As they had only set out in pursuit of the trade caravan,

When the confrontation with the polytheists became inevitable,

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) consulted his companions on the matter,

Especially the Ansar, who had pledged allegiance to support and protect him in Medina.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was delighted by his words,

And prayed for goodness for him.

Then Umar, al-Miqdad, and Sa'd ibn Mu'adh spoke after him,

So the face of the Prophet (peace be upon him) beamed with joy, and he said:

"March forth and rejoice,

For Allah Almighty has promised me one of the two parties.

By Allah, it is as if I am now looking at the deathplaces of the people!"

Then an arbor (a shelter) was built for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) at Badr,

And Abu Bakr al-Siddiq was with him inside it;

None other was with him.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) continued earnestly imploring his Lord for the promised victory,

"O Allah, if this small band of Muslims is destroyed today, You will not be worshipped!"

He persisted in humble supplication until his cloak fell from his shoulders.

Saying, "Sufficient is your supplication, O Messenger of Allah!"

You have persistently implored your Lord,

And Allah will surely fulfill for you what He promised you."

Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) momentarily dozed off while in the shelter,

"Rejoice, O Abu Bakr!

The victory of Allah has come to you.

Here is Gabriel holding the reins of a horse, leading it through the dust of battle."

And the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him—

May Allah be pleased with them both:

"With one of you is Gabriel,

And with the other is Michael."

And on the Day of Uhud,

At the critical moment when people scattered away from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him),

And the rumor spread that the Prophet (peace be upon him) had been killed,

Al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) charged forth like a lion, cutting through the ranks,

Disregarding all mortal perils.

He was the first to reach him, ready to ransom him with his own soul and body,

His state declaring:

"There is no good in life if the Messenger of Allah is pricked by a thorn!"

And in the Hour of Difficulty on the Day of Tabuk,

The banner of the Muslims was in the hands of al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).

And on the Day of Hunayn,

He did not abandon his post beside the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him),

Despite the people fleeing from him,

Except for a tiny few who stood firm until Allah decreed victory for them.

Say the same of all the battles and every critical situation,

Where al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was the trusted minister and advisor,

The steadfast arm and supporter.

He never harbored fear in his position beside the Prophet (peace be upon him),

Despite being the primary target

For every enemy lying in wait against this religion.

And when the Prophet (peace be upon him) fell ill with the illness in which he passed away,

He said, "Command Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."

And he did not approve of anyone leading them in their prayer except Abu Bakr.

And the Prophet (peace be upon him) once said during his final days:

"Allah gave a servant the choice between this worldly life and that which is with Him,

And that servant chose that which is with Allah."

Thereupon Abu Bakr wept,

And the Companions wondered at his weeping;

For the Messenger of Allah was the servant given the choice,

And Abu Bakr was the most knowledgeable among them concerning the Prophet (peace be upon him).

And in the most distressful and difficult moment this world has ever known,

On the day the earth bid farewell to its safety,

And its light departed from it,

Leaving everything in deep darkness;

On the day hearts became estrangingly bewildered, faces turned pale,

Eyes shed tears, and minds were overwhelmed with grief

At the farewell of the beloved Prophet (peace be upon him)—

During that time, Medina was in profound turmoil and agitation;

Its people were deeply shaken, becoming utterly bewildered and disoriented,

Until al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived.

He saw the state of the people as such,

And proved to be the man of the hour.

He entered upon the Prophet (peace be upon him)

While he lay covered in the room of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her).

He uncovered his face,

Kissed that pure forehead, and said:

"May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah!

You were noble in life and noble in death.

By Allah, Allah will never combine two deaths upon you;

As for the death decreed for you, you have now tasted it."

Then he went out to the people and said:

"O people! Whoever worshipped Muhammad,

Muhammad has indeed died;
6:36
But whoever worships Allah, Allah is Ever-Living and does not die."

Then he recited His Almighty saying:

And the souls of the people were instantly tranquilized.

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said:

"By Allah, it was as if the people did not know

That Allah had revealed this verse
