To forgo is nearer to piety. And forget not kindness among yourselves. Allah is Seer of what ye do.” (2:237)

He asked, "Which of you is the one whose voice I heard raised in the adhan?"

When 'Umar heard my adhan, he summoned me and said,

"Do you not fear that your throat might burst from the intensity of your voice?"

I went out with the Muslims to fight at Uhud,

But the Prophet, peace be upon him, sent me back due to my young age.

Afterward, I witnessed all the battles with him.

When I recovered, I went out.

The Prophet, peace be upon him, said to me,

"What would you do if your eyes were to remain as they were?"

(Meaning, if you had remained blind).

I said, "I would be patient and seek the reward from Allah."

He, peace be upon him, said,

"Then you would have met Allah, the Almighty and Majestic,

With no sin upon you,

And it would have guaranteed you Paradise."

I went out with the Prophet, peace be upon him, on a military expedition,

And I heard 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, the hypocrite, say,

"Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah,

Until they disperse from around him."

He also said,

"If we return to Madinah, the more honorable will surely drive out the meaner."

I took his words very seriously.

I went to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and informed him.

He sent for 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy and his companions,

They came and swore by Allah that they had not said it.

The Prophet, peace be upon him, believed them,

And deemed me a liar.

I was overcome with great distress because of this.

Some of my people said to me,

"What did you intend by this?

You have only succeeded in having the Prophet call you a liar and despise you."

Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed Surah al-Munafiqun.

"Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, has confirmed your truthfulness."
