"The Ansar know that I am one of the wealthiest among them.

I will divide my wealth into two halves between you and me.

and I will divorce her so that when her waiting period ends, you may marry her."

and I had been struck along with those who were struck among the Muslims.

A man from the Ansar said,

He went out, wandering among the slain,

until he found me wounded and on my last breath.

He said to me, "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sends you his greetings,

and asks how you are."

I said to him, "Convey my greetings to the Messenger of Allah,

and tell him that I can smell the scent of Paradise.

May Allah reward you on my behalf with the best reward He has ever given a prophet on behalf of his Ummah.

And convey my greetings to my people and tell them: 'You have no excuse before Allah

if any harm reaches the Messenger of Allah while you still have an eye that blinks.'"

I saw my father killed at the Battle of Badr before my very eyes,

So I went out on the day of Uhud to avenge my father,

and I witnessed every engagement with Quraysh against the Muslims.

At the Conquest of Mecca,

because of my evil deeds.

So I fled, wandering aimlessly,

fearful of the Muslims.

I boarded a ship,

and we were struck by a storm.

The captain of the ship said,

"Be sincere, for your gods will not avail you anything here."

"By Allah, this is what Muhammad calls to."

"By Allah, if Allah saves me from this,

and I will place my hand in his."

I disembarked from the ship,

On my way, I met my wife,

who had obtained a guarantee of safety for me from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

She came to bring me the good news,

and said, "I have come to you from the most kind of people,

the most righteous of people,

and the best of people.

Do not destroy yourself;

come with me to him."

So I returned with her.

When I entered upon the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

he rose to greet me joyfully,

without his outer garment on his shoulders,

and said to me, "Welcome to the rider who has migrated."

So I embraced Islam,

and I asked the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

to seek forgiveness for me for every stance I had taken against him.

He sought forgiveness for me.

"O Messenger of Allah,

I will not leave any wealth I spent in hindering the path of Islam

without spending double of it in the way of Allah,

and I will not leave any fighting I did to hinder the path of Allah

without fighting twice as hard in His way."

In the Battle of Yarmouk,

the distress intensified for the Muslims at one point,

so I dismounted from my horse,

broke the scabbard of my sword,

and plunged into the ranks of the Romans.

Khalid ibn al-Walid, may Allah be pleased with him, rushed to me

and said, "Do not do this, O cousin,

for your death would be a heavy blow to the Muslims."

I said to him, "Step aside from me, O Khalid!

I fought with my own self against the Messenger of Allah;

shall I be cowardly now?"

I fought until I was struck and fell.

I fell beside al-Harith ibn Hisham,

and 'Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi'ah, may Allah be pleased with them both.

Al-Harith called for water to drink.

When they brought him the water,

he looked at me and preferred me over himself for the water.

He said, "Give it to him."

So they brought the water to me.

I looked at 'Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi'ah beside me, and he was still breathing.

I said, "Give it to 'Ayyash."

But when they reached him,

he had already passed away.

When they returned to me,

I had also passed away.

They returned to al-Harith,

and found that he, too, had passed away.

None of us had tasted the water.

They found on my body over seventy wounds,

whether from a sword strike,

or an arrow shot.

I would answer kings on his behalf.

My trustworthiness in his sight reached such a level

that he would command me to write to certain kings,

and I would write, and he would command me to seal and stamp it,

and he would not even read it, peace be upon him, due to his trust in me.

One day, a letter came to the Prophet, peace be upon him.

He asked, "Who will answer it?"

I said, "I will, O Messenger of Allah."

So I answered it on his behalf.

Then I brought my response to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

It pleased him, and he sent it off.

This impressed 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him.

"You have hit upon exactly what the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, intended."

That remained in his heart.

When 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, assumed the Caliphate,

he appointed me over the public treasury (Bayt al-Mal).

"I have not seen anyone more God-fearing than you."

"If you had an earlier precedence in Islam,

I would not have preferred anyone over you."

The Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him,

used to borrow from the public treasury.

When his stipend arrived, I would come to him to collect the debt,

and he would pay what he owed.

Then, when 'Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, assumed power,

he kept me in charge of the public treasury of the Muslims.

He would borrow from it,

and I would collect from him just as I used to do with 'Umar.

Then I asked him to relieve me of the responsibility of guarding the public treasury.

He relieved me,

and ordered a gift for me

in the amount of thirty thousand dirhams.

I did not accept it.

"I only worked for the sake of Allah,

and my reward is with Allah."
