So they snatched the camel's reins from his hand

and took me from him against both his will and mine.

My husband continued his emigration to Medina alone.

When my husband's clan, Banu Abd al-Asad, learned of this,

they became furious and said,

"No, by Allah, we will not leave our son with her

since you have wrested her from our kinsman!"

So they went to them and wrestled over my boy between them,

until they dislocated his arm.

Then Banu Abd al-Asad took him away,

while Banu Makhzum detained me with them.

Thus they separated me from my husband

and separated me from my son,

and my heart almost shattered from grief.

I could no longer endure the pain,

so I would go out every morning

to sit in the valley of al-Abtah,

continuously weeping until evening fell.

I remained in this state for about a year,

until a man from my clan passed by me.

He saw my suffering and took pity on me,

and said to Banu Makhzum,

"Will you not show mercy to this poor woman?

You have separated her from her husband and from her child!

What do you want with her?"

So they softened toward me and said,

"Go join your husband if you wish."

He then spoke to Banu Abd al-Asad as well,

and they returned my son to me.

I prepared my camel,

took my son, and placed him in my lap,

then set out intending to reach my husband in Medina.

I had no one from Allah's creation with me,

nor did I know the way.

When I reached al-Tan'im,

I met Uthman Ibn Talhah, may Allah be pleased with him,

who was still a polytheist at the time.

He asked me,

"Where are you heading, O servant of Allah?"

I replied, "I am heading to my husband in Medina."

He asked, "Is there no one with you?"

I replied, "No, by Allah,

none except Allah and this son of mine."

He said, "By Allah, you cannot be left alone like this!"

So he took hold of the camel's reins

and led me until he brought me all the way to Medina.

He then said, "Your husband

is in this village,"

and he returned to Mecca.

I entered Medina, and Allah reunited me with my husband once again.

During the Battle of Uhud,

my husband was wounded,

and as I was nursing him,

I uttered the statement of return (istirja')

and recited what the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had taught me:

"O Allah, reward me in my affliction

and replace it with something better for me."

Then I said to myself,

"Where could I ever find a man better than my husband?"

When my waiting period (iddah) ended,

A man like you is never turned down.

But I am a woman with intense

jealousy, and I fear that you might see

something from me for which Allah would punish me.

Moreover, I am advanced in age,

and I have dependents."

He, peace and blessings be upon him, replied,

"As for the jealousy you mentioned,

Allah will remove it from you.

As for the age you mentioned,

I have been affected by the same as you.

And as for the dependents you mentioned,

your dependents are my dependents."

So he, peace be upon him, married me,

and Allah replaced my husband

with one who was better than him:

Thus, I became one of the Mothers of the Believers

and one of the wives of the Trustworthy Messenger.

We had a dispute over the boundary of the land,
