0:04 Mawaddah Association presents: The Ten Promised Paradise.
0:12 Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
0:18 Love for the Companions and the Prophet's kin is a Sunnah.
0:23 By which I shall meet my Lord when He gives us life.
0:28 Love for the Companions.
0:29 Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) sat one day among his companions,
0:37 Exchanging delightful conversation.
0:40 While they were engaged in this,
0:42 Umar drifted briefly into thought, away from them.
0:46 They asked him, "What is the matter, O Commander of the Faithful?"
0:50 He said to them, "Make a wish!"
0:53 One of them said, "I wish this house were filled with dirhams
0:58 So I could spend them in the cause of Allah!"
1:01 Umar said again, "Make a wish!"
1:04 Another said, "I wish this house were filled with gold
1:10 So I could spend it in the cause of Allah!"
1:13 Umar then said:
1:15 "As for me, I wish this house were filled with men
1:20 Like Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah,
1:23 So I could employ them in obedience to Allah."
1:25 Such was Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him):
1:31 A man for arduous missions
1:34 And monumental occasions,
1:36 Whom every leader would wish to have among the ranks of his army
1:40 And at the head of his expeditions.
1:42 Indeed, what an exemplary man he was!
1:45 He never missed a battle fought by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),
1:51 Hastening to every expedition to which the Prophet dispatched him,
1:53 Or which the two Shaykhs [Abu Bakr and Umar] sent him on after his passing.
1:58 In these events, he had lofty stands
2:02 That bore witness to his courage and self-sacrifice.
2:05 Among these was what Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated regarding the Battle of Uhud.
2:12 As-Siddiq said:
2:14 "On the day of Uhud,
2:16 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was struck in the face,
2:20 To the extent that two links of his helmet pierced his cheek.
2:25 I rushed toward the Messenger of Allah,
2:30 While a man was approaching from the east, flying like a bird,
2:35 Until we reached the Messenger of Allah together.
2:40 Behold, it was Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah!
2:45 He beat me to him and said,
2:47 'I adjure you by Allah, O Abu Bakr,
2:50 Let me pull out these two links from the cheek of the Messenger of Allah!'
2:57 So I yielded to him.
2:59 Abu Ubaydah gripped one of the helmet's links with his incisor tooth
3:04 And pulled it out so forcefully that he fell on his back,
3:08 And his front tooth fell out.
3:11 Then he gripped the other link with his other incisor tooth,
3:15 And it fell out as well.
3:16 Thus, Abu Ubaydah became *ahtam* among the people—
3:21 That is, lacking his two front incisors.
3:25 He suffered pain for the sake of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him),
3:30 Yet his smile was only beautified by their loss,
3:34 To the point that it was said:
3:36 'Never was a toothless mouth seen more handsome than that of Abu Ubaydah.'
3:40 In the eighth year after the Hijrah,
3:44 The Prophet (peace be upon him) dispatched a military detachment toward the coast,
3:49 Comprising approximately three hundred men,
3:52 And appointed Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah over them.
3:57 When they were partway along the journey, their provisions almost ran out.
4:02 So how did the trustworthy commander deal with this difficult situation?
4:07 Let us listen to Jabir ibn Abdillah (may Allah be pleased with both of them),
4:11 Who was with them in that detachment,
4:15 As he describes this extraordinary event to us.
4:19 Jabir said: 'Abu Ubaydah ordered that all the army's provisions be brought,
4:25 And he collected them.
4:27 He used to ration our food to us every day, little by little,
4:31 Until he was giving us only a single date per day.'
4:37 The one listening to Jabir asked:
4:38 'And what good did a single date do you?'
4:41 Jabir replied:
4:43 'We would suck on it just as an infant sucks at the breast,
4:47 Then drink water after it,
4:49 And it would suffice us for the day until nightfall.
4:52 We continued like that until the dates ran out.
4:56 Severe hunger struck us, so much so that we ate *khabat*—
5:01 Which is the leaves that fall from trees.
5:04 Thus, that army came to be called the Army of the Leaves (*Jaysh al-Khabat*).
5:07 Then we reached the sea,
5:10 And there was a sea creature like a small mountain!
5:13 We ate from it for half a month
5:16 And anointed ourselves with its blubber
5:18 Until our bodies recovered their strength.
5:21 Abu Ubaydah took thirteen men
5:25 And had them sit in its eye socket
5:27 To demonstrate the vast size of this whale.
5:30 Then he took one of its ribs and set it upright,
5:33 Saddled the largest camel we had,
5:36 And it passed right underneath it!
5:38 We made dried meat from its flesh
5:41 And carried it back with us.
5:43 When we arrived in Medina,
5:45 We came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)
5:49 And mentioned that to him.
5:51 He said, "It is provision that Allah brought forth for you.
5:55 Do you have any of its meat with you to feed us?"
5:59 So we sent some to the Messenger of Allah,
6:03 And he took from it and ate it.'
6:06 During the blessed Caliphate of As-Siddiq,
6:10 Abu Ubaydah fought alongside the armies of the Muslims
6:13 In the east and west of the Arabian Peninsula,
6:16 Until they brought its inhabitants back into the fold of Islam.
6:20 Then As-Siddiq resolved to fight the Romans
6:23 And conquer the Levant (Ash-Sham).
6:25 He sent for four heroes among the Muslim commanders:
6:29 Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah,
6:32 Mu'adh ibn Jabal,
6:34 Shurahbil ibn Hasanah,
6:36 And Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan.
6:38 They came to him,
6:40 And he said to them:
6:42 'I am sending you toward this front—
6:45 Meaning the Levant—
6:47 And appointing you commanders over these troops.
6:49 I shall dispatch with each one of you as many men as I am able.
6:55 When you reach the land, meet the enemy troops,
6:59 And unite to fight them,
7:01 Your supreme commander shall be Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah.'
7:05 As-Siddiq then bade farewell to Abu Ubaydah
7:09 And advised him, saying:
7:11 'Listen as one who wishes to comprehend what is said to him
7:15 And then act upon what he has been commanded.
7:18 You are setting out with the nobles of the people, the prominent Arab houses,
7:22 The righteous among the Muslims, and the knights of the pre-Islamic era.
7:26 They used to fight back then out of tribal zeal,
7:29 But today they fight seeking reward from Allah and with pure intention.
7:34 Be a good companion to those who accompany you,
7:37 Let all people be equal before you in matters of truth and justice,
7:41 And seek help from Allah,
7:43 For Allah is sufficient as a Helper.'
7:45 The four armies marched toward the Levant,
7:50 Each army taking a route distinct from the other,
7:55 Passing by no village without conquering it or making a peace treaty with its people,
8:00 Until they met in the land of the Levant.
8:03 Heraclius, King of the Romans, fled to Antioch
8:07 In the farthest reaches of the Levant
8:09 And made it his headquarters.
8:11 He sent word to the Romans demanding their reinforcements,
8:14 And vast numbers came to him from across the empire,
8:17 Whereupon they began preparing to fight the Muslims.
8:21 The Caliph Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) decided
8:25 To merge the army of Khalid ibn al-Walid in Iraq with the armies in the Levant.
8:30 So he wrote to him:
8:32 'When this letter of mine reaches you,
8:34 Leave Iraq
8:36 And proceed lightly with the strong among your companions until you reach the Levant,
8:42 Where you shall join Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah and the Muslims with him.'
8:47 Thereupon, Khalid wrote to the Muslims in the Levant:
8:52 'The letter of the successor of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)
8:57 Has reached me, ordering me to march toward you.
9:00 I have prepared and made haste,
9:02 And it is as if my cavalry has already appeared before you with its men.
9:06 Rejoice in the fulfillment of Allah's promise and His grand reward.'
9:10 He wrote another letter to Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him),
9:16 In which he said:
9:18 'The letter of the successor of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has reached me,
9:23 Ordering me to march to the Levant,
9:26 To take charge of its army, and to assume command of its affairs.
9:30 By Allah, I never sought this, nor desired it, nor wrote to him concerning it.
9:36 As for you—may Allah have mercy on you—you remain in your exalted stature;
9:40 Your command shall not be disobeyed, your opinion shall not be opposed,
9:44 And no matter shall be decided without you.
9:46 For you are a leader among the leaders of the Muslims;
9:49 Your merit cannot be denied, nor can your counsel be dispensed with.'
9:55 Upon the arrival of Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) in the Levant,
9:58 He assumed command of the army,
10:01 Yet he never ceased consulting Abu Ubaydah in every matter.
10:07 Thus, Allah granted them victory, opening the city of Bosra and the rest of the Levant at their hands.
10:13 While they were conquering town after town,
10:17 News arrived that a Roman army was marching toward the city of Bosra
10:22 To reclaim it from the hands of the Muslims
10:25 And to sever the army of Abu Ubaydah and Khalid from the remaining forces.
10:30 Then another piece of news reached them, stating
10:34 That another massive Roman army
10:37 Had encamped at Ajnadayn in southern Palestine.
10:40 So Abu Ubaydah and Khalid met
10:45 And consulted one another on the matter.
10:47 The consensus was reached to head toward Ajnadayn—
10:51 To the larger Roman army—
10:53 And to write to the other armies
10:56 To gather at that location.
10:58 This was agreed upon.
11:00 A battle ensued between the Roman army,
11:03 Which numbered approximately one hundred thousand,
11:07 And the Muslim army, which numbered around thirty thousand.
11:13 The Muslims were victorious,
11:15 And the Romans suffered a crushing defeat.
11:18 As a result of that victory,
11:19 All of Palestine lay open before the Muslims.
11:24 However, Heraclius had not yet surrendered;
11:28 He still believed he was capable of defeating the Muslims.
11:33 So he assembled an innumerable host
11:36 And directed them toward the south of the Levant once again.
11:40 The commanders of the Islamic armies gathered
11:43 And consulted one another,
11:45 Agreeing to assemble at Al-Jabiyah,
11:47 From where they would march to the Yarmouk River.
11:50 Meanwhile,
11:52 a letter arrived from Medina, the capital of the Islamic Caliphate,
11:57 carrying the news of the passing of the Caliph of the Muslims, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him),
12:03 and the appointment of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) as the new Caliph of the Muslims.
12:08 It contained another piece of news that was bound to shake the army:
12:12 the dismissal of Khalid ibn al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) from the command of the Levant army,
12:19 and the appointment of Abu 'Ubaydah over the army and the entire Levant region.
12:24 When the news reached Khalid ibn al-Walid,
12:30 he addressed the people, saying:
12:32 "The trustworthy man of this Ummah has been appointed over you.
12:35 I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say:
12:39 'The trustworthy man of this Ummah is Abu 'Ubaydah
12:43 ibn al-Jarrah.'"
12:45 Whereupon Abu 'Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
12:48 "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say:
12:53 'Khalid is one of the swords of Allah, and a fine leader of his kinsfolk.'"
12:58 Thus, the army united behind Abu 'Ubaydah.
13:03 When the Muslims reached al-Jabiyah
13:07 and realized the strength of the Byzantine army,
13:10 as well as the vast numbers and equipment prepared against them,
13:12 opinions differed among them.
13:16 Some advocated retreating to the borders of 'Aqabah,
13:20 while others insisted on standing firm in their position.
13:23 Khalid ibn al-Walid said:
13:27 "I believe that if we were fighting with superior numbers and strength,
13:31 they would indeed outnumber us and be stronger than us,
13:34 and we would stand no chance against them.
13:37 But if we are fighting them by Allah and for Allah,
13:40 then I do not believe that their gathering—even if it comprised all the people of the earth—could avail them anything."
13:48 He then turned to Abu 'Ubaydah and said:
13:52 "Entrust me with the front line and leave the enemy to me,
13:56 for I hope that Allah will grant me victory over them."
14:00 Abu 'Ubaydah replied, "I have done so."
14:03 So Abu 'Ubaydah relinquished his position of supreme command back to Khalid
14:07 over the Muslim armies in the Levant.
14:10 Khalid then wrought wonders against them,
14:13 and the battle ended in a crushing defeat for the Byzantines
14:17 and a glorious victory for the Muslims.
14:20 It was the greatest disaster ever to befall the Byzantine Empire,
14:26 and Heraclius departed Antioch, saying:
14:30 "Farewell, O Syria—a farewell from one who shall never return to you!"
14:35 Jerusalem remained one of the last strongholds behind whose walls the Byzantines fortified themselves.
14:44 When Abu 'Ubaydah finished the conquest of northern Levant,
14:48 he returned to Palestine,
14:50 where 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) was besieging Jerusalem.
14:54 When Abu 'Ubaydah arrived,
14:58 the people of Jerusalem requested a peace treaty on the same terms as the rest of the Levant,
15:02 provided that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab himself sign the treaty.
15:09 Abu 'Ubaydah wrote to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab informing him of the desire of the people of Jerusalem.
15:15 'Umar responded, traveled to the Levant,
15:18 and the conquest of Jerusalem was concluded.
15:20 And so, after a long journey of jihad and steadfastness, Abu 'Ubaydah
15:29 met his predestined fate—
15:31 for every soul shall taste death, whatever the cause may be.
15:37 A plague struck the Levant, known as the Plague of 'Amwas,
15:42 and countless people perished from it.
15:45 When news of this reached 'Umar ibn al-Khattab,
15:49 he sent a letter to Abu 'Ubaydah trying to rescue him from the epidemic,
15:55 writing: "Peace be upon you.
15:58 To proceed:
16:00 I have an urgent matter for which I require your presence in person.
16:05 I adjure you, upon reading this letter of mine,
16:09 not to put it down from your hand until you set out toward me."
16:13 Abu 'Ubaydah understood 'Umar's intention,
16:16 realizing that he only wished to extract him from the plague.
16:20 He said, "May Allah forgive the Commander of the Faithful,"
16:24 then wrote back to him:
16:26 "O Commander of the Faithful,
16:28 I have understood your need for me,
16:31 but I am amidst an army of the Muslims,
16:34 and I have no desire to prefer my safety over theirs.
16:37 I do not wish to leave them until Allah decrees His command and judgment concerning me and them.
16:44 So relieve me of your directive, O Commander of the Faithful,
16:48 and leave me with my army."
16:50 When 'Umar read the letter, he wept.
16:54 The people asked:
16:56 "O Commander of the Faithful, has Abu 'Ubaydah died?"
17:00 He replied, "No,
17:02 but he is not far from death."
17:05 When the sickness—that is, the plague—spread further,
17:09 Abu 'Ubaydah stood to address the people, saying:
17:13 "O people,
17:15 this pain is a mercy for you,
17:18 the prayer of your Prophet,
17:20 and the manner of death of the righteous before you.
17:22 And Abu 'Ubaydah asks Allah to grant him his share of it."
17:28 It was not long before he was afflicted with the disease.
17:31 He said to Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him):
17:35 "Lead the people in prayer."
17:37 So Mu'adh led them in prayer
17:39 until Abu 'Ubaydah passed away
17:43 at the age of fifty-eight.
17:46 Mu'adh stood up
17:49 and delivered a sermon comforting the people, saying:
17:51 "O people,
17:53 you have been bereaved of a man
17:56 the likes of whom I have never seen among the servants of Allah—
18:00 free of rancor, purest of heart,
18:03 furthest from harm, most modest,
18:07 and most sincere toward the general public.
18:10 That man was Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah,
18:13 so pray for Allah's mercy upon him (may Allah be pleased with him)."
18:17 The people gathered,
18:18 and Abu 'Ubaydah's body was brought out to the open ground.
18:22 Mu'adh ibn Jabal stepped forward
18:26 and led the funeral prayer over him.
18:28 Then he entered his grave alongside 'Amr ibn al-'As
18:31 and al-Dahhak ibn Qays (may Allah be pleased with them).
18:34 Once they placed him in his niche and stepped out,
18:38 they poured earth over him.
18:40 Mu'adh ibn Jabal then said:
18:44 "O Abu 'Ubaydah!
18:45 I shall not praise you falsely nor utter falsehood,
18:49 for I fear incurring hatred from Allah.
18:53 By Allah, you were among those who remember Allah much,
18:57 and among those who walk upon the earth in humility,
19:01 “The (faithful) slaves of the Beneficent are they who walk upon the earth modestly, and when the foolish ones address them answer: Peace;” (25:63)
19:05 “And those who, when they spend, are neither prodigal nor grudging; and there is ever a firm station between the two;” (25:67)
19:10 “And those who, when they spend, are neither prodigal nor grudging; and there is ever a firm station between the two;” (25:67)
19:12 and by Allah, you were among the humble and modest ones,
19:17 who show mercy to the orphan and the needy,
19:21 and despise the treacherous and the arrogant."
19:25 For the Chosen One, they are the finest companions; it is stated that they have died,
19:36 in the eternal Paradise; it is stated that their honor has increased.
19:42 They are Talhah, Ibn 'Awf, al-Zubayr, alongside
19:51 Abu 'Ubaydah, the two Sa'ds, and the Caliphs.
