The breeze of the dawn.
0:08
A journey of longing.
0:10
When you are consumed by the anxieties of this world,
0:17
And left distressed by its sorrows,
0:21
And grief has piled up upon your heart,
0:24
Until you find yourself suffering from the memory of past pains,
0:29
Or yearning for a present filled with its hardships,
0:34
Or burning with fear of a future that your mind has crowded with terrors,
0:40
Then let your longing take flight from this earth, heavy with wounds,
0:46
Toward the land of dreams, overflowing with joy.
0:50
Mount the steed of longing toward a land that holds nothing but perfect bliss,
0:56
Where everything smiles upon you from every side,
0:59
And rejoices in your presence forevermore.
1:02
Its beautiful breeze blows upon you with everything you love,
1:07
For whoever enters it shall live in bliss and never despair,
1:12
Shall abide eternally and never die,
1:15
Its garments shall never wear out,
1:17
And its youth shall never fade.
1:19
In it is what no eye has seen,
1:22
Nor ear has heard,
1:24
Nor has it ever crossed the heart of any human.
1:27
A land where there is no place for worries or grief,
1:32
Nor for sorrows, illnesses, or pains,
1:35
Nor for any source of distress.
1:38
Rather, one sheds the previous pains of the earth upon entering it,
1:42
Before stepping inside,
1:44
Just as one who wears sandals removes them before entering a clean place.
1:50
And they shall say, "Praise be to Allah, who has removed all sorrow from us."
1:57
“And they say: Praise be to Allah Who hath put grief away from us. Lo! Our Lord is Forgiving, Bountiful,” (35:34)
2:03
So, if the pain of this world afflicts you, O believer,
2:09
Then travel with your longing to Paradise,
2:12
And reflect upon what Allah has prepared for its people therein.
2:16
Contemplate, if you were there,
2:19
How you would delight and enjoy, and your soul would be free of every impurity,
2:25
And you would meet your believing loved ones whom death had reached before you,
2:32
While you are in longing to meet them,
2:35
And exchange the hadith of longing between you and them.
2:39
Perhaps Paradise says to you, while you are in the midst of the worldly struggle:
2:45
"Travel with your longing, for the paths are clear,
2:50
And fly with your love toward me, O you who complain.
2:54
If the tears of your eyes flow from pain,
2:58
You shall become happy with me, O you who weep."
3:03
This journey of longing
3:07
Will lighten some of your hardship,
3:10
And make the weight of your trials easier to bear.
3:13
It will whisper into the ear of your faith
3:16
That every affliction on the path to Paradise is trivial,
3:21
And that every patience in the face of those adversities has Paradise as its price,
3:26
Making it an easy task.
3:30
Just as that noble longing which has drawn near to you
3:34
Will benefit you in another way:
3:37
It will urge you toward righteous deeds and the abandonment of evil.
3:42
Ibrahim al-Taymi said:
3:45
"I imagined myself in Paradise,
3:47
Eating of its fruits,
3:50
And drinking of its rivers.
3:52
Then I imagined myself in the Fire,
3:55
Eating of its Zaqqum,
3:57
And drinking of its pus,
3:59
And struggling with its chains and shackles.
4:03
So I said to my soul:
4:05
'O soul, what do you desire?'
4:09
It replied:
4:11
'I wish to be returned to the world so that I may do righteous deeds.'
4:15
I said:
4:18
'You are in the midst of that wish, so act!'"
4:21
Therefore, let Paradise and the longing for it be your mental occupation,
4:26
Which you hold fast to amidst the waves of your pain,
4:30
To protect you from drowning in the depths of despair and the torment of the soul.
4:36
And say today:
4:39
"Toward the qibla of longing, I drive my mounts,
4:43
To sever the distance between me and my calamities.
4:47
I forget the worries of life when they befall me,
4:51
And I find the bounty of Allah on every side.
4:55
I am absent from the world through the delight of what I behold,
4:59
Even though I am not absent from the abode of hardship.
5:03
I travel from my own self to the garden of its longing,
5:07
Finding delight in the union of love, though I am absent.
5:12
How beautiful is longing when it urges me
5:16
Toward the solace of affliction and the fulfillment of my desires."
