al-Ansari remained
8:58 yearning for the martyrdom that had eluded him
9:01 on the day of the Garden of Death.
9:03 He continued to engage in battles,
9:05 one after another,
9:07 longing to achieve his greatest wish,
9:10 and yearning to join his noble Prophet.
9:13 Until the day of the conquest of Tustar
9:16 in the lands of Persia.
9:18 The Persians had fortified themselves in one of the impregnable fortresses,
9:21 so the Muslims besieged them,
9:23 surrounding them like a bracelet around a wrist.
9:26 When the siege dragged on,
9:28 and the hardship intensified for the Persians,
9:30 they began to lower from the fortress walls
9:33 iron chains,
9:35 to which were attached steel hooks
9:38 heated in the fire,
9:40 until they glowed brighter than embers.
9:43 They would snag the bodies of the Muslims,
9:46 and hook onto them,
9:48 and they would hoist them up, either dead
9:50 or on the verge of death.
9:52 One of these hooks caught Anas ibn Malik,
9:55 the brother of al-Bara' ibn Malik.
9:57 As soon as al-Bara' saw him,
9:59 he leaped onto the fortress wall,
10:01 grabbed the chain holding his brother,
10:04 and began to work the hook
10:06 to extract it from his body.
10:08 His hand began to burn and smoke,
10:11 yet he paid it no mind,
10:13 until he saved his brother,
10:15 He descended to the earth
10:17 after his hand had been reduced to bone, stripped of all flesh.
10:21 During this battle,
10:23 Al-Bara' Ibn Malik
10:25 al-Ansari prayed to Allah to grant him martyrdom,
10:28 and Allah answered his prayer,
10:30 for he fell as a martyr,
10:34 rejoicing in his meeting with Allah.
10:36 May Allah brighten the face of Al-Bara' Ibn Malik
10:39 in Paradise,
10:41 and gladden his eyes with the companionship of His Prophet,
10:43 Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
10:46 and may He be pleased with him and grant him contentment.
10:48 Do not appoint Al-Bara'
10:50 to lead any of the Muslim armies,
10:53 for fear that his boldness might lead his soldiers to their destruction,
10:56 said 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab.
