0:13 Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him.

0:17 Loving the Companions and the Prophet’s family is an established Sunnah,

0:22 With which I shall meet my Lord when He resurrects me.

0:28 Loving the Companions and the family of the Prophet.

0:32 Here lies the Garden of Death,

0:34 Where the myth of Musaylimah the Liar was shattered,

0:38 And this raging fitnah was extinguished at the hands of the faithful believers.

0:43 “Of the believers are men who are true to that which they covenanted with Allah. Some of them have paid their vow by death (in battle), and some of them still are waiting; and they have not altered in the least;” (33:23)

0:46 Among them were those waiting for their turn to join the ranks of the martyrs,

0:50 And among them were those who truly fulfilled their pledge and joined their caravan.

0:55 Among them was a group of the people of the Qur'an,

0:59 Whose chests held the Book of Allah,

1:02 Translating it into living reality on the battlefield of al-Yamamah.

1:06 When the call echoed across the field:

1:09 "O people of Surah al-Baqarah!

1:12 O people of the Qur'an!

1:13 Adorn the Qur'an with heroic deeds!"

1:16 They surged forward to lead the frontline ranks,

1:19 Facing the enemy amidst diverse forms of death,

1:22 Until the tide turned decisively against the apostates,

1:26 And Allah blessed the Muslims with a manifest victory.

1:30 The Muslims inspected their fallen among the dead;

1:34 And behold, here was Abu Dujanah,

1:36 The bearer of the red headband of death,

1:38 Who had taken the sword of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with its full right.

1:43 And over there was Thabit ibn Qays,

1:46 The orator of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.

1:49 Near them lay

1:51 At-Tufayl ibn 'Amr,

1:53 'Abbad ibn Bishr,

1:55 And 'Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr,

1:57 The son of the Caliph of the Muslims.

1:59 Among the martyrs was Salim,

2:02 Regarding whom the Prophet, peace be upon him, instructed

2:05 That the Qur'an should be learned from him,

2:07 And beside him was his patron, Abu Hudhayfah.

2:10 The news reached Medina,

2:13 Carrying reports of the martyrdom of many memorizers of the Qur'an,

2:18 Who had fought valiantly

2:21 And played a pivotal role in turning the tide of the battle.

2:25 Fears spread among the Companions over the potential loss of the Qur'an

2:30 Due to the deaths of its memorizers on the battlefield.

2:32 Thereupon, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, hurried

2:36 To Abu Bakr, the Caliph of the Muslims,

2:40 And said:

2:41 "Heavy casualties were inflicted upon the reciters of the Qur'an on the day of al-Yamamah,

2:46 And I fear that a large portion of the Qur'an may be lost.

2:50 I believe you should order the collection of the Qur'an."

2:53 As-Siddiq said to 'Umar:

2:56 "How can we do something that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did not do?"

3:01 'Umar replied:

3:03 "By Allah, it is good."

3:05 'Umar continued to urge him

3:07 Until Allah opened the chest of the Caliph of the Muslims to the idea,

3:11 And he adopted 'Umar's view.

3:13 He sent for Zayd ibn Thabit, may Allah be pleased with him,

3:17 And said to him:

3:19 "O Zayd, you are a wise young man,

3:22 And we have no doubts about your integrity.

3:24 You used to write the revelation for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him,

3:28 So trace the Qur'an and collect it."

3:31 Thus, Zayd ibn Thabit collected it

3:35 From palm stalks, shoulder blades, and the hearts of men,

3:39 And transcribed it onto sheets.

3:41 These sheets remained with Abu Bakr until Allah took his soul,

3:46 Then with 'Umar throughout his life,

3:48 And then with Hafsah bint 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with them.

3:52 This deed was among the greatest achievements of as-Siddiq.

3:58 When the Wars of Apostasy came to an end,

4:01 Abu Bakr began

4:04 Directing the Muslim armies to conquer Persia and Rome—

4:07 The two greatest empires of that era—

4:11 Paving the way for the conquest of Iraq and the Levant.

4:15 During his caliphate, monumental, heroic battles took place

4:20 Whose echoes continue to resound to this day:

4:24 Dhat as-Salasil, Ajnadayn, and Yarmuk—

4:28 Unforgettable days in the life of as-Siddiq.

4:33 Abu Bakr as-Siddiq fell ill

4:37 With his terminal illness.

4:39 When he felt his end approaching,

4:42 He consulted the Companions about 'Umar ibn al-Khattab,

4:47 And the people unanimously agreed that he was the most worthy of the caliphate.

4:51 He then summoned 'Uthman ibn 'Affan, may Allah be pleased with him, and said:

4:55 "Write: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

4:59 This is the testament of Abu Bakr ibn Abi Quhafah

5:03 At the end of his time in this world, departing from it,

5:07 And at the beginning of his journey into the Hereafter, entering it—

5:11 A time when the disbeliever believes, the wicked becomes certain,

5:15 And the liar speaks the truth:

5:17 I have appointed over you—" Then he lost consciousness.

5:22 'Uthman wrote: "I have appointed over you 'Umar ibn al-Khattab."

5:28 When Abu Bakr regained consciousness, he said:

5:31 "Read it to me."

5:33 So he read it to him.

5:35 Abu Bakr proclaimed Allah's greatness and said:

5:36 "You feared that the people would dispute if my soul departed while I was unconscious?"

5:41 He replied: "Yes."

5:43 Abu Bakr said: "May Allah reward you with good on behalf of Islam and its people."

5:47 Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

5:50 "The most discerning of people in intuition were three:

5:52 Abu Bakr,

5:54 When he recognized the merit of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab and appointed him successor;

5:58 The companion of Moses,

6:00 Who said: 'O my father, hire him';

6:03 “One of the two women said: O my father! Hire him! For the best (man) that thou canst hire in the strong, the trustworthy.” (28:26)

6:06 And al-'Aziz,

6:08 When he discerned the nobility of Joseph, peace be upon him."

6:11 His illness lasted for fifteen days,

6:15 During which he said:

6:17 "Look at whatever has increased in my wealth since I assumed the leadership,

6:21 And send it to the Caliph after me."

6:25 They looked,

6:27 And found only a Nubian servant who used to carry his children,

6:30 And a camel

6:33 Used to water his garden.

6:34 They sent both to 'Umar.

6:37 'Umar wept and said:

6:41 "May Allah have mercy upon Abu Bakr;

6:44 He has placed an immense burden upon whoever succeeds him."

6:48 As-Siddiq instructed that he be shrouded in an old garment,

6:52 Saying: "The living are more entitled to the new."

6:56 He passed away

6:58 At the age of sixty-three,

7:00 Completing the exact lifespan of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.

7:05 His wife, Asma' bint 'Umays, washed him,

7:09 And he was buried beside the Messenger of Allah,

7:13 In accordance with his will.

7:15 His successor, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, led his funeral prayer,

7:19 And 'Umar, 'Uthman, Talhah,

7:23 And his son 'Abd ar-Rahman lowered him into his grave.

7:26 His head was placed aligned with the shoulders of the Messenger of Allah,

7:32 And the niche of his grave was placed directly adjacent to the Prophet's grave.

7:37 As-Siddiq passed away

7:40 After a life replete with service to Islam.

7:43 Throughout his biography, we observe

7:46 How he convened war councils,

7:48 Dispatched armies,

7:50 Opened lands,

7:52 And collected the land tax.

7:53 We find him devising remarkable strategies

7:56 And meticulous measures in his wars against the apostates,

8:00 And later against Persia and Rome.

8:03 We see him tending to the public treasury,

8:06 As abundant provisions overflowed for the people in his era.

8:09 We find that he never neglected a single one of his subjects;

8:13 He would go out in person

8:15 To care for an elderly blind woman in her home,

8:18 Sweeping her room and preparing her food.

8:21 We see him milking sheep for the weak;

8:24 We find him visiting the sick,

8:27 Attending funerals, upholding ties of kinship,

8:30 Caring for his children and wives,

8:33 And showing deep gentleness and compassion to his servants.

8:36 All of this took place within a span of no more than two years and three months—

8:42 The total duration of his caliphate, may Allah be pleased with him and grant him satisfaction.

8:46 Usayd ibn Safwan, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:

8:50 When Abu Bakr as-Siddiq passed away and was shrouded,

8:56 Medina shook with weeping,

8:59 Just as it did on the day the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed away.

9:03 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, came

9:07 Hurrying, rushing, and reciting the words of bereavement,

9:10 Until he stood at the house where Abu Bakr lay.

9:14 He said: "May Allah have mercy upon you, O Abu Bakr!

9:17 You were the closest companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

9:22 His solace, his source of comfort, and his trusted confidant;

9:25 The keeper of his secrets and his advisor.

9:28 You were the first of the people to embrace Islam,

9:31 The purest of them in faith,

9:33 The strongest of them in certainty in Allah,

9:36 And the most resembling the Messenger of Allah in guidance and character.

9:41 May Allah grant you the best reward on behalf of His Messenger and Islam.

9:46 You believed the Messenger of Allah when people rejected him,

9:50 And you were to him like his hearing and his sight.

9:53 By Allah, the Muslims will never suffer a loss after the Messenger of Allah like the loss of you!"

9:59 The people remained silent until he finished speaking,

10:02 Then they wept aloud and said: "You have spoken the truth."

10:08 'Umar said:

10:10 "If the faith of Abu Bakr were weighed against the faith of all the people of the earth, his faith would outweigh theirs.

10:16 How I wish I were a single hair on the chest of Abu Bakr!"

10:20 Al-Hasan was asked:

10:23 "Is loving Abu Bakr and 'Umar part of the Sunnah?"

10:26 He replied: "No, rather it is an obligatory duty."

10:29 Ibn al-Jawzi mentioned

10:31 That the salaf (early generations) used to teach their children the love of Abu Bakr and 'Umar

10:35 Just as they taught them a surah of the Qur'an.

10:38 For the Chosen Prophet,

10:43 The best of Companions, explicitly declared by textual proof:

10:49 They are in the Garden of Eternity, an explicit promise that elevated their honor:

10:56 They are Talhah,

10:59 Ibn 'Awf,

11:02 Az-Zubayr, as well as

11:05 Abu 'Ubaydah,

11:07 The two Sa'ds, and the Rightly Guided Caliphs.
