0:10 Talhah Ibn 'Ubaydillah,

0:15 may Allah be pleased with him.

0:22 with which I hope to meet my Lord as long as He grants me life.

0:26 Loving the Companions and the Prophet’s kin...

0:31 People gathered as usual in the marketplace of Busra,

0:35 buying and selling,

0:37 while caravans arrived to them from every direction.

0:41 While they were thus engaged,

0:43 a monk suddenly emerged from his hermitage

0:47 and called out:

0:48 "Ask the people of this market season:

0:50 is there anyone among them from the people of the Sacred Precinct (the Haram)?"

0:53 Talhah Ibn 'Ubaydillah said:

0:55 "I was near him,

0:57 so I said: 'Yes,

0:59 I am from the people of the Haram.'"

1:01 The monk said to him:

1:03 "Has Ahmad appeared among you?"

1:06 Talhah asked: "And who is Ahmad?"

1:09 He replied:

1:10 "The son of 'Abdullah, son of 'Abd al-Muttalib.

1:13 This is the month in which he is to appear,

1:16 and he is the final Prophet.

1:18 His emergence shall be from the Haram,

1:20 and his migration will be to a land of date palms, volcanic tracts, and salt flats.

1:24 So beware of letting anyone precede you to him."

1:27 Talhah Ibn 'Ubaydillah said:

1:30 "What he said struck deep into my heart,

1:32 so I departed swiftly until I reached Mecca.

1:36 I asked:

1:37 'Has anything new occurred?'

1:39 They said: 'Yes,

1:41 Muhammad Ibn 'Abdillah, the Trustworthy,

1:43 has claimed prophethood,

1:45 and Ibn Abi Quhafah has followed him.'"

1:48 He said:

1:49 "So I set out until I entered upon Abu Bakr,

1:52 and I asked:

1:54 'Have you truly followed this man?'

1:56 He said: 'Yes.'"

1:57 Talhah then informed him of what the monk had said.

2:01 Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) took Talhah

2:05 and brought him to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

2:09 Talhah embraced Islam,

2:12 and he informed the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

2:16 of what the monk had said,

2:18 and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was deeply delighted

2:22 with that.

2:24 When Quraysh learned of the Islam of Abu Bakr and Talhah,

2:28 they set upon them Nawfal Ibn Khuwaylid Ibn al-'Adawiyyah,

2:32 who was called the "Lion of Quraysh."

2:35 He seized them both, bound them together with a single rope,

2:39 and handed them over to the foolish ruffians of Quraysh.

2:42 For this reason, Abu Bakr and Talhah were called "the Two Bound Comrades" (al-Qarinayn).

2:47 Talhah suffered immense harm from the polytheists because of his Islam,

2:54 and his own mother took part with them in torturing him

2:57 so that he might renounce his religion,

3:00 yet he stood like a mountain in his firmness and steadfastness.

3:04 Reports have indeed come down

3:06 that while people were circumambulating between al-Safa and al-Marwah,

3:11 they saw a large crowd following a young man

3:15 whose hands were bound to his neck,

3:18 while the people were insulting and beating him.

3:21 They asked, "What is his story?"

3:23 They replied, "This is Talhah Ibn 'Ubaydillah; he has renounced his ancestral religion."

3:28 Then they saw a woman behind him shouting angrily and cursing him,

3:32 so they asked, "And who is this?"

3:35 They said, "This is his mother,

3:37 al-Sa'bah bint al-Hadrami."

3:41 Such was the conversion of the hero of our story:

3:44 Talhah Ibn 'Ubaydillah Ibn 'Uthman al-Qurashi al-Taymi,

3:48 Abu Muhammad.

3:50 And such was his steadfastness,

3:53 until he became one of the foremost pioneers in Islam,

3:57 one of the Ten Promised Paradise

4:01 upon the tongue of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

4:05 and one of those with whom the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed away

4:10 while being completely pleased with them,

4:12 and one of the six members of the consultative council (Shura)

4:14 whom 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) chose to select the Caliph after him.

4:21 Talhah was born

4:24 twenty-eight years before the Hijrah.

4:27 His mother was al-Sa'bah bint al-Hadrami,

4:30 the sister of the noble Companion

4:32 al-'Ala' Ibn al-Hadrami, may Allah be pleased with him.

4:36 She later accepted Islam and migrated, may Allah be pleased with her.

4:41 Talhah married four women,

4:45 each of whom had a sister who was a wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him:

4:51 He married Umm Kulthum bint Abi Bakr al-Siddiq,

4:55 the sister of the truthful lady 'A'ishah bint Abi Bakr;

4:59 he married Hamnah bint Jahsh,

5:02 the sister of Zaynab bint Jahsh;

5:05 he married Fari'ah bint Abi Sufyan,

5:08 the sister of Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan;

5:12 and he married Ruqayyah bint Abi Umayyah,

5:15 the sister of Umm Salamah,

5:17 Hind bint Abi Umayyah —

5:19 may Allah be pleased with them all.

5:23 He had eleven sons and four daughters,

5:27 and he used to name his sons after the Prophets.

5:31 His sons were: Muhammad,

5:35 who was his eldest son

5:37 and was nicknamed "al-Sajjad" (the Constant Prostrator) due to his abundant worship,

5:41 and he was a Companion

5:43 who lived during the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him;

5:47 and among his sons were also:

5:49 'Imran, Musa, Ya'qub,

5:52 Isma'il, Ishaq,

5:54 Zakariyya, Yusuf,

5:57 Yahya, 'Isa, and Salih.

5:59 His daughters were:

6:01 'A'ishah, Umm Ishaq,

6:03 Fatimah, and Maryam.

6:06 Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) was

6:08 a man of brown complexion,

6:10 with thick hair,

6:12 of medium build leaning towards shorter stature,

6:15 handsome of face,

6:16 broad-chested,

6:18 wide between the shoulders,

6:20 with large feet;

6:22 when he walked, he walked briskly,

6:24 and when he turned, he turned with his whole body.

6:28 The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said of him:

6:32 "Whoever wishes to look upon a living martyr walking upon the earth,

6:36 let him look at Talhah Ibn 'Ubaydillah."

6:40 When the word of Allah was revealed: ﴾Among the believers are men true to what they pledged to Allah...﴿,

6:42 the Companions wanted to know who had fulfilled his vow.

6:47 They did not dare to ask the Prophet (peace be upon him) directly,

6:52 out of deep reverence and awe of him.

6:55 So they said to a bedouin:

6:57 "Ask him about the one who has fulfilled his vow."

7:00 The bedouin asked him,

7:02 but the Prophet (peace be upon him) turned away from him.

7:06 He asked him a second time,

7:08 and he turned away from him again.

7:10 Then he asked him a third time,

7:12 and he turned away from him once more.

7:14 When the Prophet (peace be upon him) stepped out of the mosque,

7:19 he saw Talhah Ibn 'Ubaydillah, may Allah be pleased with him,

7:23 and said:

7:24 "Where is the one who asked about the one who fulfilled his vow?"

7:28 The bedouin said:

7:29 "Here I am, O Messenger of Allah."

7:31 He said:

7:33 "This is one of those who fulfilled his vow,"

7:35 pointing to Talhah, may Allah be pleased with him.

7:40 Allah bestowed abundant wealth upon Talhah,

7:43 so that he became one of the wealthiest and most affluent men.

7:47 He was called "Talhah of Goodness" (Talhat al-Khayr),

7:50 "Talhah of Generosity" (Talhat al-Jud),

7:52 and "Talhah of the Overflowing Bounty" (Talhat al-Fayyad),

7:54 because of his immense spending and extraordinary magnanimity.

7:58 He had an outstretched hand in doing good and giving freely to the needy,

8:03 and extraordinary accounts were related concerning his benevolence.

8:08 Among them:

8:09 On one occasion, wealth arrived to him from Hadramawt

8:13 amounting to seven hundred thousand dirhams,

8:16 and he spent his night tossing and turning restlessly.

8:19 His wife, Umm Kulthum bint Abi Bakr al-Siddiq, said to him:

8:24 "What is the matter with you, may Allah have mercy on you?"

8:27 He said:

8:28 "I have been thinking all night,

8:30 saying to myself:

8:32 'What can a man think of his Lord when he spends the night with such wealth in his house?'"

8:37 She said:

8:38 "Why not share it with your close friends?

8:41 When morning comes,

8:43 call for large bowls and platters,

8:45 and distribute it among them."

8:48 He said to her:

8:49 "May Allah have mercy on you!

8:51 You are truly divinely guided, the daughter of a divinely guided man."

8:54 When morning came,

8:56 he distributed it entirely among the Emigrants (Muhajirun) and the Ansar.

9:00 A man once came to him and appealed to him on account of the kinship between them.

9:04 Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him:

9:08 "This is an orchard of mine in such-and-such a place —

9:11 that is, my garden —

9:13 and I have been offered three hundred thousand dirhams for it.

9:17 If you wish, take the money,

9:20 and if you wish, take the orchard."

9:22 So the man took the money, the full value of the orchard.

9:26 He (may Allah be pleased with him)

9:28 never left any destitute member of Banu Taym without providing for his needs,

9:33 nor any debtor without paying off his debt,

9:36 nor any bachelor without arranging his marriage.

9:39 'Ubaydullah Ibn Ma'mar

9:42 and 'Abdullah Ibn 'Amir Ibn Kurayz owed

9:45 a debt amounting to eighty thousand dirhams,

9:48 so Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) paid it off on their behalf,

9:52 and he also paid off thirty thousand dirhams for another of his cousins.

9:58 He used to send ten thousand dirhams every year to the Mother of the Believers, 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her.

10:07 It used to be said:

10:08 "The most generous of the Arabs in Islam

10:11 is Talhah ibn 'Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him)."

10:15 Yet despite all this giving and spending,

10:18 he would humbly say:

10:21 "We feel the same attachment to our wealth as the miserly do,

10:25 but we force ourselves to be patient and part with it."

10:29 When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)

10:33 and his companion Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) migrated to Medina,

10:37 Talhah ibn 'Ubaydullah was away in the Levant on business.

10:43 On his way back to Mecca,

10:46 he met the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr

10:52 while they were on their journey of migration,

10:55 and he clothed them both in garments from the Levant.

10:58 He then returned to Mecca,

11:00 settled people's financial trusts and dues,

11:02 and then took the family of Abu Bakr

11:06 and set out with them, migrating to Medina.

11:10 One day, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed by a water well called Baysan,

11:17 so he asked about it.

11:19 He was told, "Its name is Baysan,

11:21 and its water is salty and bitter."

11:22 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

11:26 "Rather, it is Nu'man,

11:28 and it is sweet and wholesome."

11:30 So the Messenger of Allah changed its name,

11:34 and Allah changed the nature of the water.

11:37 Thereupon, Talhah ibn 'Ubaydullah bought it and gave it away in charity.

11:41 He then came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and informed him of it,

11:46 so the Messenger of Allah said:

11:50 "You, O Talhah, are truly an overflowing fountain of generosity (Fayyad)!"

11:53 For this reason, he was nicknamed "Talhah the Fayyad" (the Boundlessly Generous),

11:57 may Allah be pleased with him and make him well-pleased.
