0:13 'Uthman ibn 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him).

0:17 Loving the Companions and the Prophet's kin is a Sunnah—

0:22 With which I shall meet my Lord as long as I live.

0:27 Loving the Companions and the Prophet's kin.

0:30 Modesty is a noble character trait,

0:32 And it brings nothing but good.

0:35 The most sincerely modest of this Ummah

0:38 Is 'Uthman ibn 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him),

0:41 As informed by the Truthful, the Verified, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

0:46 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates

0:49 That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)

0:53 Was lying down in his home

0:55 With his shins uncovered.

0:57 Abu Bakr asked permission to enter,

0:59 And he gave him permission

1:00 To enter while he remained in that state,

1:02 And they conversed.

1:04 Then 'Umar asked permission to enter,

1:06 And he gave him permission while he was still in that state,

1:08 And they conversed.

1:10 Then 'Uthman asked permission to enter,

1:12 So the Prophet (peace be upon him) sat up and adjusted his clothing.

1:18 'A'ishah said,

1:20 "O Messenger of Allah,

1:22 Abu Bakr entered,

1:23 And you did not stir for him nor pay special heed,

1:26 Then 'Umar entered,

1:28 And you did not stir for him nor pay special heed,

1:31 Then 'Uthman entered,

1:33 And you sat up and adjusted your clothes."

1:36 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied,

1:40 "Should I not feel modest before a man whom the angels feel modest before?"

1:44 And he (peace be upon him) said,

1:47 "'Uthman is truly modest and deeply reserved,

1:50 Before whom the angels feel modest."

1:53 And 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)

1:55 Possessed an intense fear and awe of Allah Almighty.

1:59 Whenever he stood beside a grave,

2:01 He would weep until his beard became soaked.

2:04 It was said to him,

2:05 "You remember Paradise and the Fire without weeping,

2:08 Yet you weep because of this?"

2:10 He replied,

2:12 "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,

2:16 'The grave is the very first stage of the Hereafter;

2:20 If one is saved from it,

2:22 What comes after it is easier.

2:24 But if one is not saved from it,

2:25 What comes after it is even more severe.'"

2:28 How magnificent was 'Uthman!

2:30 Fear filled his heart,

2:32 Even though he had been given the glad tidings of martyrdom in the cause of Allah

2:36 And a Paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth,

2:39 From the lips of him who does not speak from desire.

2:43 For the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) once ascended

2:46 Mount Uhud

2:48 Accompanied by Abu Bakr, 'Umar, and 'Uthman,

2:52 And the mountain trembled beneath them.

2:54 So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

2:57 "Be still, O Uhud!

2:59 For upon you are only a Prophet, a Siddiq, and two martyrs."

3:05 Among the exalted qualities of 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)

3:08 Was his profound humility,

3:11 Far removed from pride and arrogance.

3:14 He was frequently seen sleeping in the mosque wrapped in a simple cloak,

3:18 With no one around him,

3:20 Even while he was the Commander of the Faithful.

3:23 Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said,

3:26 "I saw 'Uthman ibn 'Affan taking a midday nap in the mosque

3:29 While he was Caliph at the time,

3:32 And when he stood up, the marks of the pebbles were imprinted on his side."

3:35 Al-Hasan was asked about those who take midday naps in the mosque,

3:38 And he said,

3:40 "I saw 'Uthman ibn 'Affan sleeping in the mosque

3:43 With his cloak tucked under his head,

3:46 And a man would come and sit beside him,

3:49 Then another man would come and sit beside him,

3:52 As though he were just one of them."

3:55 It is also narrated of 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)

3:58 That he used to attend to preparing his own wudu water at night himself.

4:02 It was said to him,

4:04 "If only you would instruct some of your servants, they would suffice you."

4:07 He replied, "No, the night is for them to rest."

4:11 One day, he grew angry with a servant of his

4:14 And pinched his ear until it pained him.

4:17 But he quickly remembered the retribution of the Hereafter,

4:21 So he summoned his servant and said to him,

4:24 "I pinched your ear, so take retribution from me."

4:27 The servant felt shy

4:30 And refused to place 'Uthman in that position.

4:33 But 'Uthman insisted upon him,

4:36 So the servant took hold of 'Uthman's ear.

4:39 Whereupon 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said,

4:42 "Pinch harder! How wonderful is retribution in this world,

4:45 Rather than retribution in the Hereafter!"

4:48 And 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was among those who strived devotedly

4:51 In acts of worship.

4:53 It has been narrated through multiple chains

4:55 That he recited the entire Glorious Qur'an

4:58 In a single rak'ah

5:00 Beside the Black Stone during the days of Hajj.

5:03 It was his habit

5:05 To begin reciting the Qur'an on Thursday evening

5:08 And complete its recitation on Wednesday evening.

5:12 He used to fast continuously

5:14 And stand in prayer through the night,

5:16 Except for a brief rest at its beginning.

5:18 And he (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say,

5:21 "Three things from this world have been made beloved to me:

5:24 Feeding the hungry,

5:26 Clothing the naked,

5:28 And reciting the Qur'an."

5:30 He would also say,

5:32 "I truly hate for a day to pass over me

5:35 In which I do not look into the Covenant of Allah,"

5:38 Meaning the Mus-haf.

5:40 And he used to say,

5:43 "I can never get my fill of the Speech of your Lord."

5:46 And it was he who narrated to the Ummah

5:48 The saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him):

5:51 "The best among you are those who learn the Qur'an

5:53 And teach it."

5:55 And he (may Allah be pleased with him)

5:57 Used to manumit every Friday

5:59 A slave for the sake of Allah,

6:01 Ever since he embraced Islam,

6:03 So that the total number of slaves he freed

6:05 Was two thousand four hundred

6:07 Slaves approximately.

6:09 We have mentioned previously

6:11 That 'Uthman ibn 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him)

6:14 Was among the wealthiest of the Companions,

6:17 Knowing how to earn wealth,

6:19 As well as knowing how and where to spend it,

6:22 And how to attain Allah's pleasure and His Paradise through his wealth.

6:27 Among such instances

6:29 Was that when the Muslim Emigrants arrived in Medina,

6:33 They found its water unpalatable.

6:35 There was a well belonging to a Jewish man,

6:38 Known as the Well of Ruma,

6:40 Who used to sell its fresh water;

6:42 He sold its water,

6:44 And among the Muslims were those who could not afford the price.

6:48 So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,

6:51 "Who will buy the Well of Ruma,

6:53 Placing his bucket alongside the buckets of the Muslims,

6:56 In exchange for something better for him in Paradise?"

6:59 Thereupon 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) hastened

7:02 To fulfill the wish of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

7:06 He went to the Jewish man

7:08 And negotiated with him to purchase it,

7:10 But the man refused.

7:12 So 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) negotiated

7:15 To buy half of it,

7:17 Purchasing it from him for twelve thousand dirhams,

7:21 And he dedicated it to the Muslims,

7:23 On the condition that the well would be his for one day

7:26 And the Jewish man's for the next.

7:28 So the Muslims would draw water on the day of 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)

7:32 Enough to suffice them for two days.

7:34 When the Jewish man saw this,

7:37 He said to 'Uthman,

7:39 "You have ruined my trade,

7:41 So buy the other half."

7:43 'Uthman agreed to that

7:45 And bought it for eight thousand dirhams,

7:48 Making the entire well a endowment for the Muslims.

7:52 Later, the Prophet's Mosque became overcrowded with worshippers after the Conquest of Khaybar,

7:56 And there was a house adjacent to the mosque.

7:59 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,

8:03 "Who will expand our mosque by purchasing this house,

8:06 In exchange for a house in Paradise?"

8:08 So 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) bought the house for twenty-five thousand

8:13 And expanded the mosque with it.

8:15 Among what has been narrated of his generosity (may Allah be pleased with him)

8:20 Is that the people were stricken by severe hardship and famine during the caliphate of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).

8:27 They gathered before Abu Bakr and said,

8:30 "The sky has withheld its rain,

8:32 The earth has produced no vegetation,

8:34 And the people are in dire distress."

8:37 Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said,

8:40 "Disperse and be patient,

8:42 For evening will not fall before relief comes to you from Allah, Allah willing."

8:48 Before the remainder of that day had passed,

8:51 A caravan belonging to 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived from the Levant,

8:56 Consisting of one hundred mounts laden with everything the people needed.

9:01 The merchants gathered at 'Uthman's door

9:04 And knocked on it.

9:06 'Uthman came out to them and said,

9:09 "What do you desire?"

9:11 They said,

9:12 "We have learned that you have food supplies;

9:15 Sell to us so that we may bring relief to the poor among the Muslims."

9:19 'Uthman replied,

9:21 "With all honor and gladness!

9:23 "Enter and buy."

9:25 Then he said:

9:26 "O merchants!

9:28 How much profit will you offer me?"

9:30 They replied:

9:31 "Twelve dirhams for every ten."

9:33 'Uthman said:

9:35 "I have been offered more."

9:37 They said:

9:38 "Fifteen for every ten."

9:40 'Uthman said:

9:42 "I have been offered more."

9:44 The merchants said:

9:45 "O Abu 'Amr!

9:47 There are no merchants left in Medina besides us,

9:50 so who could have offered you more?"

9:52 He said:

9:53 "Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, has offered me more:

9:56 ten dirhams for every single dirham.

9:58 Can you offer me any more than that?"

10:00 They said:

10:01 "By Allah, no!"

10:03 He said:

10:04 "Then I call Allah to witness

10:06 that I have pledged this entire caravan, with everything in it,

10:11 as charity for the poor among the Muslims."

10:14 Despite 'Uthman's (may Allah be pleased with him) well-known fame for wealth, riches, and abundant capital,

10:21 he was also renowned for his ascetic detachment from the fleeting pleasures and adornments of this worldly life.

10:27 Among the accounts transmitted about him

10:29 is that he would serve the people the lavish meals fit for a ruler,

10:33 yet return to his own home and eat simple vinegar and oil.

10:37 Abu al-'Abbas al-Sarraj (may Allah have mercy on him) relates:

10:41 "Abu Ishaq al-Qurashi said to me one day:

10:45 'Who was the most generous of people after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?'

10:50 I replied: ''Uthman Ibn 'Affan.'

10:53 He asked: 'How did you arrive at 'Uthman from among all people?'

10:58 I said: 'Because I saw that true nobility manifests in two things: wealth and soul.

11:04 And I found that 'Uthman freely gave his wealth for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him),

11:11 and then freely surrendered his life to protect his kin.'

11:14 He said: 'How excellent you are, O Abu al-'Abbas!'"

11:19 He (may Allah be pleased with him) was also among the foremost fighters striving in the cause of Allah.

11:24 He never lagged behind in any military expedition led by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),

11:29 except on the day of Badr,

11:32 when he was occupied with nursing the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).

11:37 He remained behind in Medina on her account,

11:40 yet the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) assigned to him

11:44 a full share of the spoils and rewarded him with its spiritual recompense,

11:48 so he is counted among those who attended Badr.

11:51 He subsequently witnessed Uhud, al-Khandaq, al-Hudaybiyyah,

11:54 Khaybar, and the Fulfilled 'Umrah,

11:57 and he was present at the Conquest of Mecca, Hawazin, al-Ta'if,

12:00 and the Expedition of Tabuk.

12:02 Among his memorable actions that history has recorded in letters of gold

12:09 was his stance on the day of al-Hudaybiyyah.

12:11 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) desired

12:15 to convey to Quraysh his true intent and purpose in coming to Mecca.

12:20 So he called 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)

12:23 and dispatched him to Quraysh, saying:

12:26 "Inform them that we have not come to fight or wage war,

12:29 but rather we have come only as pilgrims performing 'Umrah"—

12:32 meaning they sought solely to perform the lesser pilgrimage.

12:34 So 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) set out

12:37 as directed by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).

12:41 He came to Quraysh

12:43 and delivered the message he carried to their leaders.

12:47 When he finished delivering his message,

12:50 they said to him:

12:51 "If you wish to circumambulate the House, go ahead and do so."

12:55 But he (may Allah be pleased with him) replied:

12:57 "I would never do so

12:59 until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) circumambulates it first."

13:04 When Quraysh saw this resolute stance from 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)—

13:09 a stance that displeased them greatly—

13:12 they detained 'Uthman in their midst.

13:15 They likely intended by this delay

13:17 to consult among themselves regarding the current situation,

13:21 finalize their decision,

13:23 and then send 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) back with their formal reply.

13:27 However, his detention dragged on,

13:29 to the point that a rumor spread among the Muslims that 'Uthman had been killed.

13:34 When this rumor reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),

13:39 he was outraged for the sake of 'Uthman and declared:

13:41 "We shall not leave until we engage the people in battle!"

13:44 He then called his Companions to take an oath of allegiance,

13:47 so they rushed toward him to pledge that they would not flee;

13:51 indeed, a group pledged allegiance to him unto death.

13:54 The first to pledge allegiance to him was Abu Sinan al-Asadi,

13:58 and Salamah Ibn al-Akwa' pledged allegiance to him unto death three separate times:

14:03 among the first people, in the middle, and at the end.

14:06 Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took

14:10 his own right hand and said:

14:12 "This hand is 'Uthman's."

14:14 He then struck it against his left hand and said:

14:18 "This pledge is on behalf of 'Uthman."

14:20 Thus, the hand of the Prophet (peace be upon him) acting on 'Uthman's behalf

14:24 was better than 'Uthman's own hand for himself,

14:27 and better than the hands of all the Companions for themselves.

14:31 When the pledge of allegiance was completed and word of it reached the people of Mecca,

14:35 they grew fearful, released 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him),

14:38 and sought a peaceful reconciliation.

14:40 The Glorious Qur'an commemorated the news of this allegiance,

14:45 praised those who participated in it,

14:47 and declared Allah's pleasure with them.

14:49 Allah Almighty says:

14:51 And during the Expedition of Tabuk,

14:53 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) equipped the Army of Hardship

14:56 with nine hundred and fifty camels,

14:59 completed the full thousand with fifty horses,

15:02 and poured a thousand dinars into the lap of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

15:07 He also brought seven hundred ounces of gold and poured it before the Messenger of Allah,

15:13 until the Prophet (peace be upon him) began turning it over in his lap and repeating:

15:19 "Nothing 'Uthman does after today can ever harm him!

15:23 Nothing 'Uthman does after today can ever harm him!"

15:27 Imam al-Dhahabi said:

15:29 "No one ever spent a greater contribution than the spending of 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)."
