0:06 Presents: "The Ten Promised Paradise"
0:10 Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him)
0:17 Love for the Companions and the Prophet's kin is a Sunnah
0:22 By which I shall meet my Lord as long as I live.
0:29 "Every nation has a trustworthy custodian,
0:33 and the trustworthy custodian of this Ummah is
0:35 Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah."
0:38 With these magnificent words,
0:41 the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) adorned
0:44 the noble head of Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him),
0:47 robing him in garments of honor and distinction.
0:51 Who, then, is this Abu Ubaydah?
0:54 Let us live through his biography
0:56 and drink deeply from his traditions.
1:00 He is the revered Companion,
1:02 'Amir ibn 'Abd Allah ibn al-Jarrah,
1:05 of the Quraysh tribe, from the clan of Banu Fihr—
1:07 known as Abu Ubaydah.
1:09 He embraced Islam early, at the very inception of the Prophetic call,
1:14 and endured his share of the harm his companions suffered in the cause of Allah.
1:18 He possessed vast knowledge of the Book and the Sunnah,
1:22 was a dignified master held in high esteem among his people,
1:26 and was an expert in combat, intimately seasoned in war—
1:29 which made him a seasoned commander,
1:32 placed at the forefront of military expeditions and raids.
1:35 May Allah be pleased with him, he was
1:37 a slender man,
1:39 lean-faced,
1:40 sparse-bearded,
1:42 tall, and missing his two front central teeth,
1:45 who dyed his hair with henna and *katam*.
1:48 He had two braids—
1:51 that is, two plaits of hair—
1:53 which he wrapped and tucked behind his ears.
1:56 Abu Ubaydah
1:59 loved the Prophet (peace be upon him)
2:02 with a love that penetrated to the very depths of his heart.
2:05 This was manifest in his constant companionship with him (peace be upon him)
2:09 in every battle,
2:11 and his defending him with all devotion and strength.
2:14 The Prophet (peace be upon him) reciprocated
2:18 his love with love, and his closeness with closeness.
2:22 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked,
2:25 "Which of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)
2:29 was most beloved to him?"
2:31 She replied, "Abu Bakr."
2:33 It was asked, "Then who?"
2:35 She replied, "Then 'Umar."
2:37 It was asked, "Then who?"
2:39 She replied, "Then Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah."
2:43 It was asked, "Then who?"
2:45 And she remained silent.
2:47 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
2:50 "What an excellent man is Abu Bakr,
2:52 what an excellent man is 'Umar,
2:54 and what an excellent man is Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah."
2:58 Among the evidence showing his status with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)
3:04 was his selecting him to accompany the people of Yemen
3:07 when they came to him and said,
3:10 "Send with us a trustworthy man
3:12 to teach us the Sunnah and Islam."
3:15 So the Prophet (peace be upon him) took
3:18 Abu Ubaydah by the hand
3:20 and said, "This is the trustworthy custodian of this Ummah."
3:24 What an excellent man Abu Ubaydah was—
3:28 a devout worshipper and an ascetic!
3:30 The worldly life sought him, but he did not seek it;
3:33 it presented itself to him, yet he turned away from it,
3:36 offering whatever he possessed as provision to meet in the Hereafter.
3:40 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him)
3:44 used to observe this in him
3:46 and admire it.
3:47 When 'Umar assumed the Caliphate,
3:49 he once sent him four hundred dinars,
3:53 instructing the messenger,
3:55 "See what he does with it."
3:57 Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) distributed it all,
4:02 leaving nothing of it for himself or his family.
4:06 When the messenger informed 'Umar,
4:08 he said,
4:10 "Praise be to Allah, Who has placed in Islam those who do such deeds."
4:15 On another occasion overflowing with awe and grandeur,
4:19 demonstrating absolute detachment from worldly adornments and splendors,
4:23 the Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), arrived in the Levant,
4:28 where the commanders and notables met him.
4:31 'Umar asked,
4:32 "Where is my brother?"
4:34 They asked, "Who?"
4:35 He replied,
4:36 "Abu Ubaydah."
4:38 They said,
4:39 "He is coming to you now."
4:41 Abu Ubaydah arrived riding a camel reined with a plain rope.
4:46 He greeted 'Umar with peace,
4:48 so 'Umar dismounted and embraced him,
4:50 then said to the people,
4:52 "Leave us."
4:54 He walked with Abu Ubaydah until they reached his dwelling, where 'Umar stayed with him as a guest.
4:59 'Umar saw nothing in his house except his sword, shield, and saddle-bag.
5:04 'Umar said to him,
5:06 "You are the commander of the Levant!
5:08 Where are your worldly belongings?"
5:10 Abu Ubaydah replied,
5:12 "O Commander of the Faithful,
5:14 these are enough to reach the resting place."
5:17 He then went to a vessel,
5:19 brought out a few dry crusts of bread,
5:22 and presented them to the Commander of the Faithful.
5:25 The eyes of the ascetic Caliph welled with tears, and he said,
5:29 "The worldly life has changed us all,
5:31 except you, O Abu Ubaydah!"
5:35 Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) was not content with personal asceticism alone;
5:40 he would actively urge others to be ascetic in this world and be content with little.
5:45 He used to walk among the people saying:
5:48 "Lo! Many a person who whitens his garments soil his religion!
5:53 Lo! Many a person who honors himself is actually humiliating it!
5:57 Repel old sins with fresh good deeds,
6:02 for if one of you were to commit sins filling the space between him and the sky,
6:08 and then perform a good deed, it would rise above his sins until it overcomes them."
6:14 When the people were stricken by the death of the Prophet (peace be upon him)
6:19 and gathered at the Portico of Banu Sa'idah to choose a leader for themselves,
6:24 Abu Ubaydah took a commendable stance for which he is praised and remembered,
6:29 and which the people of virtue will never forget.
6:32 The Caliphate was presented to him, yet he refused it and returned it to those worthy of it.
6:39 For when the Ansar and the Emigrants disagreed over who should succeed the Prophet (peace be upon him),
6:46 the Ansar said to the Emigrants,
6:49 "There shall be a leader from us, and a leader from you."
6:52 The trustworthy custodian, Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him), stood up and said to them,
6:57 "O assembly of the Ansar!
6:59 You were the first to support and assist,
7:02 so do not be the first to alter and change!"
7:06 Thereupon, the people fell silent.
7:08 Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and spoke,
7:11 delivering an excellent speech that satisfied the people.
7:15 Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said,
7:18 "I am pleased for you to choose either of these two men"—
7:21 meaning 'Umar and Abu Ubaydah.
7:24 He then said to Abu Ubaydah,
7:27 "Extend your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you,
7:29 for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say:
7:34 'Every nation has a trustworthy custodian,
7:37 and you are the trustworthy custodian of this Ummah.'"
7:40 Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied,
7:43 "I would never step ahead of a man whom the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordered to lead us in prayer!"
7:50 So 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward
7:53 and pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr for the Caliphate,
7:56 and Abu Ubaydah did the same.
7:59 Then the people followed in succession, pledging allegiance to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).
8:03 And when 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was stabbed,
8:07 he said as he was drawing his final breaths,
8:10 "If Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah were alive, I would have appointed him as my successor.
8:15 If my Lord were to ask me about him, I would say:
8:18 'I appointed as my successor the trustworthy custodian of Allah and the trustworthy custodian of His Messenger.'"
8:22 In the eighth year after the Hijrah,
8:26 the Prophet (peace be upon him) dispatched 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him)
8:31 at the head of a military detachment to the lands of Bali and 'Udhrah,
8:35 during the Expedition of Dhat al-Salasil.
8:37 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) found that his enemy's force was vast,
8:43 so he sent word to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) requesting reinforcements.
8:48 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reinforced him
8:51 with two hundred of the noble leaders among the Emigrants and the Ansar,
8:55 among whom were Abu Bakr and 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).
8:59 He placed Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in command over them
9:04 and instructed him to join 'Amr ibn al-'As,
9:07 telling them to unite and not to differ.
9:10 Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) and those with him joined 'Amr.
9:15 When the time for prayer arrived,
9:17 Abu Ubaydah stepped forward to lead the people in prayer.
9:21 'Amr said to him,
9:22 "You have only come to me as reinforcements, while I am the overall commander."
9:26 Those in the reinforcement force said, "Our commander is Abu Ubaydah,
9:31 while you are the commander of your own companions."
9:33 However, Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) took a different stance,
9:39 for he carried within his chest the counsel of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),
9:44 who had said to him, "Obey each other and do not differ."
9:49 Thus, he yielded the command to 'Amr,
9:52 and 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) led the people in prayer.
9:56 Such was his biography (may Allah be pleased with him):
10:00 disinclined toward leadership despite being fully qualified for it,
10:04 preferring obedience to Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) over his own ego,
10:10 and seeking to preserve the unity of the Muslims—
10:13 thus truly becoming the trustworthy custodian of this Ummah in every sense.
10:18 Among his most prominent words rousing the passion of his troops for battle
10:24 and inciting them to strive in the cause of Allah
10:26 is his immortal saying:
10:28 "O servants of Allah!
10:30 Support Allah, and He will support you and plant your feet firmly.
10:34 O servants of Allah!
10:36 Endure with patience,
10:37 for patience is a salvation from disbelief,
10:40 a source of the Lord's pleasure,
10:42 and a refutation of shame.
10:44 Do not leave your battle ranks,
10:47 do not take a step toward them,
10:49 do not initiate combat against them,
10:52 level your spears,
10:54 Protect yourselves behind your leather shields,
10:56 meaning your armor,
10:58 and remain silent, except for remembering Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, within yourselves,
11:03 until your matter is fulfilled, Allah willing.
11:08 Abu 'Ubaydah is an exemplar of humility.
11:11 Among the manifestations of his humility—may Allah be pleased with him—
11:14 is that he said to the people of the Levant while serving as their commander:
11:18 "O people!
11:20 I am simply a Muslim man from Quraysh.
11:23 There is no one among you, whether fair or dark-skinned, who surpasses me in righteousness
11:28 but that I wish I were in his skin"—
11:31 meaning in his very hide.
11:33 He teaches us a lesson in asceticism and the fear of Allah, the Glorious—
11:38 a lesson that shall never be forgotten,
11:40 no matter how much time passes.
11:43 For he is one glad-tidings of Paradise,
11:45 a conqueror of lands,
11:47 a commander over the armies of Islam,
11:50 yet ascetic regarding this fleeting world,
11:53 taking absolutely nothing from it.
11:56 Nevertheless, he spoke with the tongue of one who fears Allah
12:00 and humbly supplicates before Him, saying:
12:03 "I wish I were a ram,
12:05 so that my family would slaughter me,
12:07 eat my meat, and sip my broth."
12:11 For the Chosen One,
12:15 the finest Companions were preserved by Him;
12:21 in the Eternal Garden, they are preserved.
12:25 He increased them in honor:
12:28 they are Talhah,
12:31 Ibn 'Awf,
12:33 al-Zubayr, along with
12:37 Abu 'Ubaydah,
12:39 the two Sa'ds,
12:41 and the two Caliphs.
