I gave security to the fearful,

and a poet with a sensitive soul,

discerning the sweetness and bitterness of speech,

for words had a magical effect on me.

to migrate to our lands and grant him victory.

When my husband intended to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl,

That pleased me, and I left instructions for it.

“Say: He is Allah, the One!” (112:1)

A hypocrite man from Banu Ubayraq committed a theft

against a storehouse of ours where we kept food and weapons.

We followed his tracks,

and we identified the thief.

and he said,

"I will look into this."

When the Banu Ubayraq heard that,

a group of them gathered,

and they came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

these people have targeted a family of ours,

a family of Islam and righteousness,

accusing them of theft

without evidence or proof."

When I heard that,

and I wished I had parted with some of my wealth

I learned from him the hadiths concerning the tribulations that would befall the Ummah until the Day of Resurrection.

My father and I missed the Battle of Badr,

And nothing prevented us from witnessing it

Except that we had gone on a journey,

And the disbelievers of Quraysh intercepted us.

They said,

"You intend to join Muhammad."

We replied, "We intend only to go to Medina."

So they took a pledge from us

That we would return to Medina,

And not fight alongside him.

When we reached Medina,

We informed the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, of this,

And he ordered us to stay behind,

Saying, "We shall fulfill our pledge to them,"

"And seek Allah's help against them."

Later, we participated in the Battle of Uhud,

And fought alongside the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, against his disbelieving enemies,

Until they were driven back.

After the setback that befell the Muslims,

Confusion spread among the people,

And they struck my father with their swords, thinking he was with the polytheists.

I was shouting to them,

"My father! My father!"

"It is my father!"

But the decree of Allah was swifter,

And my father was killed by the swords of the Muslims.

I said to them,

"May Allah forgive you,"

"For He is the Most Merciful of the merciful."

When the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, learned of this,

He gave me the blood money for my father,

But I did not take it for myself,

And instead gave it as charity to the Muslims.

This increased my standing and virtue in the eyes of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

One day, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, asked me,

And pressed me insistently,

"Did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, count me among the hypocrites?"

"And I shall not purify anyone after you."

Then he asked me,

"Is there any hypocrite among my governors?"

I said, "Yes,"

"One."

He asked, "Who is he?"

I said, "I will not name him to you."

Shortly thereafter, 'Umar dismissed him,

As if he had been guided to who it was.

'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, used to,

Whenever a man died,

If I was present for the funeral prayer,

I witnessed the fighting at the Battle of Nahavand,

And when al-Nu'man ibn Muqarrin, may Allah be pleased with him, the commander of that army, was killed,

And the conquest of Hamadan took place,

I also witnessed the conquest of al-Jazirah,

And I settled in Nusaybin,

I participated in the conquest of Armenia and Azerbaijan with the people of Iraq.

I was alarmed when I saw the Muslims differing in their recitation of the Qur'an,

So I went to the Caliph 'Uthman ibn 'Affan, may Allah be pleased with him, in Medina,

And I said to him,

"Save the Ummah before they differ regarding the Qur'an."

So 'Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, ordered the compilation of the Mushaf.

My conversion to Islam was delayed until the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah,

When I embraced Islam during the truce,

Then I migrated before the Conquest of Mecca,

And I became one of the leaders of the Muslims.

The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saw me during the Farewell Pilgrimage,

[And permitted me] to perform 'Umrah with my sister 'Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, from al-Tan'im.

And before the two armies clashed,

I stepped out to challenge the Muslims,

My father wanted to come out to duel me,

I witnessed the Battle of Uhud thereafter,

And I was the commander of the archers in the Meccan army.

After I embraced Islam,

And in the Islamic conquests with the Caliphs after him.

I participated with Khalid ibn al-Walid, may Allah be pleased with him, in the Ridda Wars,

And on the day of Yamama, I killed seven of the senior commanders of Musaylimah the Liar's army,

Among them was Muhakkam ibn al-Tufayl,

The mastermind behind Musaylimah.

He was standing in a small opening of the fortress,

So I shot him with an arrow,

Striking his throat and killing him,

And the Muslims entered through that opening,

And killed Musaylimah and his soldiers with him.

On the day the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, passed away,

I entered upon him while he was reclining in the lap of 'Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her,

And I had a fresh siwak with me.

As a defender of Islam,

And an assistant to the Caliphs of the Muslims.

Then death overtook me near Mecca,

So I was carried to Mecca and buried there.
