and he lived with that greatness during the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah) and after embracing Islam.

Just as he was harsh against the Muslims before knowing the truth,

he was equally formidable against the polytheists after proclaiming the testimony of faith

and entering the religion of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, was truly

as Allah described the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

After embracing Islam, 'Umar became

gentle and compassionate toward his fellow Muslims,

fierce against the disbelievers,

and keen to confound and dismay them.

Among such instances was his insistence that Abu Jahl should know of his Islam,

as he was the fiercest enemy of Islam.

He searched for him in al-Masjid al-Haram

but could not find him,

so he decided to go directly to his home

and inform him personally of his conversion.

He went and knocked on his door,

so Abu Jahl came out and said:

"Welcome, O son of my sister!

What brings you here?"

'Umar replied:

"I have come to inform you that I have believed in Allah and in His Messenger Muhammad,

and affirmed the truth of what he brought from Allah."

'Umar related:

"He slammed the door in my face

and said:

'May Allah make you and what you have brought ugly!'"

'Umar rejoiced exceedingly

at having enraged Abu Jahl,

the enemy of Allah and of Islam.

'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, used to say:

"My heart softened for the sake of Allah

until it became softer than butter,

and my heart hardened for the sake of Allah

until it became harder than stone."

Among the greatest distinctions of 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him,

was the revelation of several verses of the Qur'an confirming his own views.

And what a magnificent virtue that was!

Ibn 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, said:

"Never did an issue arise among the people

regarding which they expressed an opinion

and 'Umar expressed an opinion,

except that the Qur'an was revealed in accordance with what 'Umar had said."

Among the verses revealed in agreement with the view of 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him,

is what he himself related,

"I agreed with my Lord in three matters.

I said: 'O Messenger of Allah,

if only you were to take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer!'

So it was revealed."

“And when We made the House (at Makka) a resort for mankind and sanctuary, (saying): Take as your place of worship the place where Abraham stood (to pray). And We imposed a duty upon Abraham and Ishmael, (saying): Purify My house for those who go around and those who meditate therein and those who bow down and prostrate themselves (in worship).” (2:125)

if only you were to order your wives to veil themselves,

for both the righteous and the wicked speak to them.'

So the verse of the veil (Hijab) was revealed."

“It may happen that his Lord, if he divorce you, will give him in your stead wives better than you, submissive (to Allah), believing, pious, penitent, devout, inclined to fasting, widows and maids.” (66:5)

I do not agree with the view of Abu Bakr.

For these are the leaders of disbelief

and its prominent chieftains.'

But the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, inclined toward

is making you and your companion weep?

If I find tears, I will weep,

and if I find no tears,

I will bring myself to weep on account of your weeping.'

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:

'I weep for what your companions proposed to me

regarding taking the ransom.

Their punishment was shown to me

nearer than this tree.'

And Allah Almighty revealed His judgment."

regarding the prohibition of intoxicants

and not performing the funeral prayer over the leader of the hypocrites,

to Fatimah, daughter of the Prophet, peace be upon him:

"By Allah, no one was more beloved to us than your father,

and no one is more beloved to us after your father than you."

He once entered upon the Prophet, peace be upon him,

while he was lying on a reed mat,

with a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibers beneath his head.

"I saw the marks of the reed mat on the side of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

Chosroes and Caesar live in luxury,

'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, took part in all the military expeditions alongside the Prophet, peace be upon him,

During the Battle of Uhud,

after the dust of battle had settled

and it ended as it did,

Abu Sufyan walked toward the Muslim camp

to verify the death of his opponents and adversaries

and to inspect the outcome of the battle.

He looked over the people and called out:

"Is Muhammad among the people?"

"Do not answer him."

"Is Ibn Abi Quhafah among the people?"

Allah has preserved what will bring you grief!"

They asked: "What shall we say?"

"Say: 'Allah is Most High and Most Majestic!'"

"We have al-'Uzza, and you have no 'Uzza!"

"Answer him."

They asked: "What shall we say?"

He said: "Say: 'Allah is our Protector, and you have no protector!'"

Abu Sufyan then said: "This day is in return for the day of Badr,

and war has its fortunes!"

'Umar replied: "They are not equal:

our slain are in Paradise, and your slain are in the Fire!"

and Abu Bakr and 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both,

is clear evidence of the polytheists' focused concern with these three above all others.

For they knew that they were the pillars of Islam and the foundation of its state,

and through them its edifice stood.

And the Prophet, peace be upon him, did not enter it

until every single image within it was completely wiped out.

Indeed, 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, was

an exceptional minister and counselor to the Prophet, peace be upon him,

as well as to his successor after him, Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him.

Abu Bakr held him in a regard he had for no one else;

that is why he appointed him as his successor,

after consulting the senior Companions on the matter,

and their opinion fully aligned with his.

Yet someone asked Abu Bakr:

"What will you say to your Lord

when He asks you about appointing 'Umar over us,

knowing full well his strictness?"

Abu Bakr said, "Help me sit up!"

Then he said, "Is it with Allah that you seek to frighten me?!

I shall say: 'O Allah, I have appointed over them the best of Your people.'

Convey what I have said to you to those behind you."

When al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, was buried,

and the affairs of the Caliphate were firmly settled upon 'Umar,

he discharged its duties with absolute perfection.
