How many a child has lost a father, a mother, or both?

There is no permanence for any living being other than our Creator,

And to the Creator, all things return.

And one of his brothers wrote to him to offer condolences.

In that lies compensation and solace,

For how many rewards await them with their Lord,

And how much praise does He bestow upon them?

Whoever contemplates this will find their affliction easier to bear.

﴾And give good tidings to the patient,﴿

﴾Who, when afflicted by a﴿

﴾Calamity,﴿

﴾Say: "Indeed, we belong to Allah,﴿

﴾And indeed, to Him we shall return."﴿

A man wrote to one of his brothers

To console him over the loss of his son:

"To proceed:

A child is, for their parent,

A source of grief and trial while they live.

So if they are taken, it is a prayer and a mercy.

Do not grieve over what you have missed of their grief and trial,

And do not squander what Allah has compensated you with

Of His prayer and mercy."

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:

"Allah the Almighty says:

'I have no reward for My believing servant

If I take away their beloved from the people of this world,

And they seek the reward from Me,

Except Paradise.'"

So, you who are afflicted by the death of a loved one or relative,

Do not despair, do not grieve excessively,

And do not object to Allah regarding His decree.

Rather, be content with His action,

And be patient with what has befallen you of His judgment.

Know that the reward Allah has for a good reception of a calamity,

And for seeking the reward from Him upon its arrival,

Is better than this world and all that is in it.

That your intense grief will not bring back what you have lost,

Nor will it benefit the one you have parted from.

So do not add to the calamity of losing your loved one

The loss of the Creator’s reward.

A brother of one of the kings died,

And one of the Arabs consoled him, saying:

"Know that the creation belongs to the Creator,

Gratitude belongs to the Bestower,

And submission belongs to the All-Powerful.

What is to be must be,

What cannot be averted has come,

And there is no way to bring back what has passed.

What remains with you is what will eventually leave you or what you will leave behind.

Why then despair over what is inevitable?

Why covet what cannot be hoped for?

And what recourse is there for what will be taken from you or what you will be taken from?

Our ancestors have passed on, and we are but their branches;

What permanence is there for the branch after the root?

The best of things during calamities is patience.

The people of this world are but travelers,

They do not unload their baggage until they reach the next.

How excellent is gratitude during blessings,

And submission during trials.

Take heed from those you have seen who were overcome by despair;

If you have seen that despair brought any of them back to a position of security,

Then you are more entitled to it.

Know that the greatest calamity is a bad outcome after it,

And the return and the destination are near."
