So they collected my wealth for me as quickly as possible.

Perhaps I can return

And profit from the spoils of the sale."

She handed over my wealth.

When the news of this spread in Makkah,

The Muslims were devastated.

Al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) became

Broken and distressed,

Unable to stand.

He sent his servant to me

To inquire about the news.

I said to the servant:

"Convey my greetings to Abu al-Fadl,

And tell him:

'Let him clear one of his houses for me,

So I may come to him,

For the news is such that will please him.'"

Al-'Abbas jumped up in joy,

Then I met al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him),

By Allah, I left your nephew

While Allah has granted him victory in Khaybar,

And its wealth has become his

"It is forbidden for me to fight Ahmad, for I see Ahmad as having close ties to me.

And if the situation darkens and they gather against him, then Allah is undoubtedly his helper."

During the battle, I was taken prisoner.

My nephew al-‘Abbas wanted to ransom me.

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to me:

"Ransom yourself."

I said, "I have nothing to ransom myself with."

He said, "Ransom yourself with your spears that are in Jeddah."

I said, "By Allah, no one knew I had spears in Jeddah except me."

"I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah."

So I ransomed myself with them, and they were one thousand spears.

Then I went to Makkah, and Islam had settled in my heart.

I advanced to the battlefield,

weapons and were sitting down.

I said, "What makes you sit?"

"The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, [has been killed]."

my people began searching for me among the slain.

Furthermore, the polytheists had mutilated my body,

so no one recognized me,

except my sister al-Rubayyi‘, who recognized me

by my fingertips. They believed

that this verse was revealed about me and those like me:

namely, the saying of the Exalted:

﴾ who have been true to what they pledged to Allah ﴿

﴾ is he who has fulfilled his vow ﴿

﴾ and among them is he who awaits ﴿

﴾ and they have not altered ﴿

﴾ by any alteration. ﴿

I am the one who inhaled the scents,

sacrificed my limbs,

and won the rewards.
