Mawaddah Association presents: The Ten Promised Paradise.
0:13
Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him.
0:17
Love for the Companions and the Prophet's kin is a established Sunnah,
0:22
By which I hope to meet my Lord when He resurrects me.
0:28
Love for the Companions and the Prophet's kin...
0:30
Here is the Saqifah of Banu Sa'idah,
0:33
Where the people gathered to deliberate over a momentous matter:
0:36
The matter of the Caliphate.
0:39
The Companions differed as to who should be the Caliph over them after the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
0:46
The Ansar said, "Let there be a leader from among us, and a leader from among you."
0:51
But Abu Bakr said, "No, rather we are the leaders and you are the viziers;
0:56
They [Quraysh] hold the most central dwelling among the Arabs and the noblest lineages.
1:01
So pledge allegiance either to 'Umar or to Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah."
1:05
'Umar replied, "Rather, we pledge allegiance to you!
1:09
For you are our master, the best of us, and the most beloved of us to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him."
1:16
So 'Umar took his hand and pledged allegiance to him, and the people pledged allegiance to him.
1:20
Yes, as-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, was given the pledge of Caliphate,
1:25
And who could be more deserving of it than him?
1:28
He was the strong and trustworthy, the primary vizier of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
1:35
And the object of his trust and choice.
1:38
Then Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, stood up
1:41
And delivered a sermon to the people, saying after praising and glorifying Allah:
1:46
"O people!
1:48
I have been appointed as your leader, though I am not the best among you.
1:51
If I do well, then assist me; and if I do wrong, then set me straight.
1:56
Truthfulness is a sacred trust, and lying is betrayal.
2:00
The weak among you is strong in my sight until I secure his right for him,
2:05
And the strong among you is weak in my sight until I take what is due from him.
2:11
No people ever abandon jihad in the cause of Allah
2:14
Except that Allah strikes them with humiliation;
2:17
Nor does immorality ever spread among a people
2:19
Except that Allah afflicts them all with tribulation.
2:22
Obey me so long as I obey Allah and His Messenger;
2:26
But if I disobey Allah and His Messenger, then you owe me no obedience."
2:31
Various factions of the Arabs apostatized and withheld the zakat after the death of the Prophet, peace be upon him,
2:39
Yet Allah kept firm the people of the two cities:
2:42
Mecca and Medina,
2:44
As well as the people of at-Ta'if,
2:46
Along with a few scattered individuals here and there.
2:48
Thus the extraordinary character of Abu Bakr shone forth—
2:51
The character of a courageous leader
2:54
Who was nurtured in the prophetic school of Muhammad
2:57
And was its most distinguished student.
3:00
For the very first command he issued
3:03
Was the dispatch of the army of Usamah, may Allah be pleased with him,
3:06
That very army which the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had ordered.
3:11
The people spoke to him regarding that,
3:14
Fearing that Medina would be left undefended
3:15
And become an easy target for its enemies.
3:18
But he declared, "By Allah, even if dogs were to drag the anklets of the women of Medina,
3:24
I would never turn back an army dispatched by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him!
3:30
Do you command me to be the first to untie a knot tied by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him?"
3:37
He also ordered the fighting against the apostates
3:40
And against anyone who differentiated between prayer and zakat.
3:42
Some of the Companions objected, saying,
3:45
"How can we fight them when they are Muslims?"
3:48
Abu Bakr responded,
3:50
"That I should fall from the sky to the earth and be snatched away by birds
3:54
Is dearer to me than agreeing with you on this view!"
3:58
And he said to them, "By Allah, even if all of you abandon me,
4:03
I will fight them alone until my neck is severed!
4:07
Even if they withhold from me a single hobbling cord [of zakat], I will wage jihad against them over it!
4:10
Or do you doubt that the promise of Allah is true?"
4:14
Thus, Allah preserved the integrity of Islam through this stance of as-Siddiq.
4:20
As-Siddiq ordered Usamah's army to march
4:23
Toward its objective that had been designated by the Prophet, peace be upon him, before his demise.
4:29
He ordered guards to be stationed around Medina,
4:32
And Abu Bakr set out walking alongside the army while Usamah was riding.
4:37
Usamah said to him,
4:38
"O successor of the Messenger of Allah, by Allah, you will either ride or I will dismount!"
4:44
He replied, "By Allah, you shall not dismount, and by Allah, I shall not ride!
4:50
What harm is there for me to get my feet dusty in the cause of Allah for an hour?"
4:54
The departure of the army at that moment proved to be of the utmost strategic benefit,
5:00
For they did not pass by any Arab clan
5:03
Except that the clan was awestruck by them and said,
5:05
"Had these people not possessed great strength,
5:08
The likes of these soldiers would never have departed from their midst!
5:11
Let us leave them alone until they engage the Byzantines:
5:14
If the Byzantines are victorious, they will have spared us the burden of fighting them;
5:18
And if Usamah is victorious, then Islam has firmly prevailed."
5:22
Indeed, Usamah's army was victorious,
5:26
And they returned safe and sound, and Islam stood firm.
5:30
During the absence of Usamah's army—
5:32
During the absence of Usamah's army from Medina,
5:36
When most of the Companions were with him—
5:39
Delegations came to Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, in Medina,
5:44
Asking him to exempt them from zakat.
5:48
But he refused their demand,
5:50
So they returned harboring ill intentions.
5:53
Then the rightly-guided Caliph,
5:55
Having read treachery in the faces of those people,
5:58
Perceived their baseness,
5:59
And discerned their malicious intent,
6:02
Said to his companions:
6:04
"The land around you is in disbelief,
6:06
And their delegation has seen how few you are.
6:09
You do not know
6:11
Whether you will be attacked by night or by day,
6:14
And their nearest forces are merely a postal stage away from you.
6:17
These people had hoped that we would accept their terms and make a truce with them,
6:22
But we have rejected their demands
6:24
And repudiated their treaty.
6:27
So be prepared and get ready!"
6:29
As-Siddiq devised a tightly coordinated defensive plan:
6:34
He instructed the people of Medina to spend the night in the Mosque
6:38
So they would be in complete readiness to defend,
6:42
And he organized guards stationed at the mountain passes of Medina,
6:47
Keeping watch around it through the night
6:49
To repel any incoming raid.
6:52
The intuition of as-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, proved true:
6:55
Three days after the return of the apostate delegations,
7:00
Having made sure that Usamah's army was far from Medina,
7:05
Some tribes raided Medina by night,
7:08
Leaving part of their force behind at Dhu Husa,
7:11
A place near Medina,
7:14
To serve as rear support and reinforcements.
7:17
The guards at the mountain passes noticed them
7:20
And sent word to as-Siddiq.
7:22
He sent word back to them: "Hold your positions,"
7:26
Which they did.
7:28
Then he marched out toward the enemy with the people from the Mosque,
7:31
Causing the enemy to scatter.
7:33
The Muslims pursued them on their camels
7:36
Until they reached Dhu Husa,
7:38
Where the enemy reinforcements ambushed them
7:40
And rolled inflated skin bags before the camels' faces—
7:43
These were inflated butter-skins,
7:46
Which are the most terrifying things to camels.
7:49
The Muslims' camels bolted while the men were upon them,
7:52
And they lost control of their reins
7:55
Until the camels carried them back into Medina.
7:58
Yet not a single Muslim was thrown or harmed.
8:01
The enemy presumed the Muslims were weakened,
8:04
So they sent the news to their fellow apostates,
8:08
Who rushed to join them,
8:10
Unaware of the decree Allah had willed against them.
8:16
Abu Bakr spent that night preparing;
8:19
He mobilized the people,
8:20
Then set out on foot that very night,
8:23
With an-Nu'man ibn Muqarrin commanding the right flank,
8:26
'Abdullah ibn Muqarrin commanding the left flank,
8:30
Suwayd ibn Muqarrin commanding the rearguard,
8:33
Accompanied by the camel-riders.
8:35
Dawn did not break
8:37
Before they and the enemy stood on the same battlefield.
8:40
The treacherous enemy was caught completely by surprise
8:43
As the swords of the Muslims struck through their ranks.
8:47
By the mid-morning of that day,
8:50
The enemy had turned and fled,
8:53
And the Muslims pursued them until they reached Dhu al-Qassah.
8:57
There, Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, left an-Nu'man ibn Muqarrin
9:02
Along with a detachment of Muslims,
9:05
And returned with the rest of the people to Medina.
9:08
Then as-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, resolved fearlessly to fight the apostates:
9:14
He tied eleven battle standards under the command of Khalid and the sincere heroes,
9:21
Ordering them to eliminate the apostates
9:24
Across all regions of the Arabian Peninsula.
9:27
Among the instructions as-Siddiq gave to these armies, he said:
9:32
"O people!
9:34
Halt, for I give you ten admonitions,
9:36
So memorize them from me:
9:38
Do not betray, do not embezzle spoils of war,
9:40
Do not act treacherously, do not mutilate the dead,
9:43
Do not kill a young child, an old man, or a woman,
9:48
Do not uproot palm trees nor burn them,
9:51
Do not cut down a fruit-bearing tree,
9:54
And do not slaughter a sheep, a cow, or a camel except for food.
10:00
You will surely pass by people who have devoted themselves to monasteries;
10:05
Leave them to that which they have devoted themselves."
10:08
The army dispatched by Abu Bakr marched under the command of Khalid ibn al-Walid
10:15
To fight Musaylimah the Liar.
10:18
The two opposing forces clashed
10:20
And fought fiercely at al-Yamamah,
10:24
Until Allah extinguished the sedition of Musaylimah
10:27
By the sword of Khalid and those with him.
10:30
During that battle, many of the Companions who were memorizers of the Qur'an were martyred—
10:35
Said to be seven hundred, or even more.
10:39
Thus began the consideration to compile the Qur'an before the remaining memorizers were killed,
10:45
Which will be the opening topic of our next session, Allah willing.
11:06
[Chant:] They are the distinguished men:
11:09
They are Talhah,
11:11
Ibn 'Awf,
11:14
Az-Zubayr,
11:17
Abu 'Ubaydah,
11:19
The two Sa'ds, and the Caliphs.
