so that I would not fall into it.

I awoke terrified and said,

and related it to him.

the angels continued to shade him with their wings until you lifted him up."

to exact the revenge of all Quraysh upon him,

and I used to say,

"Even if not a single person among the Arabs or non-Arabs remained

except that they followed Muhammad,

But when the armies clashed

and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) dismounted

from his mule,

I drew close to him

and raised my sword to strike him with it,

but a blaze of fire flared before me

and he placed his hand upon my chest

while the Quraysh were embracing Islam man by man,

yet I still remained in polytheism.

and I helped negotiate it until it was concluded;

all the while I wished to accept Islam,

but Allah willed otherwise until His appointed time.

When we wrote the Treaty of al-Hudaybiyyah,

I was one of its witnesses.

Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) arrived

for the Compensatory 'Umrah ('Umrat al-Qada'),

and the Quraysh evacuated Mecca.

When the three days elapsed,

and said, "O Muhammad, your agreed time has expired,

for he is the most righteous and dutiful of men,

for I was a man of few words,

and I did not realize its true gravity.

But when I set out to guard my speech and my tongue,

I found that nothing was harder to manage than it.

and beloved among the people of Mecca.

When I resolved to set out for jihad in the cause of Allah,

the people of Mecca were overcome with immense grief,

and not a single one of them remained

who did not come out to bid me farewell.

I stopped, and the people stood around me weeping.

When I saw their distress,

By Allah, I have not departed out of preferring my own life over yours,

by Allah, if they have outstripped us in this world,

nor did he marry anyone whose homeland was farther than mine.

My father was Abu Sufyan,

the chieftain and grand leader of Quraysh.

My husband and I embraced Islam,

and we migrated to the land of Abyssinia

fleeing to preserve our faith.

Then my husband passed away in exile,

which caused me immense distress and grief.

Then I saw in a dream a man calling out to me, saying:

than a maidservant of the Negus came to me and said:

as a reward for the glad tidings she had brought me.

nor do I possess any clothes other than what I wear;

so I wash my garment, wait for it to dry,

and at the end of the day I go out to them."

'Umar said: "And what else do you complain of?"

They said: "From time to time, he is seized by a fainting spell,

and becomes absent from those sitting with him."

I said: "I witnessed the execution of Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) in Mecca

while I was on that day still an idolater;

Quraysh had crucified him upon a wooden post

and began severing his flesh piece by piece until he died.

Whenever I recall that scene which I witnessed,

and remember that I failed to aid Khubayb,

I tremble in awe and dread of Allah Almighty,

and that swoon overcomes me."

Whereupon 'Umar said: "Praise be to Allah, Who did not disappoint my high opinion of you!"

Sometime later, a delegation from the people of Homs came to the Caliph in Medina,

and 'Umar said to them: "Write down for me the names of your poor."

So they wrote him a list containing the names of the poor,

and included my name among them.

'Umar said: "Who is this?"

They said: "This is our governor."

He asked: "And is your governor poor?"

They replied: "Yes."

'Umar was astonished and said: "How can your governor be poor?

They said: "O Commander of the Faithful,

he withholds nothing for himself;

he spends his entire stipend upon us."

At that, 'Umar wept,

then fetched one thousand dinars,

tied them into a pouch, and sent them to me,

saying: "Convey my greetings of peace to him,

'The Commander of the Faithful has sent you this wealth,

so use it to relieve your needs.'"

The messenger brought it to me,

and when I looked at the dinars,

I began reciting: "To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return!"

And by morning, I had spent them all in the cause of Allah.

loved me and praised me.

He gave me in marriage to my maternal cousin, Abu al-'As Ibn al-Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him),

and I lived with him in happiness.

When my father (peace be upon him) was commissioned as a prophet,

I hastened to believe in him,

whereas my husband refused Islam.

Quraysh then began urging my husband to divorce me,

offering to replace me with a woman from the noblest households of Quraysh.

But he would answer them, saying:

"No, by Allah!

I will not separate from my companion,

nor would I ever want in exchange for my wife

any woman of Quraysh."

When the Day of Badr took place,

my husband went out to fight the Muslims,

and he fell into their hands as a prisoner of war.

So I sent as his ransom a necklace that my mother Khadijah, may Allah be pleased with her, had gifted me on my wedding day.

When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw it,

his heart softened with deep compassion for me,

and he interceded for my husband so that he might be released without a ransom,

and he returned the necklace to me.

He also asked my husband to send me to him in Madinah.

When my husband returned to Makkah,

he instructed me to prepare to join my father,

and he asked his brother Kinanah

to escort me part of the way,

where he would meet some of the Companions

who would take me to Madinah.

Kinanah took his bow and arrows,

and set out with me in broad daylight,

in full view and earshot of Quraysh.

The people were enraged and pursued us,

terrifying me inside my howdah

until it fell,

and I miscarried the child I was carrying.

At that moment, Kinanah scattered his arrows

and swore that no one would approach me

without him shooting an arrow straight into his neck.

He was an unerring marksman,

so the men backed off.

Then Abu Sufyan came forward

"Take her back to Makkah,

then depart with her secretly by night,

lest the people say that she

departed against the will of the people of Makkah."

with him under our original marriage contract,

because of the fall I suffered

during my migration from Makkah,

until my appointed time came

in the eighth year after the Hijrah.

The Mothers of the Believers washed my body,

his lower garment (izar), saying,

"Shroud her with this as the inner garment,"

straight against her skin beneath the shroud.

He was an excellent guardian, taking great care of me and loving me like his own son,

and I likewise loved him as a son loves his father,

on account of the immense kindness he showed me.

That was until that unexpected day arrived.

I had not participated in the military expeditions with the Prophet (peace be upon him) due to my young age,

but I watched the Muslims preparing for the expedition of Tabuk,

making preparations for a long journey.

I noticed Al-Julas holding back sluggishly from mobilizing, and I was bewildered by that.

One day, I entered upon him and heard him say,

"If Muhammad is telling the truth in what he says, then we are worse than donkeys!"

I was shocked by his statement and filled with intense anger.

I hastened to respond to him, saying,

"By Allah, O Julas, you are among the dearest of people to me and the most generous toward me,

but you have just uttered a statement that would bring harm upon you if I were to spread it,

and if I were to keep silent about it, I would betray my religion and destroy my own soul.

Truly, the right of religion is foremost in loyalty,
40:50
and I will certainly inform the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) of what you have said."

I went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and informed him of what Al-Julas had said.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) sent for him and summoned him to appear.

Al-Julas came and swore by Allah that he had never said those words,

accusing me of lying.

The people then began looking at me with suspicion,

and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) remained silent.

As for me, the blood rushed to my face,

and my eyes welled up with tears.

Thereupon, Al-Julas said,

"What I have told you, O Messenger of Allah, is the absolute truth,

and if you wish, we can swear an oath before you,

and I swear by Allah

that I did not say anything of what this boy accuses me of."

At that very moment, divine revelation descended upon the Prophet (peace be upon him),

and everyone fell completely silent.

When the state of revelation lifted from him (peace be upon him),

he recited the words of Allah the Exalted:

“They swear by Allah that they said nothing (wrong), yet they did say the word of disbelief, and did disbelieve after their Surrender (to Allah). And they purposed that which they could not attain, and they sought revenge only that Allah by His messenger should enrich them of His bounty. If they repent it will be better for them; and if they turn away, Allah will afflict them with a painful doom in the world and the Hereafter, and they have no protecting friend nor helper in the earth.” (9:74)

As for Al-Julas, trembling overtook him upon hearing the words of Allah the Exalted,

He embraced Islam sincerely at that moment, becoming a devoted Muslim,

and he returned to loving and honoring me even more than before.
