but I have no knowledge of the way."

He said, "I will be your companion until I bring you to Madinah."

"Have you migrated for the sake of Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, and His Messenger?"

And give them (the disbelievers) that which they have spent (upon them). And it is no sin for you to marry such women when ye have given them their dues. And hold not to the ties of disbelieving women; and ask for (the return of) that which ye have spent; and let them (the disbelievers) ask for that which they have spent. and bury me beneath your feet

I embraced Islam and migrated to Medina,

and I became a scribe of the revelation for the Prophet, peace be upon him.

But Satan misled me,

and I apostatized from Islam,

and rejoined the disbelievers.

The Prophet, peace be upon him, declared my blood forfeit on the day of the conquest of Mecca,

and ordered the Companions to kill me,

even if they found me clinging to the curtains of the Ka'ba.

So I went and hid in the house of my foster brother,

When 'Uthman came,

I said to him, "O my brother,

by Allah, I have chosen you,

so keep me here,

and go to Muhammad and speak to him on my behalf.

For if Muhammad sees me, he will strike off my head,

as my crime is the greatest of crimes.

Yet I have come repentant."

When he called upon the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

so accept his pledge of allegiance, O Messenger of Allah."

A third time, he did the same,

"Was there not a sensible man among you who could have stood up to him—

when he saw me withhold my hand from his pledge—

and struck off his head?"

"We did not know, O Messenger of Allah, what was in your heart.

Why did you not signal to us with your eyes?"

He replied,

"It is not fitting for a Prophet to have treacherous eyes."

and I did not commit a sin since returning to Islam.

I participated in battles with the Prophet, peace be upon him, after the conquest,

and in the fighting against the apostates after his death.

I participated in the conquest of Egypt,

and I conquered most of Africa.

I led the first naval battle for the Muslims

against the Byzantine Romans,

where I sank more than 900 of their ships,

and inflicted upon them a slaughter the likes of which they had never seen.

I also conquered the island of Cyprus.
