0:00 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
0:15 The Mawaddah Association is pleased
0:18 to present to you glimpses from the lives of the Companions,
0:22 by Abd al-Rahman Ra'fat al-Basha,
0:25 may Allah have mercy upon him.
0:27 ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl, may Allah be pleased with him.
0:47 He was in his late twenties
0:50 on the day the Prophet of Mercy proclaimed the call to guidance and truth.
0:54 He was among the most noble of Quraysh in status,
0:57 the wealthiest, and the most prestigious in lineage.
1:00 It would have been fitting for him to embrace Islam as his peers did,
1:04 such as Sa‘d Ibn Abi Waqqas and Mus‘ab Ibn ‘Umayr,
1:08 and others from the prominent houses of Makkah,
1:12 had it not been for his father.
1:14 And who, one might wonder, was this father?
1:16 He was the greatest tyrant of Makkah,
1:19 the primary leader of polytheism,
1:21 and the author of the torment
1:23 by whose brutality Allah tested the faith of the believers, yet they remained steadfast,
1:27 and by whose cunning He tested the sincerity of the certain, and they proved true.
1:31 He was Abu Jahl, and that is enough said.
1:34 Such was his father; as for him,
1:36 he was ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl al-Makhzumi,
1:39 one of the renowned chieftains of Quraysh,
1:42 and one of its most prominent knights.
1:45 ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl found himself driven,
1:48 by virtue of his father’s leadership,
1:50 to oppose Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
1:54 He showed the Messenger the fiercest enmity,
1:57 inflicted the most grievous harm upon his Companions,
2:00 and poured upon Islam and the Muslims such torment
2:03 as brought joy to his father’s eyes.
2:06 When his father led the battle of polytheism on the day of Badr,
2:09 and swore by Allah and al-‘Uzza
2:11 that he would not return to Makkah
2:13 unless he defeated Muhammad,
2:15 and he descended upon Badr,
2:17 and stayed there for three days,
2:19 slaughtering camels, drinking wine,
2:21 and having singing girls play music for him—
2:24 when Abu Jahl led this battle,
2:27 his son ‘Ikrimah was the arm upon which he relied,
2:30 and the hand with which he struck.
2:33 But al-Lat and al-‘Uzza
2:35 did not answer Abu Jahl’s call,
2:38 for they could not hear,
2:40 nor did they grant him victory in his battle,
2:42 for they were powerless.
2:44 So he fell prostrate, slain before Badr,
2:46 and his son ‘Ikrimah saw him with his own eyes,
2:49 as the spears of the Muslims drank from his blood,
2:52 and he heard him with his own ears
2:54 as he let out his final cry,
2:56 which escaped his lips.
2:58 ‘Ikrimah returned to Makkah
3:00 after leaving the corpse of the master of Quraysh at Badr,
3:03 for the defeat had rendered him unable
3:05 to retrieve it for burial in Makkah,
3:08 and his flight forced him to abandon it to the Muslims,
3:11 who cast it into the pit
3:13 along with dozens of the slain polytheists,
3:15 and heaped sand upon it.
3:18 From that day on,
3:20 ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl’s relationship
3:22 with Islam took a different turn.
3:24 For he had initially opposed it
3:27 out of zeal for his father,
3:29 but now he opposed it to avenge him.
3:31 Hence,
3:33 ‘Ikrimah and a group of those whose
3:35 fathers were killed at Badr
3:37 fanned the flames of enmity
3:39 in the chests of the polytheists against Muhammad,
3:41 and stoked the embers of vengeance
3:43 in the hearts of the aggrieved among Quraysh,
3:46 until the battle of Uhud took place.
3:49 ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl went out to Uhud,
3:52 and brought with him his wife, Umm Hakim,
3:55 to stand with the women who were aggrieved
3:57 at Badr behind the lines,
3:59 and to beat the tambourines with them,
4:02 inciting Quraysh to fight,
4:04 and steadying its knights
4:06 should their souls suggest flight to them.
4:09 Quraysh placed on the right flank of its cavalry
4:12 Khalid Ibn al-Walid,
4:14 and on their left flank, ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl.
4:17 Both polytheist knights performed
4:19 on that day a feat
4:21 that tipped the scales of Quraysh against Muhammad and his Companions,
4:25 and achieved for the polytheists a great victory,
4:28 which made Abu Sufyan say,
4:31 "This is for the day of Badr."
4:33 And on the day of the Trench,
4:35 the polytheists besieged the city
4:37 for many long days,
4:39 until ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl’s patience ran out,
4:41 and he grew weary of the siege.
4:43 He spotted a narrow place in the trench,
4:46 spurred his horse into it, and crossed it,
4:49 followed by a few men behind him,
4:52 in a daring adventure
4:54 that cost ‘Amr Ibn ‘Abd Wudd al-‘Amiri his life,
4:58 while he himself was only saved by flight.
5:02 On the day of the Conquest,
5:04 Quraysh saw that it was no match for Muhammad and his Companions,
5:08 so it resolved to clear the path for him to Makkah.
5:11 It was helped in making this decision
5:14 by the knowledge that the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
5:17 had ordered his commanders not to fight anyone from the people of Makkah except those who fought them.
5:22 But ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl and a group with him
5:26 defied the consensus of Quraysh,
5:28 and confronted the great army,
5:30 only to be defeated by Khalid Ibn al-Walid in a small skirmish,
5:34 in which some of them were killed,
5:36 while those who could flee did so.
5:40 Among the fugitives was ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl.
5:44 At that point, ‘Ikrimah was left in a desperate plight,
5:48 for Makkah had become inhospitable to him after it submitted to the Muslims,
5:52 and the Messenger, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
5:55 had pardoned the past transgressions of Quraysh,
5:58 but he had excepted a few whom he named,
6:01 and ordered them to be killed even if they were found under the curtains of the Ka‘bah.
6:05 At the forefront of these individuals
6:08 was ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl.
6:10 Therefore, he snuck out of Makkah in disguise,
6:13 and set his face toward Yemen,
6:16 for he had no refuge but there.
6:19 At that time, Umm Hakim,
6:22 the wife of ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl,
6:24 and Hind bint ‘Utbah
6:26 went to the house of the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
6:30 accompanied by ten women to pledge allegiance to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
6:34 They entered upon him,
6:36 and with him were two of his wives, his daughter Fatimah,
6:39 and some of the women of the family of ‘Abd al-Muttalib.
6:42 Hind spoke while veiled,
6:45 and said, "O Messenger of Allah,
6:48 praise be to Allah who has manifested the religion He chose for Himself.
6:52 I ask you to treat me with your kindness,
6:55 for I am a believing, affirming woman."
6:58 Then she unveiled her face and said,
7:01 "I am Hind bint ‘Utbah, O Messenger of Allah."
7:04 The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to her,
7:07 "Welcome."
7:09 She said, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah,
7:12 there was no house on the face of the earth more beloved to me to be humbled than your house,
7:17 but now I have reached the point
7:19 where there is no house on the face of the earth more beloved to me to be honored than your house."
7:23 The Messenger of Allah said,
7:25 "And even more than that."
7:27 Then Umm Hakim stood up,
7:29 the wife of ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl,
7:31 and she embraced Islam and said,
7:33 "O Messenger of Allah,
7:35 ‘Ikrimah has fled from you to Yemen,
7:37 fearing that you would kill him,
7:39 so grant him safety, may Allah grant you safety."
7:41 He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,
7:44 "He is safe."
7:45 She set out immediately in search of him,
7:48 accompanied by a Roman servant of hers.
7:50 When they had traveled far along the road,
7:52 the servant tried to seduce her,
7:55 so she kept him hopeful and stalled him
7:57 until she arrived at a tribe of Arabs,
8:00 and sought their help against him.
8:02 They bound him and kept him with them,
8:05 and she continued on her way
8:07 until she caught up with ‘Ikrimah at the seashore,
8:10 in the region of Tihamah,
8:12 where he was negotiating with a Muslim sailor to transport him,
8:15 and the sailor was saying to him,
8:17 "Be sincere, and I will transport you."
8:19 ‘Ikrimah asked him,
8:21 "And how do I be sincere?"
8:23 He said,
8:24 "Say: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,
8:27 and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."
8:30 ‘Ikrimah said,
8:31 "I have fled for no other reason than this."
8:33 While they were in that state,
8:35 Umm Hakim approached ‘Ikrimah,
8:38 and said,
8:39 "O cousin,
8:40 I have come to you from the best of people,
8:42 the most righteous of people,
8:44 and the most excellent of people,
8:45 from Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdullah.
8:47 I have sought safety for you from him, and he has granted it,
8:50 so do not destroy yourself."
8:52 He asked,
8:53 "Did you speak to him?"
8:55 She said, "Yes,
8:56 I spoke to him and he granted you safety."
8:59 She continued to reassure and comfort him
9:02 until he returned with her.
9:04 Then she told him the story of her Roman servant,
9:07 He passed by him and killed him before he could embrace Islam.
9:10 While they were at a place where they had stopped on the road,
9:13 ‘Ikrimah wished to be alone with his wife,
9:16 but she refused him with the utmost firmness.
9:19 She said,
9:20 "I am a Muslim,
9:21 and you are a polytheist."
9:23 He was filled with astonishment and said,
9:25 "A matter that stands between you and being alone with me
9:28 is a grave matter indeed."
9:30 When ‘Ikrimah drew near to Makkah,
9:33 the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to his Companions,
9:36 "‘Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl will come to you,
9:39 as a believer and a migrant.
9:40 Do not insult his father,
9:42 for insulting the dead hurts the living,
9:45 and it does not reach the dead."
9:47 It was only a short while
9:49 before ‘Ikrimah and his wife arrived
9:52 at the place where the Messenger of Allah was sitting.
9:54 Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
9:56 When the Prophet, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, saw him,
10:00 he sprang up toward him without his outer garment,
10:02 in his joy for him.
10:04 When the Messenger of Allah sat down,
10:06 ‘Ikrimah stood before him and said,
10:09 "O Muhammad,
10:10 Umm Hakim has informed me that you have granted me safety."
10:14 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,
10:16 "You have spoken the truth;
10:18 you are safe."
10:19 ‘Ikrimah then asked,
10:21 "To what do you invite, O Muhammad?"
10:23 He replied,
10:24 "I invite you to testify
10:26 that there is no god but Allah,
10:28 and that I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger,
10:30 and to establish prayer and pay the zakat,"
10:32 until he had counted all the pillars of Islam.
10:36 ‘Ikrimah said,
10:38 "By Allah, you have only invited to the truth,
10:41 and you have only commanded what is good."
10:43 Then he added,
10:45 "By Allah, you were among us,
10:47 before you invited to what you have invited to,
10:49 as the most truthful of us in speech."
10:52 Then he extended his hand and said,
10:55 "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,
10:58 and I bear witness that you are His servant and His Messenger."
11:01 Then he said,
11:03 "O Messenger of Allah,
11:05 teach me the best thing I can say."
11:07 He replied,
11:08 "Say: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,
11:11 and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger."
11:14 ‘Ikrimah asked,
11:16 "And what then?"
11:17 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,
11:20 "Say:
11:21 I call Allah to witness,
11:23 and I call those present to witness,
11:24 that I am a Muslim, a mujahid, and a migrant."
11:27 ‘Ikrimah said that.
11:29 At this,
11:31 the Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, said to him,
11:34 "Today, you will not ask me for anything that I give to anyone
11:37 without me giving it to you."
11:39 ‘Ikrimah said,
11:41 "I ask you to seek forgiveness for me for every enmity I showed you,
11:46 or any position in which I confronted you,
11:48 or any words I spoke to your face or behind your back."
11:52 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,
11:55 "O Allah, forgive him for every enmity he showed me,
11:59 and every step he took toward a place where he intended to extinguish Your light.
12:04 And forgive him for what he said against my honor to my face,
12:07 or when I was absent from him."
12:09 ‘Ikrimah’s face beamed with joy,
12:12 and he said,
12:13 "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah,
12:15 I will not spend any wealth
12:17 that I had spent in hindering people from the path of Allah,
12:20 but that I will spend double of it in the path of Allah.
12:23 And I will not engage in any battle in which I fought to hinder people from the path of Allah,
12:27 but that I will fight double of it in the path of Allah."
12:30 From that day on,
12:32 a brave knight joined the ranks of the call, active on the battlefields,
12:37 a worshiper, a night-prayer performer, and a reciter of the Book of Allah in the mosques.
12:42 He used to place the Mushaf on his face and say,
12:46 "The Book of my Lord, the speech of my Lord,"
12:49 while weeping out of fear of Allah.
12:52 ‘Ikrimah remained true to the pledge he made to the Messenger.
12:56 The Muslims did not fight a battle after his conversion
12:59 but that he fought it with them,
13:01 and they did not go out on an expedition
13:03 but that he was in their vanguard.
13:05 On the day of Yarmouk,
13:07 ‘Ikrimah rushed into battle
13:09 like one who is thirsty rushes to cold water on a scorching day.
13:14 When the distress became severe for the Muslims at one point,
13:18 he dismounted from his horse and broke the scabbard of his sword,
13:21 and plunged into the ranks of the Romans.
13:23 Khalid ibn al-Walid hurried to him and said,
13:26 "Do not do this, ‘Ikrimah,
13:28 for your death would be a heavy blow to the Muslims."
13:31 He replied,
13:33 "Leave me, O Khalid,
13:35 for you had a precedence with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
13:40 As for me and my father,
13:42 we were among the harshest of people against the Messenger of Allah.
13:45 So let me make amends for what has passed."
13:48 Then he said,
13:50 "I have fought the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in many places,
13:55 and shall I flee from the Romans today?
13:57 That will never happen."
14:00 Then he called out to the Muslims,
14:02 "Who will pledge to die?"
14:04 His cousin al-Harith ibn Hisham pledged to him,
14:06 as did Dirar ibn al-Azwar,
14:08 along with four hundred Muslims.
14:10 They fought in defense of the tent of Khalid, may Allah be pleased with him, with the fiercest fighting,
14:15 and they defended him with the most noble defense.
14:17 When the Battle of Yarmouk concluded
14:20 with that decisive victory for the Muslims,
14:23 there were lying on the ground of Yarmouk
14:25 three mujahidin,
14:27 exhausted by their wounds.
14:29 They were:
14:30 al-Harith ibn Hisham,
14:32 ‘Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi‘ah,
14:34 and ‘Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl.
14:36 Al-Harith asked for water to drink.
14:38 When it was brought to him,
14:40 ‘Ikrimah looked at it,
14:42 and said, "Give it to him."
14:44 When they brought it near him,
14:46 ‘Ayyash looked at it,
14:48 and said, "Give it to him."
14:50 When they reached ‘Ayyash,
14:52 they found that he had already passed away.
14:54 When they returned to his companion,
14:56 they found that he had also joined him.
14:58 May Allah be pleased with them.
15:00 May He give them to drink from the Hawd al-Kawthar,
15:02 a drink after which they will never thirst,
15:04 thereafter,
15:06 and grant them the green gardens of Paradise,
15:08 where they will dwell
15:10 forever.
15:12 ‘Ikrimah will come to you,
15:14 as a believer and a migrant.
15:17 Do not insult his father,
15:19 for insulting the dead hurts the living,
15:21 and it does not reach the dead.
15:23 Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
15:32 [The remaining lines are fragmentary/garbled in the source; translating as intended context:]
15:34 O poet,
15:36 praise them, for they are the best.
15:38 In their praise, how can we ever do them justice?
